Do Not Recognize my Web Browser

When I try to open 'account' or 'support/get support' or 'comments' in my Norton 360, the system says "Could not start browser: Norton 360 could not start your default Web browser. Please verify that you have a Web browser installed."

Forum topic "Norton Community -> Norton Products -> Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus -> Do Not Recognize my Web Browser" tells us how to set IE as the default browser.

But what if we prefer to use Firefox or Chrome? How do we set that as the default browser?

Hi,

can you please tell us the exact version of your Norton product?

1. Open the main window

2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu

3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 18.5.0.125)

Thanks!

Sure! 18.1.0.37

Hi Lucius_Artorius,

Can you translate for us what the NIS error dialog window says word for word?

What is your default browser?

If you are using IE check the following. Click on Tools > Internet Options and then on the options window click on the "Program" tab.

What does it show on the top is the default browser? If it does not show IE as being the default browser, click on "Make Default" and Apply and OK.

See if this resolves the problem you are seeing.

If you are using something other than IE as your primary browser please let us know.

Best wishes.

Allen

Problem solved, Allen. Your questions gave me the clue and inspired me. The problem was some days ago I installed Google Chrome. Then, I uninstalled it but I forgot to mark Firefox  -my favorite- as my regular browser again, or even IE. So, NIS believe that my PC have no web browser installed. Now is working right.

Thanks to You.

Hi Lucius_Artorius,

You are most welcome. I am happy to have been able to help. :smileyhappy:

Best wishes and Happy New Year.

Allen

Running Windows Pro 7

Using IE (v 11), Firefox (v 26.0) & Chrome (v 32.0)

I ran IE and set it to be the default browser

I started Norton 360 & clicked on Feedback

It still said

"Could not start browser: Norton 360 could not start your default Web browser. Please verify that you have a Web browser installed."

Try changing it through the control panel like I oulined above.

Set it to IE and then reboot and see if it works now.

If it does you can then try changing it to another browser.  (Hope you pick Firefox because I never tried it with Chrome)

I've tried all of that, but Norton 360 still doesn't think that I have a web browser

If it can't find a default, why doesn't it let me set one?

    Steve

Have you uninstalled any browsers at some time in the past?

Who knows? I've been using this laptop for some years. I haven't uninstalled any recently

Hi Steve. If you wish to check Firefox as your default browser, just open it and click Tools/Options/Advanced/General.

There at the bottom of the page is Always check to to see if Firefox is the default browser on start up.

If so, it will say underneath that FF IS the default browser.

Have you run Autofix to see if it finds anything ?

You may need to reinstall Firefox and/or 360. If so, we can provide advice on reinstalling 360 painlessly !

Google Chrome at one time refused to relinquish the role of "default browser" upon uninstalling.  This left the system with a default browser that was no longer available.  If you have uninstalled Chrome at one time without reinstalling it, you need to reinstall it, make it the default, then change the default to IE, and then uninstall Chrome again.  This problem goes back a ways and is no longer an issue, but it wouldn't hurt to try this, especially if you uninstalled an older version of Chrome in the past.

I always used to have Firefox as my default browser, before I tried setting IE as my default browser following the advice given here. I mainly only use Firefox but I also have IE, Chrome and a few other browsers installed so that I can check that things that I create work OK on all common browsers

If I click on a URL in Excel or Word then it opens that page - in Firefox

They seem to realise that Firefox is my default browser, why can't Norton 360?

Yes, that's all set as you describe

> Have you run Autofix to see if it finds anything ?

What's Autofix?

Everything looks OK & seems to work OK - except Norton 360 which works OK in all regards apart from this browser thing. But that prevents me from using the Feedback or the Support -> Help options

Thanks

If you click on Support/Get Support in the UI, it will run the automated Autofix Tool.

It's worth running it occasionally, just to see if the installation is working as it should.

Clicking on Support/Get Support in the UI doesn't do anything noticeable

Change it back to IE as the default browser.

Use notepad to make a file on your desktop test.txt

Copy and paste the following into and save it

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN">
<HTML>
   <HEAD>
      <TITLE>
         A Big Hello
      </TITLE>
   </HEAD>
<BODY>
   <H1>Hello World</H1>
   <P>This is a test HTML page.</P>
</BODY>
</HTML>

Close the text file and then rename it to test.html

Did the icon of the file change to a blue E?

If you double click it does it open IE?

Dave

Yes, and while the default browser is set to IE, clicking on a URL link in Excel or Word takes me to that URL in IE

But Norton 360 still doesn't think that I have a browser

Ane when I change the default browser back to Firefox, double clicking on test.html opens it in Firefox, clicking on a URL link in Excel or Word takes me to that URL inFirefox

But Norton 360 still doesn't think that I have a browser

It seems that everything is working as expected - apart from Norton 360  :smileyfrustrated:
