Live update playing up!

Hi Guys
I made a thread a few days ago saying my liveupdate has been playing up and I’m still concerned about it the thread can be found here http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Live-update-problem-or-coincidence/m-p/1105386

The last time I had a automatic update was on the 5th of March I just find it strange how it’s stopped working. Whenever I run a manual update everything installs fine has the green tick saying it’s all good and it gets noted into the logs as saying I’ve done it. Pulse updates are happening because when you click on the far left panel the green text resets and counts up so I know it’s doing these. I just think it’s strange.
Anyone got any ideas on what’s gone wrong?

Hi again Apostolos.
How do I download the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool? Or would you reccomend updating to the newest edition of N360?

Thanks a lot

Hi,

NRnR tool here: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

Also, if you log on to your Norton Acoount it will give you the latest available version for your product.

Hope this helps,

Hello
Thanks a lot for the link I will get to this now. I know this sounds like a stupid question but since I’m from the UK does it matter if I download off the US site? And also will I be protected still while updating?

Thanks so much!

" since I'm from the UK does it matter if I download off the US site? And also will I be protected still while updating? "

Hi,

It doesn't matter at all.

Hi
Thanks a lot I’ll get to this now and post back when done!

Thanks!

Hi,

Close all open programs, browser included, while updating and when finished reboot, since you have W8, do a "real" reboot not hybrid.

Regards,

Hi Apostolos
I’ve just finished the reinstall and was really surprised how quick it was to do! I closed down my browser and exited all programs once I was doing the first part of the installation It then told me to restart so I restarted my computer (for your information I have hybrid start up turned off so it’s start from cold boot) after it was restarted it finished the installation I then ran liveupdate till no updates found and restarted one more time. And now I’m back on and running a full system scan. I just have one more question when I ran this system scan it skipped start to 5000 items scanned and then began to check for the scary programs! Is that anything to be concerned about?

Thanks a lot for your time and help!

Hi,

Let also your pc a little idle, mine is set to 2 mins, for the Norton Insight Idle task to run and having the latest database, after this your Trust Level will increase or drop, mine is to 99%.

"  when I ran this system scan it skipped start to 5000 items scanned"

Can you please be more specific on that??

Regards,

Hi
I normally leave my computer to go idle on Thursdays to do these background tasks but I may do it today if I have time thanks for the information.

An regarding the scan when I did it I was normally used to it to say searching for with the scary virus name around 2000ish items but this scan it was searching for them around 5000ish items which I find quite strange what do you think of this?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

These background tasks are running on a daily basis and many times, at the exception of, Norton insight Idle task which runs every 24 hours.

You cannot modify the delay for those tasks (AntiSpam maintenance, Licencing maintenance, Product maintenance etc) other than a few hours.

" And regarding the scan when I did it I was normally used to it to say searching for with the scary virus name around 2000ish items but this scan it was searching for them around 5000ish items which I find quite strange what do you think of this?"

Depending on the latest set of Virus Defs it may scan for more items and upon subsequent Virus Defs update for fewer.

This is normal, nothing to worry..

Hi Apostolos
I can’t thank you enough!
Thanks a lot for the information my scan completed and searched for 410,000ish files which was around what it scanned before I updated! A automatic liveupdate hasn’t run yet but I’m guessing that’s because when I ran the liveupdate it installed 11 or 12 updates! I’ll keep and eye on it and if it doesn’t update then I will write back here. How long do you think I should monitor the live update for to know if it’s doing it or not?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

Once per day should be enough.

If sometimes, the Auto LU logs do not appear in Security History, I wouldn't worry as long as the updates are downloaded and properly installed.

Best regards,

Hi
Thanks for everything you’ve been a huge help I’ll take your advice!

Have a great evening!

Hi
Sorry to clang a rusty bell so to speak!
But I left my computer on for around 2 hours and I didn’t get a live update but when I ran a manual one it gave me Web protection and a pulse update so therefore was listed in the logs. I’m not sure what has gone wrong here but it kinda feels like I have to baby sit my laptop! I know that sounds weird. But nonetheless say if I ran one manual update every time I turned my computer on would I be safe for using it for about 5-6 hours maybe longer? Even though I’m annoyed at it not updating manually I’m not sure what to do. I will leave it for maybe a week or so and if there’s no change I’ll have to think of something. I don’t want to get rid of Norton because I don’t know another good paid AV that’s as good as this and worth getting.

Sorry for posting a lot!
Take care

Hi AudiA1,

Maybe you are overanxious about automatic updates? Did you ever let your Norton product work on its own for a whole day?

I'm  in Europe too, and local time here is  9.35 PM - Automartic updates were received on my NIS today at:

07.02 AM  Norton Web Protection Definitions +  Norton Reputation Revocation List

09.56 AM  same as at 7.02 AM

12.39 PM  Web Protection Definitions + Pulse Updates

14.10 PM  Web Protection Definitions

16.23 PM  Web Protection Definitions

19.31 PM  Web Protection Definitions

The fact that we know that our Norton product calls home for updates every hour, does not mean that every hour there will be an entry about received updates.  Maybe no updates were available at the moment it called home, but they were available  on its later "calls"?

Really, IMO you shouldn't worry excessively and enjoy your N360, instead!

Cheers!

Hello Rainbow_2
I think I worry too much over my computer all together let alone Norton!
I normally turn my computer on around the hour gaps of 1:00PM too 7:00PM so I may be missing the liveupdates at some points. But I just remember them doing it a lot more frequently! But I will take your advice and relax for a week and just see what Norton does. When I turn my computer on I run live update till no updates found I don’t know if that makes a difference!

Thanks for the reasuurence

Hi AudiA1,

I will not say what you think I  am going to say!  :smileylol:

A bit of info for you.  You can go to Norton Tasks and see when the last Pulse Update was run - it does not tell you when it was run prior to the last one - but you can tell when the last one was run - if you see what time it was run and check back about 5  minutes from that time - you will usually see that another one has run.  That is normal - and there is no other entry in History or logs that show it running (as it ws run on it's own - ot in conjuction with a LiveUpdate.

Yiu can check your Automatic LiveU[pdate via Norton Tasks also -  my last one was run @ 3:08 PM - but looking at my LiveUpdate History - shows the most recent run @ 2:08 PM.  so in one case (History) it appears it has not run for over 1 1/2 hours and in another case (Tasks) it has run in a little over 30 minutes ago.

IMHO, I feel you would be safe for 5 - 6 hours without running the manual LU when you first turned it on - as long as you got the Green Checkmark.

FWIW, I run a LU every mornign when I boot up, as I shut the system down over night every night.

BTW I just sat here with my Tasks opened and since I do not type real fast, I noticed 3 Pulse Updates were done in the time I took to type this response.

Hi yank!
Thanks for the information and reassurance I know that pulse updates are occurring because they reset the green text in the far panel on the left of Norton. It’s just I find it strange that before I updated my last auto update was the 5th of March and now it’s the 16th of March and I didn’t get one while on today! But I suppose I’m worrying too much. I will monitor this and see of it does do a update hopefully it will!

Thanks a lot!
P.S I thought you’d say a whitty comment that would make me laugh!
