Firewall issues with Facebook

Thanks Sunil_GA! I added the firewall exceptions for Facebook this morning and it seems to be working like a charm.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are aware about this issue and team working on it. Could you please add Facebook specific allow traffic rule posted here and let us know if you are still facing this issue?

My guess is that there is something in the way that Facebook has implemented IPv6 that Norton's firewall doesn't agree with because when I switch off IPv6 everything is hunky-dory. I have yet to encounter this issue with any other website but Facebook is somewhat unique in the way that it serves up news feeds, messenger chats, ads, games, etc. There are a lot of requests to its own servers as well as to their ad partners. The interesting thing to note is that once Facebook makes a good connection, as long as I don't leave the session it never stops working. You would think that if Facebook and Norton had a problem getting along that the problem would come back intermittently even if it was successful at first.

I'm thinking that there is something specific that I'm doing with Facebook that is getting blocked by Norton. For example, I tried using Facebook's gaming console, GAMEROOM. I didn't like it and stopped using it, but that is when all this trouble started. How many of us tried Gameroom?

I have never even heard of gameroom? Nothing specific needs to be done. The problem exists for me simply by scrolling down the page.

Have not used gameroom and had the issue, I get it loading a basic page as well as just the settings menu

I have sent Norton several logs files etc for them to look into, per their request, but have not had any results back yet

I don't have problems on other sites that I can tell other than facebook and on all browsers..

I agree. We need to get more facts.

I also have this problem. I use Norton Suite through Comcast version 22.9.1.12. I have the issue with every browser I've tried: Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. As soon as I turn off Norton Firewall all three browsers start working without having to close and reopen the browser - I just refresh the Facebook page. I have not noticed an impact to any other site.

Only issue I see with this, is that I do not have this disabled and also do not have this issue, and have NS on two machines. Only a few of you do, so if it is IPv6 why is it not effecting more users?

Not all ISPs have implemented IPV6 yet. I know my current connection does not. It is being rolled out, but not here yet.

Test your connection here. http://test-ipv6.com/

This I understand, still, with as huge of a user base as Norton has, you would think more then 4 or 5 users would have this issue. I already knew before testing my ISP has IPV6 and it is enabled here on both machines with none of the issues others are having with websites, but I ran the test and a screenshot to show.

I don't know how big an issue this is, but it is not fair to say it is limited to 4 or 5 users. Most people have no idea this forum even exists or would even guess that Norton has anything to do with the problem. I just found out it had something to do with Norton by doing a Google search and happened to put in the right words to come up with this thread. I have NIS through Comcast. I have seen that some others who are also having this problem also have Comcast. I don't know if that limits it to those that have this issue. Questions: Is it limited to the combination of Comcast and NIS? And/or is the Comcast version any different than the commercial version?

The 4 or 5 users comment, was directed at just the users in the thread reporting this, if you look closer, there are a couple more then this, and most of them are new accounts where the user joined or finally posted somethin. With forums, most users do not create accounts but just follow silently from the background, I think you will find a lot more users do this and know of the forum then one would realize. That said...

Having Norton through Comcast, is one of the common Denominators we need to look at. Matter of fact, it would not hurt for the few that have this issue to list what browser, extensions, and version of Norton they are running, so we can figure out the rest of the common denominators. Those of us trying to help though, are not Norton Employees, and have limited access to features that could be used to narrow this down, example, I can not get a copy of Comcast Norton version to test.

I am using Norton Security Suite through Comcast/Xfinity, also labeled as Norton 360, on the icon. It is version 22.9.1.12. Xfinity is listed as the vendor name. As far as browser extensions, I have have tried it with the "safe mode" of Firefox and the issue still exists with IPv6.

As noted above, a possible solution is to use Firefox and disable the IPv6 setting. See the following for directions:

------------------

Firefox supports IPv6 by default, which may cause connection problems on certain systems. To disable IPv6 in Firefox:

 1. In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter.

The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I accept the risk! to continue to the about:config page.

In the Search field, type network.dns.disableIPv6.

In the list of preferences, double-click network.dns.disableIPv6 to set its value to true.

That I can't answer. Perhaps that is something Norton will have to figure out. Only thing I can tell is that for those who do have the problem, this seems to be a workaround. And personally, for now it saves me from ditching Norton.

Don't want to use Firefox and should not have to. Norton needs to address and fix this

Norton may or may not fix this. It is up to them to decide if they care enough to fix it or if they can even figure out what is causing it. It is up to us as to whether we want to continue using the product. For those that do, and don't want to wait for something that may not come in the near future, I was just providing a possible workaround to this annoying problem. Up to you or anyone else if they want to use it.

The point is to figure out what Norton is interfering with that causes a loss of some Facebook functionality.

This is exactly what I'm trying to accomplish here and so far this is what we have learned. You are the first person in this thread to mention another website issue besides facebook losing functionality. We can deduct that since facebook loads, but only partially, that obviously it is not a main URL blacklist issue, no logs are generated from those that have checked in the thread, in firewall history, there are no prompts from the webfilter, adding a ad blocker for one user in this thread cleared up the issue for them. I am running two machines on this network set up the same, with NS and using Google Chrome and am not experiencing this issue with any websites including Facebook.

From what I gather here, it is looking much like either a 3rd party site plugin or traffic more then likely Norton is hammering, why it is not being logged in any shape or form, and what exactly it is blocking are both good questions at this point.

It is not a 3rd party site plugin. I have tried Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. I tried Firefox with out any plugins. The problem continues. What may be one of the issues for Norton, as mentioned above, is handling Facebook and IPv6.

It appears that Norton is having trouble with IPV6 and Facebook. News stories wont load, or load very slowly. Turn off the firewall, and it all works great. Turn off IPV6 on the adapter, it also seems to work just fine. But I'd like to have the firewall on, use facebook and have IPV6 on my computer. Any chance on fixing this probelm?
