The same thing has been happening to me, coincidentally ever since I renewed my subscription in August. I also noticed that in the Firewall logs, the the version of the updates sometimes shows "SrcDef.12". This started showing up as well after my renewal and not sure what it means or if it means anything at all. Just wondering.....
BTW... my version is 10.6.8
I too have suddenly been having the same problem with LiveUpdate on my iMac (with 10.6.8) when running InternetSecurityForMac.
The symantec site seems to give a potential solution but I'm waiting the suggested 24 hours before trying it out:-
Error: "Updating Error. There was an error performing the update" when running LiveUpdate in Mac OS X
If you see this error message with Norton Internet Security 4.0 or Norton AntiVirus 11.0, wait for 24 hours and run LiveUpdate again. In the meantime, you can update the virus definitions using Intelligent Updater.
This error can appear when you run LiveUpdate with an Internet connection through a proxy server. To fix this problem, configure the network to bypass the proxy settings for LiveUpdate.
Configure Network settings
1. Click the Apple menu icon, and then click System Preferences. You may also open System Preferences from the Doc.
2. In the System Preferences window, double-click the Network icon.
3. From the Show drop-down menu, select your active network interface (e.g. Built-In Ethernet).
4. Click Advanced.
5. On the Proxies tab, in the "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:" textbox, add the following two LiveUpdate server addresses after the last entry separated by comma:
liveupdate.symantec.com
liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com
6. Click Apply Now.
Same with me (I looked at your screenshot) on Mac 10.6.8.
Tech support does not seem to get the importance of this issue, aside from the fact we have paid for a product that will not work. I tried twice to get this solved via live chat and after listening to their mantra for 15 minutes or so each time I
was cut off. How is that for customer service!
It looks like there are two issues here:
Please make sure you are using NIS 5.x if you are running Mountain Lion (10.7) or later. NIS 4 is NOT supported on Mountain Lion. It looks like several people here, including @basha04, are using NIS 4 but are running 10.7 which is not supported.
Secondly, for those of you running 10.6.8 and using NIS 4, make sure that Java is enabled on your Mac. It may have gotten turned off by Apple.
Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences and make sure the "On" checkbox is selected for both versions of Java that are on your Mac.
In light of the fact that I'm running 10.6.8, using NIS4, and Java IS enabled on my Mac does ryan_mcgann have any more suggestions ?
@mike473628, please try running the following commands on the command line:
sudo java -cp /Library/Application\ Support/Norton\ Solutions\ Support/LiveUpdate/jlu.jar com.symantec.liveupdate.LiveUpdate Installer
sudo java -cp /Library/Application\ Support/Norton\ Solutions\ Support/LiveUpdate/jlu.jar com.symantec.liveupdate.LiveUpdate -d
If you are not familiar with the command line, you will first need to open the Terminal application (found in Applications -> Utilities). Then when the new window opens in Terminal, copy and paste the first command above. Press return, and when it prompts you for your password, enter it. Then after that command has finished, do the same thing again with the second line.
Please copy & paste the outputs of these commands here so that I can see the results.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for following up on this. So..... did it do the trick? Is LiveUpdate working for you now?
Mike,
Can you please try running LiveUpdate manually from the QuickMenu (or however else you want to run it)? The log output looks fine for the re-install of Java LiveUpdate. The second command failed, but in a way that I expected (I hope). Please try re-running LiveUpdate manually to see if the re-install made any difference.
Ryan, Sabatine
I've run LiveUpdate again and it has failed again.
Please note that I hadn't (and still haven't) tried the solution suggested on the Symantec site (my first post above) as I haven't had a clean 24 hours between LiveUpdate attempts (and Symantec's suggestion was a bit confusing re commas).
Can you please post your liveupdat.log file? It can be found at
/LIbrary/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/LiveUpdate/liveupdat.log
You might have to rename it to end with ".txt" so that it can be posted here. If the file is too large to be posted here, contact me privately and I will send you an email address to use.
Thanks,
Ryan
Ryan
Some of this afternoon's LiveUpdateLog attached.
Enjoy.
Mike
It looks like this is the issue:
I am going to ask the LiveUpdate team for more information on this error, but I think it has to do to the recent Java updates that Apple has issued for 10.6. Thanks for your patience.
Thanks,
Ryan
Ryan
I was having problems with LiveUpdate on September 7th & 8th (& maybe prior to that ??) whereas I didn't install Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 10 until 19:33 on September 9th (Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 9 having been installed on 23rd June.
Copy of complete LiveUpdateLog attached (goes back earlier than my previous extraction).
(N.B. some of the repetitive 2-hourly overnight failures would be because the iMac was sleeping but wasn't connected to the internet ??)
Mike
I'm on 10.6.8 and have the same problem using version 4.1.1 of NIS. Java is enabled.
Using LiveUpdate from the menu bar if I click on 'Update Everything Now' the download fails. However I can download the virus definitions ok when done through 'Customize this Update Session' or when I click on 'Update Virus Definitions' in the drop down menu.
The trouble seems to be with the 'NCO for Mac Anti-Phishing Defs.' If I uncheck that box the other downloads work as they are supposed to. The 'Submission Control Data' seems to download ok too but still shows up as not being downloaded even though it has.
@gd5,
could you please follow the instructions above and post your liveupdat.log file here? I just want to make sure it's the same problem as the other posters.
Thanks,
Ryan
Ok, here it is.
