Last weekend I upgraded from Norton 360 V4.0 to V5.0.
I later tried to use Corel Photo Album but it wouldn't launch. I noticed that a Process had been started but nothing was happening. I remembered getting the same issue when I originally updated to Norton 360 V3.0 some time ago. The link to the fix still exists here: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090319114809EN. I still had the download from before but this does not run with V5.0. I tried to download the patch again but this didn't work either.
I have raised a call with the support team (503905688) and they have tried a few Norton 360 configuration changes but I was reluctant to go down the uninstall/reinstall path as this seems to be a repeat of a previously recognised bug that required a patch to fix. The support analysts could not say when or even whether a fix would be released and it was difficult to get them to acknowledge that it could be a problem with Norton.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with either Corel products or any other program failing to start after installing Norton 360 V5.0? if so, have you found a way round it.
If no way round, does anyone know whether and when a patch might be released for this problem occurring with V5.0?
I seem to have stumbled upon a solution to this problem. My OS is Windows XP. I have a shortcut that I use to access Corel Photo Album. If I set the Compatibility Mode to run in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 then it seems to run quite happily. By switching Compatibility Mode on or off I can see that it runs successfully or not.
I have also tried other Compatibility Mode settings with the following results:
Windows NT - also seems to work fine.
Windows 98 / Windows ME - works OK (launches) but does not kill the process when exiting and hence will not re-open as it detects it is already running.
Windows 95 - same results as for Windows 98 / ME.
I have kept the Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and will use it like this until I hear of a proper fix.
Just posted to your problem to explain how. Basically, create a shortcut and then in the Properties of the shortcut under the Compatibilty Mode choose Windows 2000.
Sorry to hear that. Suggest you try other options, such as Windows NT. If that doesn't work then I'm out of ideas I'm afraid. Just hope Norton release a patch soon. Maybe the fact that we've both posted the same issue will alert them that it is affecting many users.

Good luck.
In general you can do this more directly if you locate in WIndows Explorer (the file manager) the file that starts opening the installed application -- say Corel.exe in this case -- right mouse click on it, select Properties and there's a check box for selecting Use Compatibility Mode and a drop list of the versions of Windows to select from.
When there's a problem it may be worthwhile selecting on that same TAB [X] Run as Administrator if that is shown as an option. I use Run as Administrator when installing utilities and applications that I trust in VISTA and Windows 7 where it is an option in the Context Menu (what you get when you right mouse click on a file), So it may not apply if you are in XP .....
Re how to update the Compatibility Mode, yes of course. I listed the method I used as I run most of my applications from a Windows Toolbar with all the shortcuts on it and I had updated the Properties via that shortcut. You are absolutely right though.
I have no option in XP to run as Administrator as far as I can see, but I am not an expert so cannot be sure.
Curiously, I tried logging on as a different user (ours is a family desktop), and tried to run Corel Photo Album from there with precisely the same setting, but it would not work. I tried again with yet another user and again no joy. So the only account this runs from is my own. At the moment I have no idea why this should be. All the accounts are set with Administrator rights, so it's not that.
thanks, but there is no CMD file in system 32, so I guess this does not apply to photo album
I did receive this from Corel. tried it and it did not work:
Thank you for your e-mail. This problem can often be attributed to the user account being used to install the product. Startup items or services associated with the profile can conflict with the installation process, generating errors which prevent the install from completing successfully. Create a new administrative profile on the system, then attempt to launch using the newly created account.
Logon to the newly created administrator account and from there, launch the software.
Creating a new account should not affect your existing account. This is another way to troubleshoot a program that is not working on your existing account. If the software works in the new account, it means that there's a conflict between the software and your existing account. The problem lies within your old profile that triggers the software to be intermittent.

The CMD file is part of Windows not of Corel Photo Album ....
Do you have the system set to show hidden system files? The default setting in Windows is to hide these files to try to avoid innocent damage so you need to set it to on.
Could you please say what version of Windows you are using and we can guide you further but briefly you can either set WIndows Explorer to show these:
But the easy way if you are in Windows 7 is to click on start and type cmd.exe in the search box and hit ENTER.
That should bring up cmd.exe at the top; Right mouse click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administratior and that should bring up the screen showing <drive>\Windows\system32 and then you can follow the instructions in the Norton document where it starts CD ......
In XP Click on Start / Programs / Accessories [ / System Tools ]> Command Prompt and right mouse click on that last and select Run as Administrator and then start with the CD from the instructions.
NOTE the [ / System Tools]> is in [ ] bcause I'm not in XP at the moment and I'm not sure if Command Prompt shows directly under Accessories, as it does in WIN 7, or if it is under System Tools.
Please let us know what version of Windows you have including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit ....
This solution has worked for me and I can now run Corel Photo Album without needing to use Compatibility Mode and from all user accounts.
I see that the instructions state that this does disable some Norton 360 features. Should I be worried about this? If I want to re-enable these features, even temporarily, what command would I use to register the dll again?
Also, if a permanent fix is eventually released is there any way I can be alerted to the fact?
Some time open Windows Explorer, the file manager, hit ALT if you don't see the menu bar and then click on Tools / Folder Options / View
I like to uncheck Hide Extensions so that you do see .exe .ini .doc .txt etc after file names so as not to confuse them and also to reveal the malware use of multiple extensions to hide an exe file.
Because I know to be very very cautious I uncheck the Hide Protected System FIles so that they can be seen
And I tell it to show hidden folders .... drives although sometimes those last two can be overkill and be a nuisance; but when troubleshooting it can be useful to not have them hidden.
I'll let someone else help you with any consquences of the fix etc.
