Cannot create custom scans or run custom scan on folders-NIS2009

Seems there is a bug or issue that prevents some NIS 2009 installs fom running custom scans. Others have posted about this previously but I have not yet seen a solution or acknowledgement by Symantec.   This is on an XP SP3 system with no other antivirus or antimalware apps or firewall installed.  Specifically selecting Scan Now--->Run Custom Scan--->Scan Folders does not pull up any folders. Same issue when selecting Create Custom Scan.   However, right clicking on a specific folder to scan works just fine.

Uninstall and reinstall, running NRT, autofix, different versions, etc etc does not solve the issue.

I should add that selecting Scan Now--->Run Custom Scan--->Full System Scan or Scan Drives or Scan Files all work fine.  It is only when selecting Scan Folders or Create Custom Scan (when you try to add folders) that no folders will pull up.

System is XP Pro SP3 fully patched.  I am running 16.5.0.135.  I have tried lowered versions to 16.0 from web as well as install from cd with the same result.  Have similar setup on different pc's without problem.

What shows up on Scan Folders (and Create Custom Scan by folders) are Desktop, My Computer and My Network Places, but the Desktop and My Computer cannot be expanded or selected.  Basically the drives are not showing up under My Computer, similar to the post here http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&message.id=33430

There are a few instances of this issue on the forum but I'm not seeing a quick solution.  It appears to be a problem that was resolved in one of the updates or version changes.

Did you use the Norton removal tool between your various installations?

Did you finally install the latest version from the website? or via disc and update?

Have you also tried Help & Support> One click support?  The issue might be resolved through Chat.

Used NRTx2 everytime between different version installs.  Tried 135 directly downloaded from symantec as well as upgrade from older web versions I had, as well as upgrade from a cd version.  All with same result.

Would like to hear from symantec if this has been reported as bug or not.

This is weird.

When I open a custom scan and select folders, I get the following:

ScanList.jpg

I am unable to get to any folders not listed in the folders shown above.  I know a workaround:  Choose "sharing enabled" for your entire computer and every folder will appear in the Network structure; but that is incredibly secure and I would never do it.

This is a real bug -- either in the English or in the implementation.

Are you using any windows shell extensions?  Can you post a screen shot of a Right click on a explorer folder and / or file, please.

For the sake of comparison, here is screen print of my expanded folders

mijcar, yes, that is exactly what I am seeing as well.  It is not listing the drives.

Everything else including right click (context) scanning of folders appears to work fine

Turn off Volume Shadow Service and post the results.

Wait, you have totally lost me.

What drives?

Why should right-click show me drives?  I right-clicked on a file in Windows Explorer.  What would I want with drives?

Auuggh!

You were referring to the post above that.

Enough already.  Everyone PLEASE quote the post you are replying to, at least enough of a snippet that we know who is asking what of whom.

Who should do this?

And what is Volume Shadow Service?

sorry I wasn't more clear on my previous post

vss, volume shadow copy service... system restore uses it (as does Ghost 14)

And apparently so does mijcar.  The screen shot of the right click shows ‘Restore Previous Version’ which is what VSS shows on tracked files.  I asked that if you turn off the service, can you see the folders in the choice selection window for the custom scan?

right click shadow copy "restore previous version" is a feature of vista ultimate, business and enterprise.

I am running XP Pro SP3 on my system.

Which is why I asked for a pic posted of your right click menu.  Something in your Windows shell is blocking the access to the Windows API for folders but not drives or files (correct?); so I'm doing the 'quick view' to look for that.

And I believe you can have VSS on XP; you have to install it.  On Vista, you don't get a choice.

Mine is my mozy backup.  It shouldn't impact Norton at all.  Of course, anything is possible.

More to the point:  Dbris, your image was too small to read.  Did your screen show FULL ACCESS to any folder on your computer, or just to the contents of your document files and a few others?

Not my picture but I can tell it is full access to all folders on the system.  While I'm waiting to see the OP's right-click picture;  is your mozy backup set to monitor folders for changes or just files or what?  Doing Incremental or Full backups?  Having any other system access troubles at all?

i7 -  If you are referring to the blank triangle image holder then remember - All images are scanned per forum policy before being released for public viewing.  Give them time.
