Error 8504,104 plus unable to connect to internet nor uninstall nis

Just got the Norton error message 8504,104. Tried a number of the listed fixes to no avail. I cannot remove NIS with the removal tool because I cannot connect to the internet to download it. When I try to uninstall NIS through the control panel it will not do it, it does nothing. I have tried a hard shutdown which did not work.  Any ideas?

Hi garbo, and welcome. These codes relate to some kind of file corruption, and may be fixed by using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will replace your current version with a clean one. The link is here. http://www.norton.com/nrnr

After the reinstall, run Live Updates until no more are found.

"  cannot remove NIS with the removal tool because I cannot connect to the internet to download it"

Hi F4E,

And how will the user will solve this problem before download & use NRnR??

How will he/she be able to download?

Regards,

As Apostolic noted I cannot download anything to try to fix this. I cannot connect to the internet. And I did try to uninstall NIS through the control panel and nothing happens.

Today a friend gave me a copy of the download power erase and recovery tool and I could load them but could not get either to run or do anything.

Hi garbo,

I can think of a few choices, can your friend download the Norton Removal Tool onto  a USB drive and let you try to use it that way?

Do you by chance have a CD for NIS?  If so, have you tried to reinstall NIS from the CD?  As crazy as it sounds, perhaps the uninstall got corrupted and one way that works sometimes (without having to go into the registry) is installing the program again and then trying to connect to the internet and or trying to remove it via the Control Panel and see if that improves things.

Hi yank
I was able to reinstall NIS from the CD, all my icons returned, but it could not connect to the internet to activate . Then I tried to remove it with the Removal Tool from a USB drive and that seems to have worked in that NIS is gone and I have the internet back. What now? Do I really want to reinstall the problem? Kind of kidding, but that is the next step?

Hi Apotolos,
Just want to apologize for spelling your name wrong earlier. Thanks for helping.

Hi, Apostolos. I was expecting that the O/P would regain internet access sooner or later, and then have the option of using the NRRT.

Plus, he couldn't remove it using Program and Features in Control Panel. As it is, yank has offered several options.........

Hi again, garbo. If you can download the NRRT while you have internet access and then install NIS from the disc, you could then run the NRRT to clean up the install.

Maybe my fellow users may have a better idea ?

Hi garbo,

As I understand it, at present you have internet connectivity and also do not have NIS installed.

If NIS is not installed at present the tool that F4E suggested will not work - it will tell you that you have no Norton program installed and stop at that point.

I would like you to try to go to www.nortonaccount.com , sign in with the email address and passwrod youused when you initially registered your NIS.  Once signed in, locate the current NIS license and click on the Yellow Download button associated with it.  This will download, insatll and activate a fresh install of the most current version of NIS.  If it installs correctly nd you still have internet, please run LiveUpdate (rebooting if requested) until such time as LiveUpdate responds with the specific words "no updates found".

Please let us know how thnigs go.

Hi all,

I was in the middle of explaining my current status when everything disappeared so don't know if it was posted or not so excuse my repeating myself...

After using the NRT and getting rid of NIS and getting internet access back I reloaded NIS from my CD. This got as far as activating the product which it would not do because I lost the internet again.

Then I got a download on a USB drive of the NRRT.  I don't remember exactly the sequence here but when I inserted the USB into my PC the internet was suddenly back on and I ran the NRRT and IT WORKED!   This allowed me to reinstall a new clean version of NIS from the website without using my CD.  So I am presently back up and running and all seems good.

I thank you ALL for your help.

Know anything about getting rid of Norton Utilities 16???

Hi,

Open Control Panel and from Programs & Features, Uninstall a program, uninstall NU 16.

Reboot your pc.

Regards,

Hi Apostolos,

Yep I tried that and it says the file is missing and that i need to fix that or obtain a new copy of the program.  Ever since I installed it it has been a problem and I just wanted to get rid of it.  I installed it from a CD but as soon as I ran it the first time it updated to a new version and it says it's up to date but I can't seem to delete it.  It says it's missing but it is still there and I can even run it - just not deleted it.

Regards,

Here is information in rgards to what the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool does to Norton programs:

The Norton Remove and Reinstall tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer, and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product. If you have any other utility products like Norton SystemWorks, Norton Ghost, pcAnywhere, or Norton Utilities, you have to reinstall them manually. Before you proceed, make sure that you have the installation media or the downloaded installation files of those products. For more information on redownloading your other Norton products, read Reinstalling your other Norton products after you run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

Hi yank,

When I try to reinstall Utilities 16 it stops the install and says it's because there is a newer version on my computer.  Therefore the CD is invalid but I have nothing on the newer version in that it updated to that automatically when I first ran the program from the CD.

The error I get specifically says "C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Symantec\NortonUtilities16\unins000.msg"  is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program.

It is still on my computer - I can run it.

Hi garbo,

Did the suggestions in my message 17 work??

Thanks.

Regards,

Hi Apostolos/

Afraid not, it says it can't find the file.  Also, in Program files, Norton Utilities is not there.  I am really confused.
