I am a casual gamer who downloads numerous games from Big Fish. Since installing Norton Anti-virus 2009 these games only get as far as 50% - 85% and then bomb out. I know I need to turn off some of the intrusion preventions, but do not know which ones (i am a novice at thses sort of things). Can someone please advice me on which intrusion preventions should be turned off?
I have always used Norton Anti-virus and it is only with this newer version that I am so totally stuck.
No, it won’t be possible if you have GREEN check marks in the Norton program. Anyways, run LiveUpdate from Norton 360 until you see the message that no more updates available. Then run a comprehensive virus scan. I would also recommend you to upgrade to Norton 360 3.0- latest version which is much enhanced and faster. You can contact theSymantec Technical Support, they will help you with the free upgrade. You just need to use the same product key of Norton 360 2.0 for activation.
Hi Kenneth, You are not alone with this problem, I have experienced exactly the same. It has happened to me 3 times I think, each time I have clicked the fix button and no further problems. No idea what triggered it though.
When you open the Norton ANtiVirus 2009 program, you can see the option for Intrusion Prevention under Internet pane. Click on the slider near the Intrusion Prevention to turn it off. Also, go to the Miscellaneous Settings, and make sure that both Silent Mode & Full Screen Detection is turned on. If the problem persists, disable the AutoProtect and check. Report back with the results.
djagerr, how do you know that these aren't bad files/games? If you are certain that they are safe, when the games 'fail', go to the Recent History and see what intrusions are detected. Once there, you can disable whichever signature is causing the detection.
What your Intrusion Prevention log is showing you is that your Norton Smart Firewall has blocked a portscan, which is an automated sweep of a block of IP address that hackers employ in an attempt to find unprotected systems that they can exploit. These portscans are a constant part of the internet background and are the reason that firewalls are so necessary. In your case, Norton is simply reporting that the firewall is protecting you as it is designed to do.
This would not be a cause of a slowdown in your internet connection, which could be the result of any number of other factors. You should check the actual speed of your connection, which should be close to, but slightly less than what your Internet Service Provider is supposed to be supplying. You can check your speed here. If you are not getting the bandwidth you have contracted for, you should contact your ISP. Since many things, including your system configuration, can contribute to a slow internet connection, it may take some trial and error to pinpoint the exact cause.
The Port Scan Notification is from Intrusion Prevention and could be a False Positive depending on the Port Number this is coming from. So, which Port Number is this coming from?

Thanks for the advice, i thought it was background but wanted to be careful and check.
As for the port, it is coming from UDP Port 53.
The internet, it has been fine all of today so far which leads me to believe they were just continuing maintenance because the net went down yesterday from them.
Can you please check and confirm is this normal. I install NIS2010 at at about 3:20 P.M., turned off the computer, and turned it on at about 8 P.M. However, there is only one instance of Intrusion Prevention starting in the Intrusion Prevention log. Shouldn't it be listed twice? Once at about 3:20 and once at about 8. Please help!

Just looked at your Log and that is normal as they both provide differnet information.
I mean about the instance of Intrusion prevention logged. Shouldn't be 6 total instances? In NIS09, every time I restart the computer there are three instances logged 1. showing tha IP is enable. 2. Showing the Engine version. and 3. The Intrusion Prevention definition.
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you're getting at; your Screen Shot only shows three, which is normal. More will be Logged if the I.P.S. gets Updated.

Just understood what you mean; my apologies. As long as your Intrusion Prevention is On and your Security Status is "Secure", then there's nothing to worry about. And as long as it gets Logged in your Security History at least once-a-day, then there's nothing to worry. However, if the Number of Signatures suddenly decreases, then I'd be worried if the Version Number hasn't changed. I think there has to be a certain amount of time to pass before it is Logged again in the Security History.
You can always check which Version of I.P.S. you have installed by going to (Windows X.P.): Start > My Computer > C: > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Norton > {0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7} > NIS_17.x.x.x > Definitions > IPSDefs.

Your log should show an entry for every time you have started your computer, going back quite a ways in time (days, weeks). Try clicking the Refresh List button. I note this is a new install, so you won't have a large history, but yes, if it is not logging on each restart, something is not right.

How to fix this "logging error"? It's a new installation and I'm already having problems!

THe IPS def is saying 20090911.001. However, I noted on the Norton website that this is not the latest defs. When will I get the latest defs?
The one your seeing is for Norton 2009 Products; Norton 2010 Products may differ because it uses New Engines which better-protect you. If there are Updates due for your Norton-branded Product, am sure they'll be Released as soon as possible.
