Hi Andrew, This issue may be occuring due to issues with permissions on your destination USB drive. Try verifying the user permissions using below steps:

1. Click the Start buttun and then click Computer or My Computer.

2. Browse to the destination drive or folder used by Norton Ghost to save the backups.

3. Right-click on the destination drive, and then click Properties.

4. On the Security tab, click Advanced.

5. On the Permissions tab, under Permission entries, check if Local/domain administrator group, Domain user account, and local SYSTEM are listed. If not listed, click Add, and then insert the group/account to the list.

6. Click Edit, and then modify the group or account which does not have full control.

7. Click the checkbox for Full Control under Allow.

8. Click OK.

9. Do one of the following: For Windows Vista: Enable the option Include inheritable permissions from the object's parent. For Windows XP: Enable the following two options: -Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include with entries explicitly defined here. -Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries show here that apply to child objects.

10. Click OK.

Hello Prasad,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried what you suggested but it made no difference.

I should have mentioned that I have 2 jobs running.

My Computer Backup and My Documents Backup.

The My Documents Backup works with no problems everyday.

The My Computer backup worked for about 10 days with no problems.

Now the My Computer backup starts to create a recovery point.

It runs for about 30 seconds then comes up with the message in initial posting.

Same external drive, nothing changed that I know of.

Do you have any other ideas???

 Thanks  Andrew

Try running chkdsk /r on the source and destination drives.  Then defrag your source drive.  The fact that it takes several days before this happens points to something environmental that occurs with usage.

I have exactly the same situation. The only way to resolve the issue is to reboot. This happens about once a week during incremental backup of my C: drive.

Here is the log entry:

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: System Disk C:. Error E0BB0083: Unable to create incremental image. Error E0BB0061: Win32/Win64 API [WindowsComputer::MakeSnapVolumeWriteable]  DeviceIoControl( FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME, \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 ) failed. Error EBAB03F1: Access is denied.
Details: 0xE0BB0083

What steps have you tried?

I have followed your recommendations and am now in the process of defragging my external backup drive. Following that, I will do the chkdsk /r and see if either of these helps.

Why would disk fragmentation cause a problem? I would expect backup software to work correctly, even if my hard drive was fragmented to the maximum degree possible. Assuming the file system is consistent (which chkdsk should verify/fix).

Erik,

Completed all of your suggestions and no problem until today. C: drive was scheduled to run at 1:00 PM, backup of D:\ (myfiles) operated correctly at 4:00 PM. I noticed a needs attention on the icon tray, so I checked and the C: backup had not run. No error was listed at 1:00 PM, in fact no messages for that time at all in the log file. And in the status there was just a blank in the cell, no error icon.

I manually then ran the backup from the Ghost main menu and once again got this error message.

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: System Disk C:. Error E0BB0083: Unable to create incremental image. Error E0BB0061: Win32/Win64 API [WindowsComputer::MakeSnapVolumeWriteable]  DeviceIoControl( FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME, \\?\SymantecSnapshot0 ) failed. Error EBAB03F1: Access is denied.

Seems like the error occurs just about every other day.

Ed

I have been having a similar problem on and off for the past month or so. As a systems engineer and developer,
I've checked everything. Permissions are fine. First I was backing up to a NAS drive (with all permissions set
and using a UNC path), then to an external USB 2.0 drive. No difference. Every other day, I get the same warning
(below).

Running Vista SP1 with UAC flat out disabled. I'm an admin on the machine, machine does not go into sleep mode etc
Each of these volumes (below) is a 500GB high performance Seagate ST drive.
A few weeks ago, I even uninstalled NG14, scrubbed all entries completely from my system and registry and
re-installed. Sometimes it will work if I run missed backups manually. At other times I have to reboot first in
order to get it to work.

After getting it again today (below) and seeing the warning via email notification, I decided to do some research.
The first thread on Google is this one.

For a program that is supposed to give me peace of mind, this is a very **serious** problem that needs to be
resolved. I don't remember having this problem with NG12 at all.

same problem for me.

Ghost 14 ran fine for a week or so then the problem as previously described started.

I run in Vista Ultimate x64 and find that the only way to sort it out is to delete the backup schedule and the previous backups and then start a new schedule.

This will run for maybe one or two more incrementals then the problem starts again.

Plenty of space on the hard drive NTFS 350gb

The only other thing I have noticed is that Ghost 10 running on XP using the same discs has no problems

Have tried all the fixes that I have read but no Joy  ...... it must be a Ghost 14 problem

Could you try running LiveUpdate to check for updates?  Make sure that Ghost is listed within the list of updates being looked for.

If not, try running Process Explorer and filter out by VProSvc and paste that info in a reply.

There appears to be another issue with the material you are pasting.  Difficult for me to define without looking over your shoulder.  I just did a test post with 18781 characters, and had no problems.  If you could take screen shots of the problem and contact me via PM I would be happy to sort it out.

When posting logs try using the 'insert code' tool on the editing toolbar .

Hi Erik,

yes have ran Liveupdate and there are no updates to install.

I have tried every which way to ascertain the problem but I am completely baffled

other suggestions would be appreciated.

as I type ghost has start to run an incremental backup and seems to be OK.

But as this is only the first since I had to delete and replace with a new schedule I will not hold my breath

Message Edited by jjf1312 on 07-21-2008 09:07 AM

LiveUpdate reports no updates available. In fact, every time you re-install, it will run, check for updates, apply them, reboot.

It is highly unlikely that there is an update to fix this problem unless of course you guys are in fact aware that this problem *does* exist and have thus created a patch for it, hence the LiveUpdate requirement. Other than that, please quit wasting our time with these pointless "try this, try that" messages. Thats just the same rehashed script we get from chat, from the non-English (mostly) speaking help folks etc. Its NOT helping.

I mean seriously, how many times do we have to install, re-install and do that song and dance? And to think I gave up Acronis TrueImage for this. Next stop, Storage Protect Desktop, because this is ridiculous.

btw, I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1 32-Bit on a 2GB Intel Core2Duo E6600 machine.

Hear,Hear,   I assume your message is aimed at Norton.

I have included all the error messages so somebody at Norton must know what they mean.

So lets have an intelligent reply from Norton.
