Dead in the Water

My installation of Ghost is trashed for some reason- it'll never finish a new base ( a base normally takes 9 hours; I've let it run 17). Soo..install go to install & reinstall it, and I get this:

Capture2.JPG

...and then it stops & reverts the uninstallation process.

Soo...I try to install a fresh copy over that, with the intent of uninstalling everything afterwards. No deal. It won't install new until the old is gone. I've tried 'repair' (I get same message), I've tried to uninstall from the install package (same message), I've tried 'modify' (same message).

I've tried using the Norton Removal Tool. Bad, bad, bad. It removes drivers for my systems built-in memory card readers (camera type- SD etc.)

Thoughts? I hope I don't have to reload my entire O.S. clean just because I can't remove this Symantec program! (System Restore isn't an option unfortunately).

Thank you.

How old is your last good image before the problem started, have you considered restoring that?

The rocket scientist I am, I removed the old backup jobs prior to uninstalling, or trying anyway to uninstall. I was simply going to reinstall and start over. Yeah sure. As far as what was asked in the above post, I haven't run any diagnostics. I'm 999.999% sure it's not a malware issue, and I'm not sure what Windows troubleshooters will reveal since this appears to be specific to this program.

But thanks guys.

It's not malware, it's a windows installer problem.

Edit- I never tried this but this "fix it" tool is for problems with windows installer. (MSI files).

I think I seen someone say it gives a list of products that were installed with windows installer and you can select the one your having problems with uninstalling.

Perhaps this might work too?..

Unfortunately, there was nothing in that folder- I peeked at the beginning of this journey. By uninstalling, all data, folders, etc., were gone- nothing Ghost or Symantic referenced in: Programs, Programs (x86), Program data, App Data, the Registry- running or otherwize- nothing in Services. But when you tryed to install a new copy, it still knew, somehow, that it was still there and roll back.

You were right. A level one Ghost tech couldn't figure this out, it was esculated to a level two tech/manager. He ended up running the 'Windows Installer Clean Up' program (different from link above- but perhaps similar), and that solved everything. He was working in DOS, I don't think he ran to the Web to get the program, instead I believe this turned out to be a local utility that's built into the Windows O.S.
Thanks to all!
