hi iana,

I have never used the Norton 360 backup so what I mention below is just something I found on the internet;

You've probably gone through this and I apologise if it is of no help to you at all ...... but maybe it will help others looking for the general route to deleting their backup.

This has been taken from a non english version apparently and buttons may be worded differently;

  1.  Open Norton 360 and in the main window click Backup and Restore.
  2. Click Change backup settings link at the bottom
  3. Select Secure online storage and click Remove all backed up files
  4. After a while Norton 360 will show up a window with a list of computers you are using with this software
  5. Select a computer that has backed up files you would like to remove and click OK

This is the main idea indeed

Hi Iana,

I have sent you an email wih some follow-up information. Please reply as soon as possible, and we can resolve this issue for you. Thanks!

Thanks, Liverbird (I'm a Polly man, myself:smileywink:)

I think that what you found must relate to V1.  I should have mentioned that I'm using V2.  It's different. anyway - no option to do what you found.

Ian

Iana,

I'm having the exact same problem as you, and spent a frustrating evening trying to resolve with online support to remove a back up set from a PC which no longer has 360 V2 on and I no longer own, but is using 1GB of my back up space! He was very helpful but could'nt resolve and sent me a link to a another support session..... I thought I would pass on that for the moment..

Has Symantec resolved your issue? If so any info would be gratefully received, before I have to have a rant!

hi double3.

Not actually resolved yet, but Tony Weiss has emailed me outside of the forum and seems to understand the problem very well.  I'm confident that it will be sorted in a day or so.

cheers

Ian

Silly me; I forgot the important bit for you.......  Though it's not much help.   I believe that this is something that you cannot resolve yourself.  From suggestions received, it seems that V1 used to let you delete files from another PC's backup sets (well, one that belonged under your account), but it looks like this was felt out/designed out of V2.  I also suspect that there is bug somewhere that allows multiple backup sets with the saem nickname to be created - conjecture on my part, but it fits the facts.

Anyhow, keep watching, and I'll post an update when it is resolved.

Ian,

Thanks for the update, I guessed as much from other forums that I was on a dead end to solving. I hope this is resolved very soon as I have no online back up at the moment, and it is so convenient, and the subscription ticks away.....

I hope we hear something soon!! :smileysad:

Unfortunately there is no option to completely clear your storage space. Please see the following post for more information:

Tony,

This basically means I can no longer use Norton 360 to backup then, as I cannot remove the backup set which no longer is in use from a system I no longer have? I can't even delete files singularly from this back up set.

When is this bug going to be resolved and in the mean time what are symantec going to do about this for customers who have this problem and have purchsed the product because it has this feature? This smacks of poor change nd release management from version 1 - 2. If you cannot help me resolve my issue, please can you pass me onto a customer service manager. I will also be feeding back to my UK Symantec account manager about this issue, and the lack of confidence I have in this type of change and release, especially as i am just about to migrate 25K clients to symantec end point security across our WAN. I hope bugs aren't treated in the same manner.....

Tony,

I guess that this was not your response, but one that you were told to give.  And I guess that you also know how completely unacceptable it is.  I cannot believe that there is no way that what I need doing can be achieved, albeit that it may need to go as a far as requiring support from your Operations and/or Development staff to remove the data centrally.

So, the message that you have passed on is that Symantec is not prepared to put put in the effort to right a problem that they have caused.  That is an appalling way to treat your customers.

Well, it cannot stop there.  I no longer wish to remain a customer of Symantec and, as such, I demand that my data now be removed from your systems now that you no longer have any need nor right to hold it.

I reserve the right to continue to use a copy of your software on one of my PCs until such times as I have sufficient evidence that this.

The service provided is evidently unfit for purpose and the software used to access is not of merchantable quality.  I am therefore wholly justified in demanding that I am refunded the money paid for the software.  I purchased it via the Symantec on-line store, so that refund should come from Symantec.  Please commence arrangements for this.

I shall not bother to contact my UK Account Manager re this problem.  However, I shall be contacting the Global Head of IT Security within my organisation.  It won't cause us to remove your software from around 300,000 PCs around the work, I know.  But then again, it can't.  You lost out to McAfee last time we reviewed our global standard product set.  I shall do my best to ensure that the same happens next time.

I look forward to hearing from you re my refund.  It will presumably be repaid to the account of the credit card that I used.

I believe that you wanted to give me the service that I deserve, and I thank you for that.  You have my sympathies.

Sincerely

Ian

I may be able to help remove data from backup sets which you can no longer access directly.  If you are (still) having this problem and would like me to take a look at it I would be happy to see what can be done. If you would like some help, send me a PM and I will get back to you ASAP.

[Val, talking to himself at his computer]

"Too bad Norton can't tell me how to delete the backed-up files..... If they did, then I wouldn't have to keep buying more storage space."

[more silence]

[realization spreads over Val's face]

"Oh, now I get it."

Has this thread been taken into account for future features of 360 backup/restore process ? I am having the same issue and having to delete 1000s of files manually is soul destroying … plus the fact, even if I select only a few files the gui just hangs … I have even left it for a few days to see if it will complete … needs more work guys … I rely on this for off-site storage and I have paid for 30GB so I would like to be able to manage the storage a little better via the gui …

The Online Backup feature convinced me to upgrade to Premium and to renew my subscription. The automatic-backup setting is of particular importance to me as I generate large amounts of essential data every day. I had hoped to rely on this feature to gain peace-of-mind, and to obviate the need to subscribe to an additional product.

The inability to delete stored data is, at best, loopy, and, at worst, crafty. My backups become trash after one or two months. If storage were free, like Google’s unlimited “never delete another email” feature, or, unlimited storage were available in return for a one-time fee or a reasonably priced yearly subscription, then, of course, this would be a non-issue. Such is not the case, however. Norton’s offering already is quite expensive, and, the only thing that is unlimited is the ongoing cost of purchasing more and more room for obsolete, unwanted data.

At the risk of showing my age, I have been a loyal Norton fan since the invention of “Norton Commander”, perhaps the very first DOS “GUI”. It was streamlined, easy to use, and a wildly advanced technology for its time. What a shame that the developers of 360 are too young to remember Peter Norton’s beginnings.

No, I am not going to abandon Symantec. “I’d rather fight than switch!” (again, showing my age) .

With the hope that there are still some old-timers at Symantec who get it, and that the CFO will realize that the revenue stream generated by forcing customers to purchase useless amounts of storage will be short-lived because we will switch either to another online backup service or to another product altogether…

Regards,

Val

Hi bellator7,

Thank you for letting us know about your concerns regarding Online Backup.  As stated in other threads on this forum, we are looking into revising the backup process in the next version for Norton 360, and your help is certainly appreciated. Scott Moen has mentioned in this thread and others that you should send him a Private Message to "clean out" your online backup for now. Thank you for your understanding in this matter, and for remaining a loyal Symantec customer.

Thanks very much!
