Duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window

In the  "Notification Area Icons" window, there are 2 "Symantec Service Framework" icons.

The first  "Symantec Service Framework" is right at the start while the second  "Symantec Service Framework" icon is in the middle of the list after Action Centre icon (see attached screenshot)

I think the reason for the duplicate is I upgraded NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 yesterday. I installed NIS 2011 on top of NIS 2010. The reason of the upgrade was to address a different issue as per the link:

How can I remove the duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons" window ?

Thanks.

The icons can be a bit odd sometimes depending on the system.  I think there are two because there are two components in Norton; system and user.  I found the easiest way to deal with it is to set one of the icons to "show" and the other to "hide."  I still have two Symantec Service Frameworks, but only one has an icon now.  It seems to clear up with a few updates.

Rebooting did not help. I did it again and I am still getting a duplicate "Symantec Service Framework" icon in "Notification Area Icons".

I think, in my case, it is due to installing NIS2011 over NIS2010. Not unless, every NIS computer has the duplicate.

Is there a way to remove the duplicate?

Try reinstalling Norton and hopefully that may help.

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:

  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually (not quite sure why on Windows 7 the NRT doesn’t prompt a reboot).

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

I don't think there is a problem (or it's a minor windows issue) all the 64 pc's here have 2 icons showing in notification but only one actually shows. this was the case with 2010 and 2011. I just show the top top one.

I only show one icon on my Win7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I have windows 7 home premium x64 and I only see one icon. Try logging out and back in again. I remember once two icon appeared and when I did this procedure, the second icon goes away.

Hi tunguska,

As Delphinium mentioned earlier this does not cause a functional problem. As long as NIS is operating normally and is showing secure then having two icons will not hurt anything.

I would recommend simply hiding one of them by selecting "Hide Icons and Notifications" from the drop down list.

Also to make sure, did you run Live Update after installing NIS 2011?

Best wishes.

Allen

Thank you all for your inputs.

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

• I have Norton 360 Version 1.0
• I have a Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011 product
• I have Norton Security Suite or Norton Business Suite
• I have Norton SystemWorks 12.0
• I have a Norton 2005 or 2004 product
• I have a Norton 2003 product

• I have pcAnywhere or WinFax

Tywin7:

1. I don't see NIS listed there, think it is this "Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011 product " is the one, is it?

2. Have you personally tried it and it remove the duplicate icon?

Allen:

1. Good to know it will not cause a functional problem. Yes, I ran Live Update, shutdown, restart many times and still the duplicate icon is showing.

2. If uninstalling NIS2011 completely and reinstalling NIS2011 works, I am tempted to try it, this is a brand new computer, I'm in the midst of setting up software etc so I might as well clean it up. Do you think it is ok for me to uninstall/reinstall or I should leave it as it is?

Thanks.

Yes that's the one.

What I did was log out of Windows *not shutdown* and log out again.  But I usually don't get double icons so assumed that it was a minor glitch.  It didn't happened after that. To log out of windows go to start-->arrow after shutdown-->log off. Then log back in again.

One more question. Does NIS icon actually shows as double in the notification area not just in the list.   Because if its just in the list, then it is a remninant of an old NIS icon that WIndows keep as "history." The list shows what is and was in the notification area, not only what is currently there.

The question is a little confusing to me. It showed up as double in the screenshot I attached in the PDF file in the first post.

Something new to me about Windows keeping the old  "Symantec Service Framework" icon as history. I was thinking it is more of a bug, the NIS 2011 install did not remove the old  "Symantec Service Framework" icon. It would be horrifying that by the time I install NIS 2020, I have 10  "Symantec Service Framework" icons as history icons.

I wouldn't mind leaving this as it is as nothing is broken.

Since I'm in the midst of setting up this new computer, I would not mind cleaning this mess. If unstalling NIS and reinstalling NIS will remove the double icon, it might help to answer questions for other users who has the same issue.

One question:  A couple years back, I uninstall/reinstall, NIS is not smart enough to know I am still installing on the same computer and used up another license. I want to confirm this reinstall will not take up another licence of my 3-user version? If it will not take up another license, I may want to try uninstall and reinstall.

Your screenshot did not show up when I first read the message.

It showed up now.

Yes, there was no double in the `list` as per the screenshot.

If there is actually no double in the notification area, its probably Windows archieving old list to clear this, download and run CCleaner.  Check and tick all the options in "Windows Explorer" and as in the below screenshot.  Then when it finishes, restart explorer.exe.

To know how many computers you have left in your subscription go to start-->All Programs-->Norton Internet Security-->Get support. There you can contact customer service and ask them.

As seen with the screenshot below, the area in the black retangle is the notification area. Do you see double icon there or a single icon (as in the screenshot).

Checked all  check boxes in  "Windows Explorer" options of ccleaner. Run ccleaner. Next restart explorer.exe as per instructions. The duplicate icon is still showing. Next restart Windows. Same results , duplicate icon is still showing.

Your screenshot in this post has not displayed yet.

And the third screenshot has not displayed yet, cannot answer that question yet.

Try checking all checkmarks except the wipe free space option and then restart explorer.exe.  The double icon appear in the actual notification area or just the list ONLY?

Post number 12 shows the notification area (The icon beside the clock as well as the area above the arrow).

The double icon does not shows up in the system tray (area beside the clock as well as the area above the arrow).

The double icon showed up in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons.

Did you mean in CCleaner checking all checkmarks of

- Internet Explorer

- Windows Explorer

-System

- Advanced

Except the last checkmark "wipe free space" of Advanced?

Yes. But do you store any password with Internet Explorer? If so you may want to leave the last option in Internet Explorer alone.  After Ccleaner is done, restart explorer.exe.  All your custom arrangement in your favorites as well as your custom notification area position customization will be reset.
