Hi yank!
Haha saying no more quesions till after the test would of been a good addition to your last post!
But anyway! That’s a good point I didn’t think about the 24 hour thing that Norton reccomends! I will keep that in mind while browsing I don’t go on anything dodgy so I should be fine! Just to add am I allowed to check every now and again at the panel to the far left to see if it has ran a live update? And what kind of information do you want me to record from this test? My computer is on now and I will use it till about 7:00PM or 8:00PM hopefully we find some stuff out!
Thanks a lot ![]()

OK, you can peek at the panel, but do not get worried about what you see or panic nd run a manual update! I knew you'd be peeking anyway! LOL
What tasks have completed, how long it's been since the definitions were last updated via Pulse Update, when the last automatic LiveUpdate was completed and any other info you feel may not be quite correct/or you do not understand.
Hi yank
Thanks for the information I just had a little peak and it says I’ve had a Automatic update I checked the history to see if they downloaded properly I’m sorry! And they all say success in the logs. I have closed the Norton window and will not be opening it up untill I’m finished using the machine!
Thanks for this yank I’m starting to feel a lot better while using my laptop! ![]()
Hi
I have just turned off my system and Automatic update ran once at 5:58 I think and the last time pulse update was run was 7:09 or something like that these aren’t the precise times but they’re close too it. I think all is well at this time but I will continue my mission tomorrow when I turn my computer on. Hopefully all is okay!
Thanks for all the help everyone ![]()
Thanks for the update - hopefully your trust is growing and you are enjoying your time online more than you did worrying about things!
I am enjoying my time online more and just learning to properly trust Norton! I get back to you tomorrow I say if it is doing what it has done today!
Thanks a lot
Have a good evening/afternoon depending where you are! ![]()
At the risk of going off topic a bit, I am in southern Mississippi (originally from Pennsylvania) and the reason I know about the British time difference etc is because my wife is from the Oxford Area. I stole her from the motherland while stationed there in the Air Force 45 years ago. She still has 2 brothers and a sister who live in the "Cotswolds".
No risk going off topic here yank! Southern Mississippi! That’s a long way away from me! I’m in London LOL, I hope the weathers nice over there we’re beginning to have some sun for the first time in a while! And your wife has family in Cotswolds! What a beautiful place to live! And you were stationed in the Air Force that’s really impressive I did not expect that at all, well they say you learn something new every day haha ![]()
Hi, AudiA1.
Glad to hear that all is well with Norton. Just so you'll know, Norton just installed a 20MB+ LiveUpdate on my computer. So, expect yours to receive that later.
Hi Inquirer
Thanks for the heads up I’ll look out for how big the update is mine might be slightly bigger because I’ll be turning on my computer later in the day.
Thanks a lot ![]()
It is probably the engine portion of the 21.2 update:
http://community.norton.com/t5/Product-Update-Announcements/bg-p/Product_Announcements
Hi, yank.
Yep, it was the engine. Currently, it's still v21.1.1.7 on my machine.
It will stay on21.1.1…7 until you receive the 2nd part of the phased update - per the product announcement.
I see. Thanks for letting me know.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
When you turn your system on in about 3 1/2 hours (@ 5 PM GMT), do not run a manual LiveUpdate, do not run any manual scans, do not open your History, do not look at your Norton Tasks, do not look at the Performance Flip chart, do not do anything except what you would do on your system if you were not spending so much time pouring thru all the areas, running scans and running LiveUpdates as you have been doing.
I know it's going to be tough, but leave the Norton do it's own thing - with no intervention from you until about 15 minutes before you are ready to shut down for the night. I understand that is usually around 4 hours after you boot up. At that point in time (and only then) you can look at what tasks have completed, how long it's been since the definitions were last updated, when the last automatic LiveUpdate was completed etc. Once again - do not give into the urge to run anything Manually. Now shut down the system, until tomorrow. Once again tomorrow, repeat the same thing and report back to us on what was found today. After doing this for a couple of days, give us a complete report.
I'm asking for you to do this for a couple of reasons - hopefully for you to relieze that the green check mark is your friend and also to see that Norton does a very good job of running on it's own without human intervention. Also if the is something problematic with your system we will be able to see what Norton is doing - without you interupting it's timing.
Great post
I'll add this, as a shout-out for us old-timers that remember the original TV series....
"As always, should any community member be caught excessively monitoring their Norton Live Update stats, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of their actions."
Back to business

I'd advise the same as other posters, no need to closely monitor the stats. That said, I do look at my Norton console once or twice daily, to insure that the Live Update/net connection is working.
I do that by opening the main console and clicking on the "Security" icon square, and glance at the last time that the Live Update ran on my PC.
I check the "Performance" flip screen less frequently, maybe once a day or once every 2nd day, to see the yellow Norton CPU usage peaks, that coincide with Live Updates or other Norton activities. I'll also check the CPU graph to note the overall CPU usage, looking for abnormal usage percentages.
Off-topic but related to the overall "peace of mind" approach regarding personal PC's:
I hope you'll pursue the backup plans that we had discussed in your "Tech Outpost" thread. That will provide you a lot of user ease pertaining to your overall personal PC experience.
It's just my take on the home PC experience overall, but it's best to put your main trust in your local backup routines since as we all know, no one PC protection product (AV, antimalware tool) can provide 100% protection from malicious events.
This is why I rely on Norton (and MBAM in my case) to block most intrusions but also to let me know in the event that something breaches their frontline defense mechanisms.
I'll also look at my "Process Explorer" tool or Task Manager occasionally to see if something looks abnormal.
Regarding Norton, it's my 3rd AV product that I've used on my home PC's and to date, my top choice. However, I'll borrow a phrase from past history and modify it a little regarding how I look at Norton, or any AV protection product:
"Trust but Backup".
Hi Scoop8
Thanks for adding in some more points and reasuuring me! I’m going to complete the same process I did yesterday while using my computer where I didn’t bother opening Norton upon start up and instead when straight to FireFox! I will also try to make some backups of my computer just because I like the idea of incase anything goes wrong you should be fine! And I don’t really pay much attention to the CPU usage or disk usage inside Norton because ever since I got my computer the disk would spike to the max when I turned it on, I’m not sure if t reflected on Norton but still! And I check my task manager sometimes but I have a mental note of what processes are running and I have remembered them fairly well so if something that looked weird was on there I’m sure I’d spot it! Any way I’m going slightly off topic I will repeat what I done yesterday at around 3:00 or 4:00 British time and will post back with what’s happened today!
Thanks a lot ![]()
Hi Guys
Just posting my results from today!
At 4:27PM I got my first update of the day and it was automatic it installed 8 updates
I ran a manual update I know I shouldn’t of but I did sorry! And I got the 20MB N360 Engine that you Inquirer and yank mentioned the update was at 5:14PM
I also ran one more manual live update as well and got 2 more updates that weren’t picked up by automatic update this was at 6:26PM
I forgot to check Norton tasks to see the last time automatic update was run but I believe it was at 4:27 when it was ran the first time it ran.
Pulse updates were running normally throughout my period of using my laptop.
Does this seem normal? I will repeat this process tomorrow and post the results.
Thanks a lot ![]()
Hopefully without sneaking in a manual update! LOL!~
Haha!
yank you know me too well!
But do my entry’s look okay to you?
Thanks a lot ![]()
Hi, Audia1. That situation seems normal to me. As I said before the main definitions come via the Live Updates, and the Pulse Update *topups*, as and when necessary.
