Idle auto full system scan----system works standard 12

I have System Works 12 Standard since just before New Year’s Day. Every thing was working fine. My last Idle auto full system scan ran on Mar. 12. I waited a while after the 19th when the next scan should have run. I then started to email Symantec support to try and get some help with this matter. Various things were suggested and then I was told that a uninstall and reinstall will fix the problem. The quick idle scans have been running ok. Before the uninstall and reinstall, I discovered I had a problem rebooting my computer after 1 AM. I found out that I had a Cmos battery problem and that needed to be replaced. My son had been starting up my computer in the mornings for a few days by removing and putting back the cmos battery. That problem has been fixed. We then uninstalled and reinstalled System Works again from a link that was provided by the email tech. We downloaded the file he said from the link he gave us and I noticed that the link was for Norton’s Internet Security, but I have System Works 12. So we installed my System Works from the CD which I had since I purchased it with a cd. It was reinstalled on March 29th. I was anxious for a full scan since one hadn’t run since the 12th of March, so I ran a manual one. I was hoping that a idle automatic full system scan would run 7 days after March 29th. I ran a manual full scan on April 3rd and a custom scan on April 5th. After I ran the full scan, I found out that would delay the idle auto full system scan for another 7 days. I don’t know if a custom scan will delay it once again. So far every thing is working, but still no Idle automatic full system scan. The setting is turned on for Idle scans on a weekly basis. The quick idle scans are occurring. The computer is idle at nights and it had been running fine until March 19th, when it didn’t run. My cd for the program has the older version on it and with all the updates we did, it should be all updated to the newer 134 I believe the number is. I’m not very computer literate and my son would have to do any fixings. I really would like to have my Idle full system scans back again. I don’t want to turn off the idle scans and schedule the scans and i have never scheduled them with this version of System Works either. Can any one help me please.?

I am using Windows xp pro sp 3 and IE 7. It is NSW 12.0.1 which is the standard edition. The Antivirus part is 16.5.0.134.

The cmos battery problem was fixed before the uninstall and reinstall of Norton's System Works. The time was corrected as soon as my son replaced the battery and a few days before the install. I don't have the reboot problem that I had before which may have accounted for the idle full system scan not to have worked like it should have before we replaced the battery. The times are ok since System Works was reinstalled on March 29th.

Many thanks for filling in the gaps ....

So really what you want to know is whether idle scan is running as it should be?

I don't know much about it but I'm fairly sure I've seen some explanations here (more precisely in the Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus Forum here) and I can remember an explanation recently from one of the Norton Staff -- names in red -- from which it seems that how it actually runs is more complicated than one might suppose.

Firstly I'm going to ask one of the moderators here to move your messages over into the NIS/NAV forum where you will get more contact with those concerned with those programs since strictly what you are asking about is not a Norton SystemWorks question that would be dealt with here in Other Products.

You won't lose sight of it since after the move a message is left here with a link to the new location.

Secondly I would expect that others can help you more than I can but I'll keep an eye on the messages.

Thank you for moving my problem to the correct or better section of the forum. I hope someone can help me. The problem is that it hasn’t run an Idle full system scan since the reinstall on March 29th. I did run a “scan now” on April 3rd and a custom scan on April 5th. The idle quick scans are running every time the virus definitions update I have noticed. These weekly idle full system scans were running every week until March 19th when it didn’t run as it should have. I’m not sure just when the 134 version came out for the Antivirus part, so maybe something went wrong when the program updated to the 134?  Would that scan now and the custom scan have postponed the 7 day period of the first scan? I am hoping that the first scan will run tonight, but I have been hoping that since a week after March 29th. I hope that there is an easy way to fix this program so that it resumes doing the weekly idle full scan like it used to do for about 2 1/2 months. I don’t want to have to schedule the scans. I want the auto idle scans to work again like they did with the original install of Norton’s System Works 12 Standard edition. When I reinstalled, I had to use my cd which had the previous version on it since the Symantec email tech gave me a link that ended up being Norton’s Internet Security and not the current System Works… I’m a long time user of System Works standard editions.

Hi

Here is an update to my problem. Another night has gone by and still no idle full system scan has run since the reinstall. I have noticed also that it used to do a quick idle scan around 4-5 AM. That hasn't been done either for the last 2 nights. Is there any help out there for me please.? The last Idle quick scan was done last night around 7:36 PM and none since then. My computer is on 24/7 and it had plenty of idle time to do this idle weekly scan. Ive been using Symantec System Works and have always had a weekly scan done. Now that it isn't running like it should, it's really scaring me.:( Please help. Thank you.

Hi again

I just noticed that the 134 patch or version came out on March 18th. My next Idle full system scan was supposed to have run on the 19th of March. Could this update have messed up my Idle full system scan schedule or something.? It seems like I haven't had a idle full system scan since this 134 version came out. Is anyone else having this problem besides me? Thank you.

Please hang on – I’ve asked for help …

When you reinstalled NSW did you disable the NAV part of the standard edition.  If not, it will cause a conflict.  NIS2009 is more compatible with NSW Basic Edition because there is no duplication.

Hi

System Works was uninstalled using the tool that the Symantec email tech support had said to use. My son did the actual work, but as far as I know, it was all uninstalled. We had a lot of updates to do once the reinstall was done, so I would say that the Antivirus part was uninstalled also especially since the reinstall showed that the older version had been installed. It was reinstalled the same way as the original System Works had been installed.

Hi

I am not trying to install Norton Internet Security together with Norton System works 12 standard. What I am trying to do is to get the Idle full system scan to work again in System Works 12 standard edtion. I am not using Norton Internet Security at all and never have. This is a problem with system works and the antivirus part that is included with system works 12. I guess it's actually a problem with the antivirus part that comes with system works 12. I was moved into this forum although my problem doesn't involve Norton Internet security. Thank you.

I asked for that  because NSW Standard uses Norton AntiVirus and that is dealt with here alongside NIS.

Sorry if that was not clear to others.

Hi

I think my son may be coming over tonight after work and perhaps he will try to uninstall and reinstall again. Even though I have the cd that came with System Works 12, maybe he can try installing it from a link in Symantec directly so maybe it can get installed with the latest Antivirus part without first having to install the older version. Now I am going to be a nervous wreck waiting for another week to go by to see if the Idle system full scan will work. So far, I'm not having too much luck with the email tech support. In fact, it's been a week since I heard from them even. I wish there was another person who uses system works 12 standard who might have this same problem. Am I the only one who is having this idle system not running since version 134 came out? I'm not sure if my son will come tonight after work. How can I tell if all the parts of the antivirus part updated like it should have so that the idle full scans will work? I'm a senior citizen here who needs my son to do this sort of stuff for me, but he doesn't live here and does work too. The program was working so great for like 2 1/2 months too, but now problems with it for a month.:(

Your son could download the trial versions of Norton SystemWorks and of Norton AntiVIrus 2009 and get the latest downloads that way although last time I looked the NSW download was a bit confusing.

Probably best to install NAV2009 first and then to start the install of NSW but select Custom Install rather than the Express (or descriptions to that effect) although I think that even the normal install of NSW gives you the choice of not installing Norton AntiVIrus.

If you are worried about being protected then I see no reason to base that on not having had an idle scan.

If your PC was not infected before then you don't need an idle scan since the arrival of malware would be detected by the normal activity of Norton AntiVirus; if your computer is infected then you need to run a full scan from the Scan Now control.

Obviously you want to know that idle scan is working as it should but it's not something to lose sleep over.

At least that is how I see it.

Hi

My son just finished uninstalling system works 12 standard first by using add/remove and then using the latest removal tool for system works 12 and used that twice with the necessary reboots. That removal tool then brings you to the symantec site to download system works 12 standard. We then installed from that download rather than using my cd for system works. It installed an older version I guess and then it went directly to the newer version. I am hoping now that it will all work ok. I guess I have to wait now a week to see if the idle full system scan will work like it used to work before. Don't have to get a separate version of antiversion as that is part of system works 12 standard. It is a 2 part installation actually. First you install the system works part and then install the antivirus part that comes with it. I'm not sure if it is exactly the same antivirus program as if you had just bought antivirus alone. If we had done the trial versions, I don't know if my key would have worked when the trial would have been over.  Any way system works 12 standard has been reinstalled again and I am just hoping that it will work this time the way it should work.

I just hope that all is working ok now cause I don't think my son will want to install this again so soon even though the install went ok I think. I did think though when the removal tool brought us to the site, that it would have downloaded the newest system works with the newest antivirus part already there and not an older version first. That would have saved some downloading of additional files and a few reboots.

I'm glad all went well.

The Norton AntiVirus in NSW Standard/Premier is the same as the freestanding version which is why they install separately.

I'm interested that removing NSW with the Norton Removal Tool ended up by sending you off to download it again. I've not heard of that before with other applications nor has it happened with NIS or NAV where I have done it.

Hi

I went to the Symantec site and downloaded the removal tool for system works 12. I saw that the instructions had been updated a few days ago, so maybe this is something new. It installed first the original version of system works 12 standard which I think was even older than the one on my cd. The last time we reinstalled, we used my cd which installed the previous version of the antivirus part and then it proceeded to install the current 134 version. I think, but not sure, that is was an earlier version than my cd, but the updates from live update did bring me to the newest version rather quickly. I think we had less updates to do this time than 2 weeks ago when we did it with the cd. I think this install went from that old version number directly to the 134 one. The intrusion engine that installed was the one from 082608 and then it went to the latest one 040809 skipping all the ones inbetween. When we used the cd, it didn't do that. The removal tool that we downloaded didn't do that the last time, however, that link that time was sent in an email from Symantec email support along with an install link for the supposedly new system works 12 standard. After I downloaded that file 2 weeks ago, I noticed the link was for Norton Internet Security and not for System Works which was why I used my cd to reinstall it that time. I don't know if the link he sent me led to the wrong program or if he sent me the link for the wrong program.

Any way, I downloaded my own removal tool from the Symantec site that said it was for system works 12 and that's what it did this time. Maybe it's a new feature of the removal tool for those who want to reinstall it again. You click on the program that you want to install I believe was the page that it brought you to, either that or to the download page for system works 12 itself. Sorry, I can't remember now, but I do know it brought me to the area where we downloaded the program. How recently have you had to use that Norton removal tool?

I guess though I won't know for another week if this reinstall fixed the problem of not having the idle full system scan run. I probably won't know till next Tuesday morning to see if it ran overnight.

Thanks for all the details -- very interesting indeed. I've not used the Removal Tool since last year so it could well be changed although I would have expected to hear about it!

I'll ask around.

PS -- are you able to give me the URL to where you downloaded the tool from? Or describe how you got to it, perhaps by searching on the Norton website.

Hi

Here is the link I used for the Norton Removal Tool. http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=

public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=963e7e9e-e723-4334-adae-64777279e15e&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20080710133834EN

On that page you can pick the product you want to remove, so I picked the one for System Works 12.

Don’t know if I can edit my post, so I am replying instead. On the bottom of that page, it says the following.  So it looks like it is like a brand new Norton Removal tool since it was just modified, at least that page was. And with the choice of products on that page, it looks like the removal tool might be a little different for each product listed there and therefore it might bring you to the download page of the program itself or to a similar one if you are uninstalling an old program that doesn’t exist any more perhaps.  DOCID:  20080710133834EN
