Hi debbie_ann:

The Norton Security Toolbar v2017.11.0.1 for Firefox works fine in my Firefox ESR v52.3.0 browser and it should work in FF v55.0.3 as well.

Mozilla will be introducing some changes in FF57 that will require addon developers to build FF browser extensions using a new technology called Web Extensions.  The Mozilla support article Firefox add-on technology is modernizing describes this new addon framework and states:

Note: Starting in Firefox 57, which will be released in November 2017, only add-ons built with this new technology will work in Firefox. These are indicated by the "Compatible with Firefox 57+" label on addons.mozilla.org (AMO).

The discussion in Brocktoon's thread Firefox 55 saying Norton Toolbar is 'Legacy' was about whether Norton browser extensions for Firefox like the Norton Identity Safe and Norton Security Toolbar will be redesigned before FF57 is released to ensure they are compatible with new Mozilla technologies like Web Extensions and multiprocessing.  I don't use Norton Identity Safe but I noticed that the new Norton Identity Safe v3.0.0.298 for Firefox released yesterday at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/norton-identity-safe/ now has a "Compatible with Firefox 57+" label, so Norton appears to be making progress as they prepare for changes coming in November with FF57.

Are you all running Firefox 55 successfully with the Norton Toolbar?  The forum post below seems to suggest that it won't be compatible until Firefox 57.  (or am I just confused?)

What does any of this have to do with Firefox?  Would appreciate if people would either stay on topic or move this chat session about acronyms to a PM.

Well that certainly makes more sense. Although that was before my time and we only recently get BBC.

Perhaps it could also be used to refer to a certain other person who regularly makes news headlines?

The original was funny ....

FF 55.0.2. The more FF beef up the browser. The more, my very slow Intel Atom Netbook, has crunching the numbers. Tried ESR, same thing. Like AdblockPlus Filters: had to gradually, limit the total number to 1. Luckily, the Norton Toolbar is resilient.

If you prefer to stay with 32-bit Firefox after the 64-bit migration, you can simply download and re-run the Firefox 32-bit installer from the Firefox platforms and languages download (link is external) page.

Even if the registry edit mentioned <here> doesn't prevent the initial migration after FF v56 is released in September 2017 it sounds like you'll still have a workaround to keep your 32-bit Firefox browser on your 64-bit OS.

Thanks

I tried creating the "Never" key, just for fun.

Hi bjm_:

I found some additional information in the 14-Aug-2017 official Mozilla blog entry 64-bit Firefox is the New Default on 64-bit Windows, which has the following advice for existing 32-bit Firefox users with a 64-bit OS:

  1. You can download Firefox now and reinstall, which will automatically install Firefox 64-bit; or
  2. You can wait. We intend to migrate the remaining 64-bit Windows users to a 64-bit version of Firefox with a future release. If you prefer to stay with 32-bit Firefox after the 64-bit migration, you can simply download and re-run the Firefox 32-bit installer from the Firefox platforms and languages download page.

Even if the registry edit mentioned <here> doesn't prevent the initial migration after FF v56 is released in September 2017 it sounds like you'll still have a workaround to keep your 32-bit Firefox browser on your 64-bit OS.

Hi bjm_:

At the moment, those registry tweaks are probably more relevant for beta testers who are already testing Firefox 56.0 Beta 3. [..]

Yes, that's my thinking too.

[..] I'd suggest waiting a bit closer to the 26-Sep-2017 release date for FF56.  By then Mozilla might have automated the whole migration process so eligible 64-bit users see a pop-up asking them if they'd like to opt out of the migration from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox.  [..]

Yes, hope for pop-up too.

[..] see the support article Important - Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista (link is external)) so the 32-bit "regular" and ESR offline installers should continue to be available for download long past September 2017. [..]

Ahh,  Thanks

Thanks

bjm_:

Hmm, so I should reg tweak now.  Or, stand-alone 32bit downloads will remain. Is that your understanding?

Hi bjm_:

At the moment, those registry tweaks are probably more relevant for beta testers who are already testing Firefox 56.0 Beta 3. I have a 32-bit OS so I haven't been following news about this planned migration, but I'd suggest waiting a bit closer to the 26-Sep-2017 release date for FF56.  By then Mozilla might have automated the whole migration process so eligible 64-bit users see a pop-up asking them if they'd like to opt out of the migration from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox.

As far as I know, there are no plans to discontinue support for Win 7 SP1 and higher 32-bit OSs (all XP and Vista support will be ending some time in the next year - see the support article Important - Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista) so the 32-bit "regular" and ESR offline installers should continue to be available for download long past September 2017.

Imacri,

Hmm, so I should reg tweak now.  Or, stand-alone Firefox 32bit downloads will remain upon Firefox 56 regular channel release.
Is that your understanding?
Does https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Win64#Migration_Opt-Out  apply to current Firefox 55.x regular channel.
