Hello all. I have been having the same problem with Liveupdate since mid. December 2008. I always get OPERATION FAILED. I contacted Norton then and was told a patch was on it’s way. Since then I have contacted atleast 8 techs. They have deleted and reloaded, they have had me run Intelligent Updater and NOTHING has worked. I am always told they know about the problem and they are working on fixing the problem and a patch should be ready soon. Well, that has been going on a month now. Every tech tells me it will be released in a few days. I am very concerned about my computor because the virus definitions are outdated. I am ALWAYS told though that my computor IS protected so “no worries”. I see alot of views but wonder how many others are affected by this. What I am wondering about is, I have another laptop with Norton and the Liveupdate is working fine! I am using Vista 64 bit and I have Norton 360. Having had Norton for atleast 8 years, I am really disappointed in the current situation. I feel they should be working harder on getting this fixed and easing our minds. I mean they are supposed to be protecting us with the very best software. Where is it?
Hello everyone.
You cannot connect to the live update because your system has been infected with a virus.
Packed Generic.200
I know because I have had this same issue for 3 months now and Norton support center could not even fix it.
I did find a free fix for it on the web and it worked like a charm.
Here are the two links for free scans and removals.
Restart your computer in safe mode and then run the first one as a quick scan. This first one found the "5 DNS Change" files on my computer and fixed it immediately.(use the free version)
Hello
Read my post as I found the fix for it.
I too had Norton remote my computer to no avail.
What a joke that was.
Email me for the link or take it from the post as I had to remove the begining and .com because of the restrictions on this forum.

Ok, I am gonna speak honestly. I DEPEND on my Norton to protect my computer. I am not that computer literate and I am terrified to try “outside of Norton” fixes. giggle I have even considered deleting my Norton and going with another product. Has anyone tried to above fix that was offered and how did it work, except for the poster? Poster, I am NOT in any way shape or form implying your fix is not a real one. I am just afraid to screw something up on my computer. Seriously. When I read that we have a virus, that is causing this trouble, I get a sick feeling.
Hello, John, thank you very much for your suggestions. I loaded Norton 360 on my machine the same day I took it out of the box brand new. I did not believe that there could be any virus or spyware on my machine but I figured that I could follow your instructions just in case. I download and ran all the programs exactly as you instruct in your post. Unfortunately or fortunately how every you wish to view the issue I found no spyware or virus. So, I’ am back to where I started still not able to get all the updates through live update. Thanks again for posting I’ am sue that this will solve the issue for many users looking for a solution for this error. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help me solve this issue. Thanks!
Why aren’t any Symantec people posting on here to keep us informed of the progress of the so called “patch”? I am deeply distressed and feel like we are being led around by our noses and NOTHING is being done. Thanks for your post DT. I am somewhat relieved to know it might not be a virus that is doing this.
Hello
Thanks for the update on what happened on your computer.
I have Norton Internet Security 2009. The information I provided was pulled from Google as there are many more people than us with this stupid problem. I am not sure if Norton 360 is the same as Internet Security 2009 or not. It just seems strange that the problems are the same. Not being able to live update. This virus caused my computer to not update anything... Windows, Defender, Could not sign into my google account etc. If anyone is having this same problem then it will be a sure bet that there is a virus in your computer. Mine was the Packed Generic.200 virus. These two programs removed this virus successfully. Hopefully it will fix others out there as well. For being such a big corportion, it is sure disappointing to read from these forums the amount of times Symantec has used "Remote" on our computers to no avail. HELLOOOOOOOOOO - how many times do they have to try this and fail to realize that there is a common problem out there and a patch should be made available asap. Also, I found it strange that my Norton 2008 caused my computer to run really slow and not print wirelessly. I did not find this out until I installed 2009 and Wow, my computer runs fine again. Maybe Norton has had its day as the company is too big and complacent now. Maybe it is time to move onto another company that can meets the needs of its users and provide good customer service and not lip service. It is easier to send me an email than us this forum for anyone looking for more information.
Just my thoughts.
John

I'm not sure which post you want people to read -- it's a good idea to make a link using the Insert/Edit link icon on the toolbar. When you use this to make a link it is helpful to change the second box to read Open Link in a New Window and then people do not lose their place in the thread when they use the link.
I'd like to address your reference to URL's and "restrictions on this forum":
I think what you ran into is a glitch in the Forum software that is definitely on the list to be fixed! If you got a message saying that the system had to do something because of invalid HTML etc then all you need to do is to click again on the POST button and it should go through.
I hope that helps you get your message across! <s>
Hello All,
With the generous help of several folks here, we believe we have identified the primary cause of the "Operation Failed" error and a patch is now in work. I have no ETA currently, but I don't expect that it will be too long.
In the meantime, to preserve your threat protection, please continue to use Intelligent Updater to keep your definitions up-to-date. You can download IU from this location.
As to John's observation that this is threat related, we have not been able to confirm. We're continuing our investigation on that front but at this time do not believe that this is the primary cause.
Thanks,
Matt
Well hellllloooo Matt!!! Thank goodness that you think you know what the problem is! I really hope this is fixed soon. I will need more valium soon, if not… lol
Ok Matt, I ran Intelligent Updater and it said it “failed to install ALL updates.” So great, that doesn’t work either.
Ok, ran it again with the RIGHT os (64 bit). It did work. They are up to date now. Ya know, I watched one of the brainiac techs using what I now know is the WRONG download!! That is why it NEVER worked for me. I have a 64 os not 32! Geez, lil ol me was able to solve that problem. Atleast I am not operating on defs. from Feb. 2008 anymore!
<< I have a 64 os not 32! >>
An important little detail!
Glad you worked that one out.
Thanks for the detailed feedback – great to know.
Dachie girl that is exactly what I would right if I was to write it again, what to do:/
Symantec, will you PLEASE keep us informed on the progress of the patch? I, for one, have been told a patch has been in the works for the past month.
Have you checked out this thread which is marked solved?
You might also do an Advanced Search on [live update failed] marking both check boxes at the bottom relating to Solutions -- that brings up some more Solved messages on this topic.
I get the impression that this follows an upgrade automatically downloaded.
I too hope that a fix is found soon, I am trying the intelligent updater and downloading it as I write. I did not know that my 360 was not downloading new updates (3 computers) until 3 days ago. I have been trying to get it fixed since. I have it fixed on 2 of the computers and found several viruses and trojans. but the third computer is still not fixed. and maybe this is a temporary fix
ok i downloaded and installed updater on the dual boot xp system that I am having problems with. It updated on one system. but on the other system it said to see log.IntelligentUpdater.txt and the file said at the end of each try:
IGNORE ENTRY: Ignoring entry for VIRSCAN.zip because of registry read failure. Error occurred while reading the path for the Authorization DLL from the registry.
Fri Jan 16 18:36:34 2009 : IU failed while deploying V because a compatible product could not be found on the system. Please make sure that a compatible Symantec product is installed on the system.
and of course LU1812 if I run auto-update
