How do you disable startup (but NOT uninstall)?

Also, uninstalling NIS with the NRT corrupted my registry. I'm currently working with Windows 7 forum at microsoft to resolve that. At least two other people had the exact same problem. I won't go into details here because it is a long explanation.

Thanks

Please send me the details of the registry corruption via a PM.  You can do so by clicking on my name next to this post and then clicking on the "Send this user a Private Message".  Thanks.

The explanation is very long so I'm including the link to that threat of windows 7 forum. I still have not recieved a reply to my second question so I hope someone here can help me know what to do for sure.

Just wanted to say that the answer, at least most of it, is at the link to Spewhole's post.  Also, my name there is misha38

Thanks

meikol,

Regarding your Microsoft thread, you may want to look at this thread about strange sounds after boot up...

Thanks for your reply

I don't think that's my problem though. Did you go to the microsoft link? The problem spewhole is exactly like mine. I got the same sound and same yellow warning signs in device manager and also the same message properties saying my registry had been damaged. Also, like him it happened right after I used the NRT to uninstall.

I have replied to you in a PM (thanks for answering my request) but to bring this out here, you can follow the same proceedures that were done in the Win7 board.  Right clicking on the items with the yellow warnings and uninstalling them and then asking Windows (in Device Manager) to rescan for any new hardware, will fix you registry problems.  This is a known issue and has been correct in the most recent builds of the latest Norton product and the NRT.

Thank you dbrisendine

I went ahead and did as suggested in windows forum and it solved the problem. I just downloaded the NRT about a week ago as recommended by a Norton employee and that one caused the problem. Is there even a newer one? If so where do I get it just incase I need it again?

Thanks

P.S.

I read in another thread here that you have to do a clean boot to stop NIS to install a printer. Is that correct? And does a clean boot shut off NIS completely?

Also, I wasn't able to do a system restore because it said NIS was in use so I had to uninstall it. (That's when I had the problem with the NRT) I read on here somewhere as well that you need to turn off "Product Tamper Protection" to do it. Is that correct?  Also a thought just occured to me as I was writing this. Will turning off PTP then allow you  to completely disable NIS with msconfig?

Thanks alot for helping out

Michael

Hello Super Spam Squasher

NIS is Norton Internet Security.

My NRT was downloaded on 3-24. So I missed it by only two days? And you're sure the one on there right now is correct?

P.S.

I just checked my NRT file and it is 834kb. That means it's the new one doesn't it?

Hello bjm_

Norton Security Suite is the free security program that Comcast is giving out to their subscribers. It's similar to N360, but it has a different backup program. It there are any threads about that program, you will find them in Other Product section of the Forum.  The program is actually called Comcast Norton Security Suite. They get the download from the Comcast site, but ask for support in the Norton Forum also. Hope this explains it to you bjm_

@ meikol

Just a minor FYI to offset my recent senior moment.

SuperSpamSquasher is not my user name. SuperSpamSquasher is a Community ranking.

Your user name " meikol" is displayed above your ranking " Contributor ".

My user name " bjm_ " is displayed above my ranking.

In any thread there may be multiple users with the same ranking....if you wish to reply to a named user.

The user's name may be helpful.

The Comcast Norton Security Suite NRT is also 835kb so IDK ...use the above link for NIS

& Hopefully you will never need to use the NRT.
