Cannot change smart firewall traffic rules

New Norton screwed up Synergy, so I need to open Traffic Rules “Windows Networking in Public” BUT the rule is “greyed” out and cannot be edited! I cannot upload the JPG or PNG of the screen shot. How can I edit this rule? The pathetic support does not address this.

Hello @David_Lovelace
Norton 360 v24?
Um, is this Synergy?
https://symless.com/synergy

regarding Norton 360 v24
Are you using Automatic Network Control with Notifications?
Are you using Low Risk Applications > Alert aways?

Did you try Public network exceptions > Configure?
Smart Firewall > General > Additional settings

Caveat: I’m not familiar with Synergy

===============================

Yes, this is Symless Synergy

Where is “Automatic Network Control with Notifications” settings?
The blocking log says it is blocking the “Rule Windows Networking in Public Blocked UDP(17) traffic with …” I tried creating a manual rule, but it does now work, only if I disable the firewall does this work. Synergy worked until the recent update with Norton.

No matter what, why can’t I turn off the setting in Norton? I cannot find anything telling me how to enable control of this setting. Support is non-existent on the subject.

Here it looks like I was able to finally upload the screen capture of what I want to edit and unblock, SCRATH THIS, upload completed but then when I hit Reply is says I cannot upload media to posts? I just want to post an image of the screen capture. What kind of support is this?

David. Image upload does work again. It may be that because the forums are new, users with basic trust levels MAY be having images in moderation before becoming visible. Lets see if that is the case. If your image doesn’t appear soon we can escalate the question about why for an appropriate answer and post that here.

Hello @David_Lovelace
are you Norton 360 v22 or v24?

Configure Smart Firewall v24 settings [here]

How do I find out the version? I suspect V24 since I have a new interface.

Yes, please help me to be able to post images. I don’t understand the need to wait for trust, when this is the only real route to support. I just wanted to post a picture of the traffic rules window and why I cannot edit several of the set rules, seems that I should be able to.

Now I figure I can create a new rule, but I don’t know the format/syntax for the rules settings, from what I can see from the canned yet un-editable settings, the port range is something like 135-139 but I cannot seem to set an IP range. looking one of the settings it looks like I should be able to do something like 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.150 but the software says not valid. I looked at the web page for network settings (posted in another reply, seems I cannot post links as well, so much for stellar support, not) but again the information was worthless.

I’m getting frustrated with the lack of support from norton. I can go to the account page and they want to upsell lots of products and services but yet they don’t want to provide adequate support.

Found the version: 24.9.9452 (build 24.9.9452.875)

Hello @David_Lovelace
I’m not familiar with your scenario.
I’m not familiar with tweaking Smart Firewall.
I’ve never needed to tweak Smart Firewall.
Sorry, you’re not able to post pics.
Sorry, no notion whether tweaking Smart Firewall will help your scenario.

regarding Norton 360 v24 Smart Firewall
Automatic Network Control with Notifications?
Low Risk Applications > Alert always?

Smart Firewall > General > Additional settings
Public network exceptions > Configure?
Blocked devices > Manage Devices?

will post more screenshots…if you need

Please post progress

I have no such settings. There is no advanced settings on that page. After wifi settings there is network settings and my screen does not look like this at all.

then your Norton 360 is v22

Why hasn’t it upgraded to the newest version? I have just got done renewing subscription.

Hello @LarryC_Super

I’m v24 by pulling installer from my Norton account.
Maybe, you can pull v24 from your Norton account.

Bottom line: I cannot get any support on the issue which is the earlier version of Norton allowed me to use Synergy but the latest version does not and I cannot find out how to change the firewall settings in Norton.

Norton’s support is non-existent and relying on the “community” to answer the question is not support. Besides, I still cannot upload a picture to the support community! So much for falling back to the “community” to provide support.

Secondly none of the current documents on Norton give any meaningful answers AND they are all written for the earlier version of the software! I am frustrated and angry the something WAS working and is NOT working now and I have been unable to get ANY real support on the matter. Otherwise you can click on items in your login home page to “upsell” more Norton products.

Enough ranting, let me resumarize the issues:

  1. Norton Version 22 (?) worked with Symless Synergy, but Version 24 does not. I cannot get any answers regarding a solution to fix other than disable the firewall completely.
  2. Support is non-existent on this issue and having to fall back to “community” support is unacceptable.
  3. Even “community” support is broken as I cannot upload screenshots. Here goes one more try. Of course is didn’t work got the “An error occurred: Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post.” error again.

This is a screenshot of my firewall setting which is “disabled” and will not allow me to edit. Why is it disabled and how can I make it editable so as to fix my issue?

This is a link to picture with exact issue (just give https and change - with /)
WE HAVE LOST CONTROL OVER NETWORK RULES!!!

https://ibb.co/Y3fD1Xb

have you tried More > Create new rule
have you tried Additional Settings > Public network exceptions
have you tried Automatic Network Control > Windows Settings Mode

Any solution to this? I’ve been using Norton since I started working there in 1998 (no longer there) and Synergy is a critical app for me to get work done. No amount of setting up port-based rules gets it working. Just have to sit here with my firewall disabled.

Norton has gotten so noisy and now this. Probably going to look at competitors at this point.

Hello. Have you checked these two settings for a possible different result? And yes!! Norton made a huge mistake baking in hard coded settings with firewall rules. Hoping that changes and soon.

Network control settings: Try using “Windows Settings Mode”

Finally figured out the solution, no thanks to the total lack of support from Norton!

It is pathetic to be forced to rely on the “community” to provide any support for the Norton software, here is the solution. The community model is even further flawed in that I cannot even post images, etc. to help describe my issues. Very frustrating. Note also the lack of support for the updated version of the antivirus software. All the support I did find, was of no use with the “new” version of the software.

For the benefit of others who have the updated antivirus software and now find themselves unable to use Symless Synergy this is the solution I discovered thru trial and error:

  1. Ensure that the synergy-core.exe and synergy-service.exe programs are allowed access thru the firewall. The easiest part of the fix.2.

  2. Create a new traffic rule. The Norton online documentation is worthless as it does not describe the rules in detail nor do they include instructions for the new antivirus version.

  3. From Security->Advanced Security->Smart Firewall->Traffic Rules (Tab), select “More”->Create new rule

  4. Enter a name for the new rule, under “Protocol” select “TCP/UDP”, under “Profile” select “All”, under “Direction” select “In”, and under “Local port” enter “24800,24802,24804”

  5. Once the rules has been entered, select it and drag to the top of the Traffic Rules list

I would show an image, but I am unable to post image files to the community forum.

Guess, what, I found out from my separate complaint about posting images that I can now post images! Here are snapshots of the screens I described in my previous post:

@David_Lovelace Thanks for the post and great info. Nice solution indeed. Most of us are still going through the can’s and cant’s of the new version as you are.
