Firewall issues with Facebook

Norton firewall is blocking parts of facebook, was working fine forever then all of a sudden, facebook will only load partial page and will not load the menu/settings area at all. Don;t seem to have issues on other sites at all.

When disable smart firewall it will load and work fine. Even after turn it back on it will work fine for about ten mins and then back to issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It is now nearly 4 weeks since I installed the suggested rules updates and everything was working fine until today.  The exact same issue returns, will not load the Facebook feed.  Very frustrating.

So happy to have found others facing the same issue - but sad that we're all facing the same issue.  I also have the Comcast Norton version and just started experiencing this Facebook loading issues a few weeks ago.  Chrome is my primary browser but I've faced the same issue as well in Firefox and Edge.  I never even thought to make the connection to my Norton Firewall as it is not producing any blocking notifications when this happens.  The only way I even figured to look at Norton was when this started happening I opened the task manager and noticed my disk utilization bumping all the way up to 100% and sorting by the largest offenders - up came Norton.  I'm thinking memory leak perhaps but I'm at my wits end with this problem.  I haven't tried the updates to the Firewall that Norton posted - seems to be hit/miss for those of you that tried it.  Will keep trying but hope that Norton finds a resolution for us because it's really intolerable.

I tried the Firewall rules and it didn't help. I then disable IPV6 on my internet network and it also didn't help. The only thing that works is to disable Norton Smart Firewall.

It only affects Facebook.

Hi Illumination.  I'm having the same problem.  It seems to have started with the latest Norton update.  I can barely use Facebook on my computer and I can't use messenger at all.  I looked at my Norton history and I don't see it specifically blocking Facebook, but it seems to block all Windows inbound services about every minute of the day.  Do you think that this is the issue?

Well, while putting the rules in place a week ago appeared to have fixed the problem, it has not. Photos are again prevented from loading as you scroll down the page. Refreshing the page allows you to go further, once you start scrolling from the beginning again, but than I run into the same problem with the photos failing the load. I guess it is back to the Firefox browser with IPv6 disabled. frown

Hello

What programs have you installed or updated since Facebook last worked satisfactory? Yes, I know that Norton was one of those things that updated. The Firewall plays an important part in protecting your computer. By disabling it, you are opening up a door to let malware in. Facebook itself can be a dangerous place, but I do know you need FB for business and other needs.

Thanks

I've had Facebook and Norton for YEARS, and never had this problem until about 5-6 weeks ago.   Only way I can get Facebook to fully load, or upload pics to Facebook, is to disable the Norton Firewall.  I'm using Chrome and Windows 10, and have tried other browsers and other PCs with Norton... It is NOT an issue with Chrome, nor is it an issue with Facebook.  Something has changed with Norton Firewall that blocks Facebook.  I've called Norton and they have not fixed it as of yet.  Hope this gets fixed soon, as I am tired of having to disable the Norton Firewall every time I go on Facebook.

I also put the two rules in place. Facebook loads pages fine but still can't upload photos unless the smart firewall is turned off.  This is the same on Chrome, and IE. Changed the firewall IPv6 rule to also allow outgoing traffic to FB but no difference.

Norton Security Suite v22.9.1.12

Chrome v57.0.2987.133

The rules in place continue to work for me, except occasionally I will have some delay in photos loading. When that does happen, for me, refreshing the page will stop the delay.

I put the two rules in place and so far after 3 days have not had the issue any longer.

Make sure to follow the instructions and do all steps, I missed a part at first and it did not work.

Will continue to monitor and post back if have issue again.

I have the same problem this is my windows version:

Windows 10 pro

version 1607

build 14393.1066

Maybe it only happens on certain windows versions?

It is not limited to Windows 10 pro because I am using Windows 10 Home.

What it does appear to be limited to is IPv6 and possibly Comcast.

System type: 64-bit OS

Having the same problem (more-or-less). The more is that I have problems with Facebook regardless of Browser (Chrome-my default, IE, Firefox, AND Edge --- although the latter has the least problems), when I have the Norton Smart Firewall active. Temporary solution was to de-activate Norton Smart Firewall and to activate the Windows Defender firewall (which I'm not sure I trust, as I've never really looked into its ratings).

An additional "more", is that I have the same issue using the Windows 10 Facebook App as well.

The less is that I have do NOT have a problem on my laptop that is NEARLY the same in regards to software, etc.

The difference between the two (my desktop and laptop), is the desktop was recently (~3 weeks ago) updated with the "Creators" update for Windows 10 (I have the Pro edition). I had chosen to install this update because I was having some unrelated issues (that did get resolved with the update). This is likely NOT the issue with others reporting here, as the Windows Creators Update has NOT BEEN rolled out for general updating, and I think it only came out on April 11, 2017 which is AFTER some of the first reports above.

Long-story short. Like others (after a reboot) I reset Norton Smart Firewall to on ... and everything ran fine for a short period ... but after a few minutes the problem reappears.

Soon as I turn Norton Smart Firewall off, everything runs fine.

NO OTHER SITE or application seems to have similar problems.

Also note, since the problem seemed to be more severe on Chrome than on other browsers (but that is likely just because I use it the most ... and notice the problem more). I did a clean reinstall of Chrome (uninstall and not save  cookies, etc. then reinstall), when I thought the issue was just with Chrome --- since the reinstall I have not added any add-ins that might be an issue.

FINAL NOTE: I had NOTHING noted in the History for Firewall Activities under security to indicate what if anything in particular is being blocked.

ARGHHHHHH!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are aware about this issue and team working on it. Could you please add Facebook specific allow traffic rule posted here and let us know if you are still facing this issue?

I went back and tried everything again, entering the traffic rule as described. I have now given it a day and it does, so far, seemed to have fixed the issue.

For me, the issue continues to be fixed using the Facebook traffic rule.

I added the Facebook firewall rules but didn't help.

It works for a while then loads part of a page and hangs when changing pages.

Turning off Smart Firewall clears it then works fine.

There are reports in that thread that the firewall rule is only temporarily helping the issue.

Im curious as to what Norton is blocking in the background, whether it be a Facebook Website Plugin or ad/3rd party traffic. Either way, if it is a malicious action performed that Norton is blocking, one would not deem creating an allow rule "whitelisting Facebook" through the firewall  a solution.

Thanks for the update, @WNiles
