I have 3 devices

I have 3 devices, desktops, laptops, tablets, and phones that I protect w/ Norton. Every year I buy a discounted 5-device license. However, I’ve never found an easy way to update the license on all the devices w/o going to each one and entering the key.

Hello @James_Jackson
That is the expected workflow when moving to a new, separate license key purchased outside of Norton’s auto-renewal system.

The reason you have to visit each device individually is because the security framework requires a per-device validation of the new license key to prevent piracy and ensure compliance with regional licensing laws.

EDIT: see @peterweb reply here

Norton does not provide a “global” button within the main online portal to push a new license key to every installed device simultaneously.

The process of manually entering the product key is required for a few security and technical reasons:

  1. Direct Communication: The Norton software on each local device needs to communicate directly with the Norton activation servers using the specific product key to register its unique machine ID and validate the new subscription terms.
  2. User Consent/Verification: Requiring a manual input step on each device helps ensure the owner is physically present and authorizing the change on that specific endpoint.

The manual update is primarily required for software piracy prevention, regional compliance, and to establish a specific, verified link between the physical device and the new license terms.

~ more on why this manual process is necessary:

Security and Anti-Piracy Measures

  • Software Authenticity: The product key acts as a unique authentication code, verifying that the software installed on a particular machine is a genuine, legitimately purchased copy, not a pirated one.
  • License Validation: Manually entering the key forces the local Norton application to establish direct communication with Norton’s activation servers. During this handshake, the server registers the unique hardware ID of that specific device against that single license seat.
  • Per-Device Tracking: This process allows Norton to enforce the license agreement’s limit (e.g., a 3-device plan). Without this device-specific validation, a single key could potentially be shared and used on dozens of machines illegally.

Regional & Legal Compliance

  • Geo-Locking & Pricing: Software pricing, features, and sales taxes vary significantly by country due to local economic conditions and regulations. Product keys are often “geo-locked” to a specific region. The manual activation process verifies that the device’s location matches the product key’s intended region, preventing users from exploiting price differences between markets.
  • Feature Restrictions: In some regions (e.g., Norton Secure VPN is not available in India due to local laws), certain software features are disabled. The local activation ensures the correct feature set is applied based on the key’s region.

Technical Infrastructure Limitations

  • Local Application Control: The Norton web portal is designed primarily for account management (billing, subscription status, sending download links), not for deep local application control of every device. Pushing a new license key to an already installed, active application across different operating systems (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS) involves complex technical interactions that are more reliably handled by an action initiated within the local app itself.
  • User Authorization: Requiring the user to open the application and enter the key ensures the actual owner is present and consenting to the license change on that specific device, which adds a layer of control and security.

The lack of a “global update” button is essentially a design choice that prioritizes strict license enforcement and compliance over convenience.

Entering a new key is easily done on the Windows Norton UI. But where is the same facility on the Android UI?

Hello @xjoex

For Android and iOS devices, Norton relies on synchronizing the app with your online account rather than entering a key manually in the app interface. The standard process is to use the web portal to register the key and then sign into your account from the app.

Activate or renew your Norton 360 subscription for your mobile device

Updating the License on the Android UI
Since you have already registered the new key to your account via the PC, the Android app should ideally pick it up automatically. If it doesn’t, here is how to force it:

Method 1: The “Sign In” Sync (Easiest)
The key is already on your account. You just need the app to re-sync its status.

  1. Open the Norton 360 app on your Android device.
  2. Look for any alerts regarding your subscription expiring or being unprotected. Tap on these alerts if they appear.
  3. If no alerts are present, you may need to force a re-authentication. Some users report success by clearing the app cache/data (Note: This might reset some in-app settings).
  4. Launch the app again and tap Sign In to log into your Norton Account using the same credentials you used to register the new key on the PC.
  5. The app should then retrieve the new, active 5-device subscription details automatically.

Method 2: The “Redeem a Subscription” Menu (If available)
Some recent versions of the Norton 360 app have added a “Redeem” option, but this is often for a partner code, not a full 25-character key. You can check for it:

  1. Open the Norton 360 app.
  2. Tap the hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
  3. Look for an option like Renew or Redeem a subscription.
  4. If you find it, you may see an option to Enter a Product Key there.

The Recommended Alternative: Use the Web Portal Link
As Norton documentation suggests, the most reliable way to activate mobile devices without manual key entry on the phone screen is via the download link method:

  1. On your PC, go to the My Norton portal.
  2. Select your new subscription, click Download.
  3. Choose Send Download Link and send the link to your tablet or phone.
  4. Open that link on the mobile device and follow the installation prompts. This ensures the correct, pre-activated software is installed.

To force the Norton Android app to retrieve the new license information from your account, you can clear its application data through the Android OS settings.

Disclaimer: Clearing app data will log you out of the app and may reset some minor in-app settings (like notification preferences), but it will not delete the core Norton protection features or put your device at risk.

Here is how to do the “clear app data” method on most modern Android devices:

How to Force a Fresh Sign-In on Android

  1. Open Settings: Navigate to your Android device’s main Settings app.
  2. Go to Apps: Scroll down and tap on Apps (sometimes labeled Apps & notifications, Applications, or Apps Manager).
  3. Find Norton 360: You may need to tap “See all apps” or use the search bar within Settings to find the Norton 360 application in the list. Tap on it.
  4. Storage Settings: Tap on Storage & cache (or simply Storage).
  5. Clear Data: Tap Clear Storage (or Clear Data). You may need to confirm this action in a pop-up dialog box (e.g., “Delete app data?”).
  6. Close Settings: Exit the Settings application.
  7. Re-Open Norton 360: Open the Norton 360 app again from your home screen or app drawer.
  8. Sign In: The app will launch as if it were brand new. Tap Sign In and enter your Norton account credentials.

Once you sign in, the app communicates with the Norton servers, pulls down your account details, recognizes the new 5-device license you purchased, and updates the subscription expiry date automatically.

This should update the license status on your Android devices without you having to type the key manually.

What you can do to avoid having to go to each device to update the product key is contact Norton Support and ask them to add the time from the new key to your existing subscription.

If using the chat function, as soon as you can enter any information, enter “agent please” to get connected to a human.

Good suggestions for people to try when they are ready to input a new key from @bjm and @peterweb.
