Strange indeed. The once piece of information you do not state is how you have set your backup location. Goto manage backups and advise what is your backup destination please. Then run a quick backup and full backup and advise if they are successful or not.

Sounds weird. You say that you performed your first backup to DVD so I’ll presume it is still set to backup to there, advise if otherwise. But then you say you have set the backup to run manually, however you say “Backup is grayed out and set to Manual.” Strange thing is, Backup should not be grayed out unless it is completely disabled, and should show green if set to run manually. Can you check all of the backup settings and let us know, thanks.

The exact same crap is happening to me, too. Even though I stopped the backup because I didn’t have enough storage space and I didn’t have any DVDs handy. It kept trying to run the backup. Then, I went in and changed the settings to run manually and canceled any scheduled backup. bleep cd player is opening and closing and even if I shut down my entire system and reboot it it keeps on doing it. Somebody had better tell us how to fix the problem before it completely ruins my cd-rom.

Mine is completely gray bar disabled.

Some updates were sent with the latest version of Norton 360 v2.4.0.4. I would recommend updating your system to that version through LiveUpdate and seeing if this issue is still occurring. Thanks!

I have the same problem.  Norton 360, initially ran back up to discs, now the DVD tray opens and closes continuously even though the backup is disabled.  I have run auto update and the program is current.

Please help.

Can you tell me how you disabled backup?

Also did you have it set to manually run backups before you disabled it?

I changed the backup setting to run manually.  The screen now reads 'backup disabled.'  It was previously scheduled to run automatically.

Dell Dimension XPS Gen3; Norton 360 Version 2.4.0.4; Add-on Pack Version 2.1.0.55; Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP2.

I also have a problem with my DVD opening and closing. I originally did a manual backup with Norton 360 Version 1 to my DVD drive. After upgrading to version 2, I no longer have access to my DVD or CD drives. I have access to Secure Online Storage, Local Fixed Disks, even USB External and Flash drives, but no CD or DVD drives. Now the DVD drive opens and closes spontaneously after the computer has been on for a while. I have tried a new backup to a USB external drive; changed the backup settings to manual; even disabled the backup settings, but the DVD drive access continues. There are no error messages or prompts to insert a disk. It makes no difference if I insert a disk into the drive or not. I’ve tried my backup disks, a blank and movie disk with no changes, the drive keeps opening and closing on its own. Also, without access to my DVD drive, all previous backups are useless.

I am so glad this isn't just me or my laptop. Did anyone get a fix for this problem? After renewing my subscription and runnning my back-up manually (to disc) I now have my disc-tray opening continually and a Norton message saying something about I cannot back-up  because a back-up is already running - except I have nothing running and my back-up schedule is set to manual.

Would really like my tray to stop opening, it's really bugging me.

Please help... ... ...

Hello kalabee.

Can you try this to see if it fixes the problem:

1. Set the backup location to be an internal or externall hdd/usb drive.

2. Manually run the backup, or run backup now.

3. Reboot the computer.

4. Set the backup location to the cd/dvd burner again, and run a manual backup or backup now.

Let us know if this resolves your issue.

Dave

hi, the issue was solved by one of your online live chat consultant type people. thanks for the follow-up!

Could you help us all out by saying what that solution was?! <s>

I wish I could, but I don't know what the consultant did. He did it all for me by remote control.

Sorry.

Oh well ......

Perhaps he did what Dave_Hauser suggested?

Possibly. He had a couple of tries before he got it right.

Can't hurt to try.

I also had the problem solved by an online chat technician.  He accessed services.msc from the 'run' window in Start.  Unfortunately, I did not write down what he did afterwards.  Don't know if that helps, but I would also be interested in knowing what to do if it happens again.

Yes, please, would someone at Symantec kindly reply with a genuine fix. I have this problem as well. I have run all the scans, backups, and updates repeatedly to no avail.

HELP!

Nelson

Hi again,

Thought I would give the chat support method a try. Wellll, that is not workin very good. First effort, support person did a quickee single file backup to my C drive and wanted me to check for the issue. In order to do that you have to end the chat session because screen saver will not come on other wise.

So, I ended everything. Checked and it is still an issue. Screen saver comes on and Norton opens up trying to do backup with the Media recommends window opening and backup behind it.

I started another chat session. This time guy started a regular backup and had me load a new DVD. While that was running he tried to convince me that it would not happen again. I asked what he did or changed that had not been done before. He told me to change settings to backup to C drive and that will cure it.

I asked why I had to do that when I have three other computers with same software and I do not have to with them.

Yes, I am irritated, and there is more, but you probably get the drift. I am currently typing this on one of the computers that do not have a problem. And, the chat guy is asking me if there is anything else he can do for me. Nope, he has done way more than enough to tick me off and not solve the problem

SURE HOPE SOMEONE IN MANAGEMENT SEES THIS AND ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING TO CORRECT THE SITUATION.
