Big problems since upgrading from XP to Windows 7

Firstly, I need to say that I'm not a techie so, if anyone can help, pleas bear this in mind.

I recently gave my computer to a company for an upgrade from Windows XP to 7.  When it came back, NIS was no longer there!  So, in particular, I lost all my identity safe data (or did I?).

I reinstalled NIS but couldn't find any logons.  There was an old backup file but that was way out of date.

The guy who did the upgrade for me said he'd made a copy of everything stored on my computer but he clearly knows nothing about NIS.

I am more than confused by the new version of identity safe and had password problems with this vault thing (which finally worked when I put in an old password !!!!).

So, I have 2 questions .......

1. Can I find the old identity safe data (which worked perfectly under XP with IE and Firefox)?

2. If not, which will mean resetting about 50 passwords, how can I get identity safe to save the new passwords (at the moment, on the few I've tried, it's not picking them up nor is it auto-filling from the few I found in a back-up file despite the fact that they're showing in the product). btw, the appropriate box is ticked in identity safe.

To say I'm confused is putting it mildly but it's all such a mess.  Thanks.

Hi hruk,

This post would have more exposure if it was posted at Norton Toolbar / Norton Identity Safe

Let me ask you few questions:

The guy who did the upgrade for me said he'd made a copy of everything stored on my computer but he clearly knows nothing about NIS.

Did you find what and where he has saved that in your computer? If not please ask him to locate.

Was the windows 7 installation a fresh one or upgradation from previous XP? (If it was, you will find all your programs and personel files in Win XP still in your my documents and all program list.

1. Can I find the old identity safe data (which worked perfectly under XP with IE and Firefox)?

If you can find your backup data, may be we can help you in retriving the ID Data.

Have you tried importing the old ID Data backup which you located to your new vault?

If not, do it here:

Open ID Vault (NIS main window -> settings -> web ->identity safe -> configure -> enter your vault password

When Vault opens -> Click on Gear icon at bottom left (Settings) -> Import / Export tab ->Import -> Merge with existing data -> Import -> Locate your old backup file -> Import -> Enter password if prompted so...

Autofill must be enabled to autofill the passwords. It can be enabled for each logins individually.

To save new passwords, login to ID Vault before filling web logins. ID vault will ask whether to save or not.

To manually add login info, do it here:

Login to your vault via NIS / browser:

  • On the new window at the top menu strip you can see 'New Login' . The arrow marks give additional options
  • Click 'new login'
  • Enter the title, Tags if you need like social sites, e mail, commercial accounts etc
  • Enter or copy paste the URL of login from browser
  • Enter Username and Password
  • Check or uncheck the options on right as your wish
    • Require Vault Password: Asks for vault password for autofilling/ filling info to website
    • Autofill : Automatically fill the fields of webpage with Username and password
    • Auto-Submit : As soon as auto fill fills the login data, sent it to server (You dont need to click 'Sign in' or 'Login'

Post back.......

Hi - thanks for getting back to me.

I don't know whether he did an upgrade or not (and I can't get hold of him until next week) but he did say he had to wipe out everything before installing Windows 7 so it doesn't sound like an upgrade to me.

I found where he put the data but thereafter I don't know what I'm looking for.

In his "OLD DATA" folder, I have folders named:

Norton Internet Security

Norton Safe Web Lite

Norton Support

Norton Installer

I have screen copy of the contents of Norton Internet Security folder and another of a subfolder of NortonData - Definitions - but this forum won't let me attach them !

Hi hruk,

How to post screenshots in the forum?  Please see here http://community.norton.com/t5/Forum-Feedback/Forum-Tip-How-to-post-screenshots-in-the-forum/td-p/254415

Thanks for the link - not exactly intuitive is it lol.

So, will attach the 2 screen shots to this post.NIS Stuff.pngNIS Stuff.png

Hi,

I hope that the technician also changed some H/W components like CPU, RAM, possibly GPU etc, because if you want to run W7 with all the "bells" like Aero, I highly doubt that it could be achieved with XP specific hardware components.

Let us know if the technician touched that area too.

Thanks.

Regards,

As far as I'm aware, the hardware etc, stays the same - no charge was made for any hardware upgrades - just for the software install.  At the moment, I'm regretting ever moving to Windows 7 - it is confusing the hell out of me.

Hi,

Can you post some system specs?

CPU, RAM, GPU?

Also, hit the Start W7 button and at the Search box type: dxdiag

Let it finish and see what it is reporting.

Regards,

As I said at the beginning, I'm not a techie.  All I want to know is where, if at all, my old Identity safe stuff would be.  I don't really see what the size of the CPU et al has to do with anything.  However, here's the dxdiag report.

"  All I want to know is where, if at all, my old Identity safe stuff would be"

OK, since the Identity Safe is your only concern, all the rest is irrelevant.

Best of luck...

hruk, we are still waiting for your images to be approved - perhaps once they become available for us to view, we'll be able to assist you better.

Thanks guys (and gals?) - really appreciate your help.  Waiting with fingers crossed.

btw, forgot to say that Identity Safe is now working at picking up most new logins - something to do with the toolbar that I fixed but don't ask me how..  I approached it in the same way as monkeys typing Shakespeare - hit enough buttons and something sensible might happen.

Hoping that the tech did copy absolutely everything as is before upgrading to Windows 7.

The identity Safe data is Not in a Programs folder but should be located in the Old Data folder  but deep inside the C:\Documents and Settings folder.

then in as user folder or All Users folder then \Application Data\Norton{NUMBERS}  and it keeps going further in until there is a folder called  IdentitySafeDataStore

The path may be a hidden folder, if so you need to have Windows show Hidden files and folders.

Quads

hruk,

Just an irrelevant info, you should consider, in the future, adding more RAM to your system, at least 2GB, because the minimum requirements for W7 x64 is at least 3GB of RAM & you have only 2GB (and already 1.5GB used).

Otherwise your pc will run between a bit slow and veeery slow.

Best regards,

Quads can you please elaborate the steps for hruk?
May be if he is lucky enough to get Users folders too in backup, then it would be helpful.

(I saw what you posted, in a thread on this community one day, but couldn't relocate it again. [may be vanished into thin air:smileysurprised:])

Happy Easter...........:smileyhappy:

Hi cv,

FWIW, my notes show the following for N 360 - but should be similar for NIS and I do believe it is what Quads was referring to:

Please be advised the numbers behind the N 360_ may be slightly different. Also the S-1-5-21 is a random generated number and the ending of it may be different from what I have shown below.

XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\N360_20.1.0.24\IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21-1845553030-3031872880-4008053321-1001\

<edit>  for some reason that was cut off??

Some info state  C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton ................................................................................long path

The user can copy all the data inside IdentitySafeDataStore folder so that there is a backup of the data or 2 copies of the IdentitySafeDataStore folder  before trying to import the data into the install Norton Windows 7 location.

That why if a something goes wrong the folder and data deep inside the OLD DATA folder still exists.

Quads

Sorry wrong post.

Yes, the same one. Since OP’s previous OS was XP, i thought of adding a reference to that, but couldn’t find it.

Thanks Yank and Quads…
Happy Easter…
