Full idle scan works for me. I just looked in my Scan History. Do you have your pc go into Hibernation mode? I always shut that off. Then I set ,my screensaver for 10 minutes and shut my monitor off after 4 hours and hard drivers after 5 hours.

No Hibernation mode.  I don't have a screensaver running, and I don't shut off my monitor or hard drive.  That's the way I've always had my computer set up.  The last full idle time scan ran with my computer set up this way.

Well usually idle is after the screensaver kicks on. When a screensaver kicks in thats tell Norton that nothing is going on.

I'll give that a try.  I'll let a screensaver run and see if the full idle time scan starts.

Hi Golfjunky

If you schedule a full system scan, the idle time scan will not run. If your PC is off when the scheduled scan is set to run, it wont run again until next scheduled.

Why don't you test this by scheduling the next scan for, say, the next hour, and see if it runs?

Let us know.

PS Activation of idle time scans has nothing to do with the screen saver becoming active.

He never said he scheduled a scan. But how is Norton suppose to know your on idle. Mine works fine with my screen saver on so that’s why I suggested he do the same. There is no documentation stating otherwise.

Hi Dieselman743

I was referring to this "I have Idle Time Scan set to Weekly..", I misunderstood this for Golfjunky as having scheduled his scans for weekly.

NIS09 counts down it's own idle time, whether your screen saver is set to ten minutes or ten hours, NIS09 idle time will kick in as soon as your PC meets the idle time requirements, set by default as ten minutes, or whichever you choose.

11 days and counting.   My computer sat idle all day today, from 10 AM to 5 PM.  This is the first time I've touched it since startup.  No full idle time scan.

I don't have a full system scan scheduled.  I had the screensaver running. I didn't think the screensaver running would make a difference, since there wasn't one running the last time a full idle time scan ran.  Two quick idle time scans ran today.  One in the AM, one in the PM.

I'm going to move the idle time scan from 10 minutes, to 1 minute to see if that makes a difference.  I kind of doubt it though.  I don't know why if nothing has changed, a full idle time scan won't run again.

Do you have any other programs that run tasks in the back round?

No.      I'm thinking maybe I need to do a uninstall/reinstall.

The full scan ran on my computer yesterday, almost exactly a week after installation.

I have another question though: in the log it says that there were 1.954 trusted files, but that it skipped 10.912 files.

Which files and why did it skip? Were these the files that were accesed often and already scanned in the same session, or in the last few days, or is there another explanation?

Golfjunky, you should not need to reinstall.

First we need to make sure you did not schedule a regular full system scan via settings->manage scans->configure->schedule. This would switch off the idle scan. Please confirm.

Then we need to know if your performance counters are working properly. Click on "CPU Usage" on the main UI and see if you have blue CPU spikes in the CPU monitor area. Please confirm that you see these spikes.

Maximize the CPU monitor dialog and change the Idle Timeout to 1 minute. This will allow us to check quickly if it is working.

If you do not move your mouse or use your keyboard then you should see the blue progress bar filling up within one minute. Once full, it should say "your computer is currently in an idle state" under the progress bar.  There is a job named "idle full system scan" at the bottom on the job list in the CPU UI. This one should eventually change its state to "running" once you are in idle status. Let us know what you see there.

Hi jensm.  Thanks for helping me out with this.

I don't have have a regular full system scan scheduled.

I went into CPU Usage, and there is CPU spikes in the CPU monitor area.  I changed the Timeout to 1 minute.  The progress bar moved to the right, and the "your computer is currently in an idle state" appeared.   Nothing happened with the "idle full system scan" job at the bottom. I waited a few minutes, but still nothing.  It just showed, Last Run=Never,  Duration=blank,  Ran During Idle=No,  Status=Not Run.

I just got off the phone with tech support, and she couldn’t figure out what was wrong either.  She proposed that I set Idle Time to 30 minutes, and leave the computer sit idle for a few hours.  I can’t see how that would do anything.

Golfjunky,

Have you ever toggled the "Idle Time Scan" drop down under Settings / Computer Settings / Computer Scans ?  That is, have you change it from weekly to something else (monthly, off, etc), then back to weekly?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi MikO.

No, I never changed the setting from weekly to anything else.

Just an update.  I did an uninstall/reinstall of NIS  2009 on 10/1/08.  It is now been 7 days, and no full system idle time scan has run.  Someone at DSLreports security forum reports he had three full system idle time scans run in one day.  What the hell is going on?  This really is beginning to piss me off.

For me it runs about every 7-10 days. Are you looking in your History or going by the CPU chart? In my history it ran a Full Idle scan on 9-29 then on 10-7. I have a manual full scan in between for nyself cause its what I do. From what I gather NIS knows when a full scan is needed.

I'm looking in History>Scan Results.
