I just purchased NIS on 12/28/2008 and getting same error, with sonar not loading. I followed procedures and reinstalled, and it still has the same problem.
Dear Friends,
I have NIS 2009 on my laptop with Win XP Pro with SP3. I did not have problems with the Trial version of NIS 2009 and after that I bought NIS 2009 and it was fine for about 10 days. Today I started having the "Sonar failed to load !! 3039 Error" which is driving me crazy. I would be thankfull to anyhelp to resolve this issue. The NIS icon is red. I tried to do a live update and tried to restrart. After restart its ok for sometime and after sometime the NIS icon turns red and the problem starts. I am not sure whether my pc is still protected.
Also my windows is restarting with the message "dcom server process launcher failed". I don't know if this is related to NIS 2009. Because after the NIS 2009 sonar problem started i got the windows restarting problem also.
Kindly help me. I really pissed off with this.
Thanks.

Elango
Same issue here as everyone else.... Used the 'removal tool' 3 times before downloading NIS2009 and still no resolution of the problem. Liveupdate fails to complete everything except virus definitions. Was online with a tech for almost 2 hours... no results. His recommendation was to run liveupdate again in 24 hours --- uh, you can guess the rest.
Just joined the forum after reading all the posts. On 10/31, Admin Tim from Symantec said they were working on the fix --- its now 2009 and this is obviously an ongoing issue for a bunch of us. If we are posting, imagine how many are experiencing the same thing not knowing where to turn.
Although my virus definitions are up to date, its still bothersome that for a week (and much longer for some of you) the other critical definitions are not up to date. I'll just stay tuned to this thread and hope for the best... unless, of course, my system crashes due to lack of protection...
lol.
I only have a few days left on my subscription and this issue has still not been fixed for me since 2009 came out. I’m very hesitant to renew and considering jumping ship to another product at this point.
I've had NAV 2009 for just a few days now and can't get rid of the 3039,1 error. The Indian chat help folks always resort to NRT and reinstall, but to no avail.
Why hasn't this been fixed yet?
I just purchased NIS 2009 today for my laptop and I’m having the same issue. After my computer has been turned on ten minutes or so, I get this error. Hopefully something is done to resolve this quickly, it’s very annoying. Is the lack of SONAR going to make my computer much more vulnerable?
Hi Guys,
I did have this error for weeks but initially upgrading from 2008 to the free 2009 caused a massive corruption on my XP sp3 computer losing all association with all file types which took me a week to resolve re-establishing each file type using free utilities from Doug Knox.
I, like many of you used the online techs who removed Norton several times without success to cure 3039 errors and ended up saying it was Microsoft problem.
However about 2 weeks ago I came to the computer to see an update request on screen from Norton which I thought "what have I got to lose?" and this installed and rebooted to good ever since.
I did have very very slight problems with MS media player taking ages to do anything and suspected perhaps a slight corruption in the registry .
As I previously suggested Microsoft install utility MSI could be the cause of all this rubbish with either Norton or Microsoft bad code?
So in short I am now OK but still receive news of 3039 issues, unresolved for the majority of you.
All my programs are set to update automatically.
I will only renew Norton if this is finally and fully resolved.

Dear Friends,
I believe Norton Techs could help to resolve this problem for all of us. After I had this problem, I tried to unistall NIS 2009, but the uninstall screen was showing preparing to uninstall for more than 30 minutes and not doing anything. I called up the technical support and a person from India tried to do a remote connect to my computer to uninstall but ultimately screwed up furthur and while he was trying a virus came in affected my computer.
My suggestion to anyone who wants to take help of norton tech support guys, please think twice before you take their help. Because its better to leave with a software problem than having a virus problem. I had a very bad experience with the tech guys.
My request to the NIS 2009 Tech guys(real tech team) to help to resolve this problem. Atleast if you think that this is not a nis problem and if its some other problem, please give that information clearly so that everyone knows what to do. Also tell if NIS 2009 works best on Win XP Pro SP2 or SP3?
Thanks.

Saying that this that is a MS problem or is caused by something else is crazy. It may be a conflict with something, but it is Norton itself that is having the problem and causing Sonar/Advanced Protection not to work.
Either they went about implementing this protection the wrong way and caused the conflict, had an unforseen conflict, or just plain don't feel the problem is big enough to warrant putting it to the top of the list (even though it's the longest standing problem with 2009) and fixing it, the fact remains it's a problem with NIS09.
This issue seemed to resolve itself. It’s now working correctly. Most likely, because I did registry repair.
What did you use for the registry repair?
NIS 2009 worked find for about three months and then started showing two errors: 3039,1 and a second one that I don’t remember now that kept from updating the version. It is running 16.2.0.7 but I keep getting the 3039,1 error and the message that the advanced protection is not working. THis is on a Vista machine; two XP machines are fine on our network.
I Got NIS 2009 + Systemwork 2 pack for Christmas from my wife. I installed it 4 days ago on my new computer I also got for Christmas. For 3 days it works fine updates are good no errors and loving my new computer. Today had the day off planned on spending most of my day playing some games. Does this get to happen? NO I spend the first 3 hours trying to remove 2 viruses and some spyware off from my computer. I'm mad! I first try to use Nortons to remove the viruses only to find that for some reason Norton will not work properly Advanced protection will not work and some sonar program will not work and the virus somehow disabled Nortons connection to the net so it wont update or get online support.
So I have been in computers long enough to know how to find out how to remove unwanted spyware and some viruses off my computer without needing Nortons help. I use a few programs like Spybot and Your Uninstaller to remove just about all of it. At this point it frees up Nortons to reconnect to the net and Nortons takes care of the rest which wasn't much I did the bulk of the job. I am mad at this point I had to use a free program like spybot to find and remove what the $89 product should have. And Spent many hours doing it.
So with everything gone and doing several checks and everything back to normal. Nortons pops up out of nowhere with a one click support error 3040,10057 And it wants me to uninstall F'ing NORTONS!! So I get on the phone and call support only to wait for 45 min on hold. As Im waiting I find this post and hang up because I see 3 things. First I'm not alone tons of people are going through the same thing. Second The phone support did not help any others in this forum and in one case made things worse. And Third THERE IS NO FIX?!? OMG this thread was started 12 days shy of 3 months now And there is no fix? I understand things take time but this is a bit long and is now costing Nortons money by reading other post. What I want to know now is when Will the problem be fixed? And do the people like myself get subscription time added to our account because services we bought was not available to us that we purchased?
I know Im long winded here but after all that happened I needed to rant.

I just spent several days dealing with this problem. I finally spoke to an upper level Indian tech who suggested that I revert from NA 2009 to NA 2008. Did this earlier today and so far no problems. The tech explained that the only difference between 2008 and 2009 was that 2009 used less system overhead and throughput was a little faster.
I have had a few chats with the support group that informs that a fix is in process and should have been delivered by now. However, the problem continues.
I too have just started getting this 3039,1 error on jan 5 2009.
What registry repair tool worked for you Grimm?
dperry112, did support tell you the downloads would be available soon? Does the connection to Norton updates site actually work? If the updates are being blocked or disabled by a virus, how does the update download work? I've tried running the update tool several times. Sometimes is says it downloads something, and other times it says everything is up to date.
I'm running NAV2009 (online upgrade from NAV2008 in December) on XP sp3
I am very disappointed in Symatec.
I was a Norton Utilities die hard from the early days... I was a Norton customer for at least 12 years straight.
I left about 5 years ago, after getting disappointed with several products, overhead and quality.
After much investigation and searching, I decided to give Symantec a try again. I purchased a 3 PC version of Norton Internet Security 2009. I felt it would provide the best protection with the least amount of overhead.
I installed it on my laptop, and continue to get these errors. Ok, I am in the business, so I understand errors. What I don't understand is the same cut and paste response from supposedly 'live' operators.
I have followed all the suggestions. I have uninstalled, several times in a row... and re-installed at least 6 times now. I have owned this product for a week. I will not be putting on any other PC's until the issue is resolved.
What Symantec fails to understand is that setting customer expectations is VERY important. If you say a fix will be available in the next 24 to 48 hours, it will work for a couple of days. After that, a cut and paste of the original message, leaves the customer feeling disgusted.
Sadly I am feeling buyers remorse.
Norton Support, this message is for you. I have a brand new laptop from Lenovo, it is fully updated with XP, SP3 and all subsequent patches. Norton is the only product installed.
I will let you have complete access, if you can't recreate the problem in house, I have recreated it at least 6 times.
I have done all I can... telling me to uninstall and re-install ever 24 to 48 hours will not work for me anymore.
I found this thread yesterday while trying to fix the same error (3039). When I tried to uninstall, Norton (IS 2009) would quit responding. I then tried the Norton Removal Tool, and it too quit responding.
Until then I was positive that this was an issue with my Norton software. But after not being able to uninstall, I then downloaded and ran malwarebytes. I was surprised to see that it found several trojans and after they were removed I have no more errors with NIS 2009.
I am sure most of you have already made certain your computer was clean when trying to fix this problem, but I thought I would post this in case someone has not.
Good luck!
Thank you for the post WHATFORE, believe it or not, I downloaded malwarebytes and ran it too, although my system was clean.
Let us know if you see the error again.
"What did you use for the registry repair?"
I used registry booster. I don't know for sure if that was the fix, but it didn't hurt. Plus, it could've removed some registry errors that caused problems.
