Issue abstract:

Detailed description:

when i open norton 360 dashboard or click to close a notification box from norton, my whole system locks up and I have to run Windows Task manager and close the 5 running entries for norton in the apps box. As I like many others cannot get to a human being to speak to in norton support, can you please what i must do to stop this happening. Thanks.

Product & version number: I cannot see this as my system is locked up.

OS details:

Windows 11

What is the error message you are seeing?

If you have any supporting screenshots, please add them:

@Jonathan_Allenby Looking at your screenshot Chrome actually appears to be the memory hog being shown. Norton is actually taking about 300mb of system memory no CPU time. Have you ran live update on Norton recently before this issue began? Is your device running Windows 11 in S mode or does it have an ARM processor?

SA

Thanks SA,

no I don’t think that I’ve run live update before this issue. I cannot get to the norton history as it just locks up whenever I try to access anything ā€˜norton’.

I’m not running win 11 in S mode and the processor is an Intel(R) Coreā„¢ i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz (1.99 GHz). I am not too up on that part of the system

Thanks fo replying.

Kind regards,

Jonathan

Boot your computer into safe mode, here is how:

Try opening the system event viewer and see what entries are there regarding system crashes. Once in Safe Mode, open the Start Menu, search for ā€œEvent Viewer,ā€ and select the application to open it.

SA

Hi, I’ve entered Safe Mode and run the Event Viewer and there is no mention of any system crashes or any event concerning Norton. Is there any other event I should be looking at or should I uninstall norton and re-install it ?

Thanks again

Thanks for the post back. You can give a removal a go and see if that creates a solution for you. I recommend using the current removal too and doing a REMOVAL ONLY under advanced settings in the tool.

Version 24.xx/25.xx removal tool:
https://www.norton.com/nortonremover

*Once the removal is complete reboot. DO NOT reinstall your Norton product just yet. When rebooted ā€œmanuallyā€ locate and delete ALL folders and directories labeled Norton, Avast and Symantec, reboot again when done. Next log into your Norton account and download your Norton product again.

This should give you a clean fresh installation of Norton. Don’t forget to run live updates at least once.

SA

Thanks again. I’ve done as you said above and have downloaded the new product.

However, when I try to install the product, the system freezes on the first page.

In my opinion you have an issue with Windows. Is there any other malware software installed on the system, especially if it is set to load with Windows? Have you disable ALL sleeping tabs in ALL browsers to identify the issue?

SA

Hi, I have NordVPN running and that has threat Protection Pro running to block malware, trackers and ads.

Should I contact NordVPN about this as I had problems many months ago with running NordVPN and Norton but they had sorted this out ?

Thanks again for your support.

Having the VPN with Norton and NordVPN on the same system will cause issues. You should run one or the other, not both. If you want to use NordVPN disable the Norton VPN service in system services, set the start type to disabled. Reboot and recheck for changes. Highlight the VPN service and right mouse click to open properties. Make changes there.

SA

Hi, apologies as I have never run Norton VPN. I only use the NordVPN VPN.

When I re-installed Norton 360 yesterday, I ran into a problem getting past the Norton VPN select screen as part of the re-installation process..

So my system was locked up. When I launch the Task Manager, the Apps running display for a brief moment ā€˜Norton UI’, this then quickly changes to Norton 360 (5). Could this locking up be due to the UI not launching properly ? I’m not a professional, so I value your opinion and advice greatly.Thank you.

What I am attempting to do is have you answer this: *Boilerplate is two VPN’s on a system WILL cause issues.

-Is NORDVPN loading with Windows startup? Yes / NO If yes disable it, restart and retest!!
-Did you disable the Norton VPN service as suggested in my last post and restart? Recheck again? Whether you use or don’t use Norton’s VPN the services for it are installed by default. During setup I saw this, and used ā€œcontinue with manual vpnā€. There will not be further steps regarding the VPN after this is selected.

SA

I have disabled NordvPN to startup with Windows. Restarted the system and retest. The system is still locked up in Norton.

I have disabled Nrton VPN in Services. The system is still locked up.

With both NordVPN disabled at startup in Windows and Norton VPN disabled, and then re-installing Norton, my system is still locked up - this is despite me then going into services to again disable norton VPN.

I can see you are getting annoyed with me but I am doing my best and I appreciate your help.

Thanks again,

And further to all this, the Norton sign in screen pops up every few minutes but I cannot enter anything so Task Manager has to ā€˜End task’.

What can I do ? Can I cancel my sub ? If you are not able to help, can you please pass this on.

Thank you.

Oh no, I’m not getting annoyed at all, just going through time tested steps which help immensely. My military career taught me to work ā€œfrom the inside outā€, vice the opposite. One final suggestion is removal of NordVPN and a test restart to see if that produces a different result. I’m sticking with the issue of two VPN being installed on a system as being the issue.

If cancelling your subscription is the next avenue for you please begin that process at the link below:

SA

hi, I’ve disabled nortonvpn and also nordvpn. I shut down and boot up again. Straightaway, I get this screen and cannot click on anything to proceed.

then I check Services and:

and now I get the sign on screen pops again, so I have to use Task Manager to end the Norton tasks.

What should I do ?

Thanks

So on that login screen you cannot enter any information to log in, is that correct? Leave your system configuration as is and run the repair on your Norton installation again.

SA

I cannot use the Norton control panel and this is also blocked so I cannot run the Repair tool unless there is another way to access it ?

You should REMOVE, not disable NORDVPN and recheck.

SA

I have removed NordVPN from my system and norton is still unworkable. System freezes every time I click on anything ā€˜norton’.

Thanks
