lol I'm sure this is mentioned somewhere but for some odd reason when I typed in those keywords; the search results gave me nothing.
So allow me to vent!!
Whats the point of having allowed websites on our approved list, if they are going to be blocked by the categories we choose? I thought the purpose of having allowed websites means it bypasses the categories and lets us view it regardless.
Yet its funny because periodically I have to go thru all these hoops to allow me to view the site.
For instance: right now the site I want to visit isnt working. But guaranteed in the next 24hrs it will work and i'll have access to it, for a few weeks; then all of a sudden it says its blocked because of a category; and then when I try to remove and re add the site to my approved list I have to go thru HOOPS just to get it back.
So tell me; how come "approved" websites get blocked by our categories?
Can you please click the Norton Safety Minder icon in the System Tray and select "Update House Rules" after you edit your rule settings next time to see if it helps?

so the automatic dialog box that appears after I hit update settings on the web doesnt work?
Let me tell you what I do:
Hop on internet explorer
Access my account
Go to settings then web
Click Approved Websites
Remove Website
Add the website
Click Update Settings on Internet Explorer Page
Less than 10seconds down near my taskbar clock I see a dialog box that appears "House Rules Updated"
But then I cant access site
I go back into Internet Explorer/Account and click Update Settings again, see the box appear.......nope still cant access
10minutes+ pass and I randomly click the website that was having issues and VOILA it works.
But are YOU saying that after I click Update Settings on Internet Explorer and EVEN SEE the dialog box that appears I still need to click the Norton Online Family Icon near system tray and click Update again???
Well I will try that next time.
In the meantime how about my question? Any thoughts? (from the first post on this thread) Thanks
If a website is on the whitelist, the website should be allowed to access regardless if the categories of the website are blocked or not.
I had a suspicious that the changes hadn't synced with the servers yet. That's why I suggested you to select "Update House Rules" from NSM icon.
From your latest update, you mentioned "Less than 10seconds down near my taskbar clock I see a dialog box that appears 'House Rules Updated'". That should have updated the latest changes with the servers.
Please let us know what happens if you manually click "Update House Rules" from NSM icon.
Also, please check to see if you have the latest version 2.1.0.51 of Norton Safety Minder (NSM icon in system tray -> About Norton Safety Minder) on the PCs? If not yet, please click on the Download Norton Safety Minder link on Online Family main page https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs
Do you have a time when version 2.1.0.51 was officially launched?
I noticed it was WAY after I made these posts that the application had an update.
So I guess let me ask you this, or say this lol
If by chance version 2.1.0.51 was available Monday and I didnt get the update til Tuesday afternoon, I guess that would explain why everything was kinda messed up LOL
The update is available through LiveUpdate. You should be able to receive it very soon. You can also install it right away if you download it from the Online Family main Web page as I indicated in the previous post.
I have added that URL to my "allowed websites"; now when I view an article of News that has a video; the video will not load at all; mainly because theres a quick advertisement that plays before the show but still.
Now even though I have 'advertising' checked as a category to block; like I said I have added 'www.ncwn.com' to my "allowed websites" so again I shouldnt have a problem right?
Well I've tried 3 browsers: Internet Explorer 7, MSN Explorer and Mozilla Firefox; all wouldnt load the video.
I disabled Norton Safety Minder altogether and loaded the page and the video played just fine.
Now the link below here, isnt the actual article I wanted; I just grabbed a video related news article to see what you can come up with.
BlockAllow (all this does, is a search filter; you cant search for the words: nude/nudity/topless/shirtless etc)
I have Malware Bytes installed but I believe that not to be set automatically; its all manual
HiJack This (again manual not automatic)
Ok thats weird; I just went into service.msc and it says that Windows Fireall is running but when I go to Control Panel it says its turned off; so I dont know
Would you like me to personally email you my direct x info; or some sort of system configuration file?
Since you have Norton Internet Security 2011 on the PC running, please uninstall Malware Bytes temporarily and visit a website that is on the allowed list, but the categories of the website are blocked to see if you are still experiencing issue.
lol Ok that would be odd if that solved the problem.
I did un install MalWare Bytes; thankfully I hardly use that program anyways but after un installing I visited the Northwest Cable News webpage and attempted to view a link that had a video on it and it started up ok,
After a week I'll come back with my results. Thanks
Wow what is this; once a week and I'm back with more problems?? Grrr
Well another site is www.cbs.com here I am trying to watch Hawaii 5-0 Episodes and while it has worked for me in the past it isnt tonight
I had it on my allowed websites (reason why I'm posting again) and yet Norton Safety Minder pops up saying its an advertisement site.
Now sure I can submit a site categorization error but I believe my previous question still remains unsolved "how long when I submit a site categorization error will it be fixed or get a response back"
Anyways so I am disabling Norton Safety Minder for the duration of the episode only to re enable it again.
I checked the Hawaii 5-0 videos on the cbs.com site. I did get a few pop-up messages, but these didn't stop the videos that I tested. On the web page, there are a few links and buttons from other URLs (not cbs.com) and they are considered as Advertisement or the categories that you might have selected to be blocked.
No I wasnt (able to watch); well I did by disabling Norton Safety Minder but not with it enabled.
Actually what I did was go to hulu.com; typed in Hawaii 5-0 and the videos there (full episodes) provided a shortcut link to CBS.
I do have advertising checked on my Norton Safety Minder (blocked)
So when I click the video I get the Norton Safety Minder message "cannot view cause this is advertising"
Disabling Norton Safety Minder allowed me to watch the Episode.
When watching TV shows I do get some commercials. Regardless of the TV Show.
Speaking of TV Shows lets talk:
I watch: NCIS and NCIS: LA
I watch CSI; CSI: MIami and CSI: NY
I watch Hawaii 5-0
I watch Happy Endings
All these TV shows are either from TV.com or Hulu.com with the shortcut to their main site (CBS). I havent had any issues lately with any of these shows except Hawaii 5-0 right now. CSIs plays commercials while watching the program and so does NCIS: I believe they are from CBS as well so I just dont understand why Norton is blocking it.
Besides I still have www.cbs.com in my "allowed websites to view" list which again should bypass any category I have blocked right?
Okay once again; I've had Norton Safety Minder installed since January 1st, I've probably enabled Advertising since end of January and have had www.nwcn.com added to my "Allowed Sites to visit" yet today (right this minute) I cannot view any news articles because the website is classified as "Advertising"
I think I'm going to create a new thread and ask about the levels of advertising; meanwhile I'm going to uncheck my Advertising off in my settings for me to view it all the time (which will alleviate 99.99% of all my problems)
I checked these videos on hulu.com website and I was able to reproduce what you described. Looks like the links to these videos are categorized as Advertising. The Domain of all these links is http://thumbnails.cbsig.net. If you add the link http://thumbnails.cbsig.net to the allowed list, you should be able to watch the videos even with the Advertising category checked (I have tested it out and it worked for me).
You asked "I still have www.cbs.com in my "allowed websites to view" list which again should bypass any category I have blocked right?"
When a user visits a website, the program doesn't just check the url of the website, but also check the links on the page. You can be allowed to visit www.cbs.com, but still get blocked when trying to access certain links on the page where the categories of the links are blocked.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
