Intelligent Firewall blocks MS Edge

Issue abstract:
Intelligent firewall keeps blocking MS Edge

Detailed description:
The “smart firewall” keeps blocking the Edge browser. I always get the message “Hmmm… Your internet access is blocked” from edge. If I disable the firewall, the web pages load. If I remove the app from the Control Panel in Norton Firewall and manually re-add it with option “allow”, I can use Edge for a while (usually less than a day) before the problem occurs again. Disabling the firewall or removing the app and manually re-adding it (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe) temporarily resolves the problem before it occurs again.

Product & version number:
25.8.10387 (Build 25.8.10387.948)

OS details:
Win10 Pro 22H2

@DustyD Is this or something similar what your are seeing?

I DON’T use Edge as my daily use browser but do from time to time. FWIW. When using the MSN Windows app to view news there are times when an ad that begins get dumped by Edge WebView Access. Nothing shows in my history that that takes place. Here are my default rules as set when installing Norton, I have not edited them to date:

Hi SA,

and thanks for your reply. Yes, my firewall rule looks the same. Nevertheless, I just had the same problem with MS Edge again. :frowning: Deleting and manually re-installing it and it works - temporarly…

My default browser is Firefox, and I also have Google Chrome installed. Both work fine. So it must be the interaction between Norton Firewall and Edge. Before I switched to Norton, Edge also worked fine.

My internet is blocked in browsers after turning on VPN in Norton VPN.

Internet disappears after Norton VPN is turned on

Hi Napoleon,

thanks for this information, but I don’t use Norton’s VPN at all (nevertheless, tried it with and without it - same behavior)

@DustyD Is your version of Edge 140.0.3485.81 ?

Hi SA,

yes, it is: Version 140.0.3485.81 (Offizielles Build) (64-Bit)

English version:

That sounds interesting. I also created a “traffic rule” as you described (inbound and outbound, all profiles) and immediately reloaded the page in Edge, and it worked right away. I’m curious to see if it still works tomorrow. If so, I’ll mark your post as the solution!

Just to let you know: Edge works for more than two days now without problems. But I still have some doubts, if the solution is really save…

I agree with that. It doesn’t feel good. It would be great when another Norton specialist would repsond to our discussion, so someone else then the one I had the support chat with,

Everyone: Have any of you been updated to version 25.9.10453 (build 25.9.10453.953) yet? If so please post your results regarding the issues you are having. TIA.

SA

I have exactly that Norton de Luxe version, and if I disable the mentioned added Traffic Rule the isuue occurs again.

MS Edge version 140.0.3485.94 (Officiële build) (64-bits)

@kroos Thanks for the post back, this tells us the issue with the firewall has NOT been addressed. I have added this thread to the new tracking thread I began yesterday for the 25.9.xxx release issues.

SA

I’ve got the same behavior as kroos told: Version is 25.9.10453 (Build 25.9.10453.953), disabling the rule leads to the blocking of edge, re-enabled it and the pages load again.
