Hello,

I keep getting this error thru windows.  It seems fairly random on when it pops up but it multiple times every day.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Does anyone know what the problem actually is and how to fix it?

Thanks,

It might help others to answer if you said what version of Windows you are using and what version(s) of what Symantec software you have installed that is invoking Live Update .....

Oh, yes.  I am using Vista Premium and Norton 360V2.0.

Thanks -- that may help.

I'd better let someone with more specific knowledge chime in on this -- any specific error messages? -- but meanwhile:

When you say "stops" does it start up and do nothing or refuse to start?

Have you tried going into Control Panel where it puts an icon for Live Update and checking that out?

You could also look for error messages in Event Viewer (Start / Settings / Control Panel / Administrativev Tools / Event Viewer) that coincide with the error occurring.

The program itself seems to work fine but I am concerned that it is not updating itself as it should be.  The error that pops up on the screen says: "LiveUpdate Engine COM Module stopped working".  And I will attach a screen shot showing exactly how often is has been happening.

LUCom Error Report

You are way outside my area of incompetence <g>

Are you sure that is not normal for it to start and stop -- I know a lot of what I check up seems to be normal.

As I said, Hang on for some more help.

I am sure the module itself does stop and stop as it checks periodically for updates.  However, I have never before received these errors.  I wonder if maybe it has anything to do with Vista SP1…?  Not sure exactly when I did that update.

Can you check back through Event Viewer until you see when SP1 was applied and whether that was when the Stop messages started to appear.

If you double click on an error line in Event Viewer it brings up details which you could paste in here -- there is a copy icon on the screen that comes up; it looks like two sheets of paper -- and sometimes there are links to more information on websites which you could follow up.

I looked thru the event viewer and my update history and I cannot find a date for when Vista SP1 was installed.  I have Office 2007 SP1 and VS 2005 SP1, but not Vista.

hi Fragsrus - what happens when you run LiveUpdate manually (Tasks/Run Scans/Let me choose/LiveUpdate)?

Hi,

I get the same  "LiveUpdate Engine COM Module stopped working" messages, for a few weeks now.

More specifically in the VISTA event viewer I have the following after the last such message:

Faulting application LuComServer_3_4.EXE, version 3.4.1.234, time stamp 0x47bdf38e, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bdc9, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0003b15f, process id 0x1324, application start time 0x01c8c67aaae2c830.

I keep Vista updated as the updates come.

I see from another post elsewhere that there are memory issues with this LuComServer EXE.  It seems it maybe the thing eating my computer power.

http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/668092-solved-lucomserver_3_4-exe-memory-pig.html

So, I will disable it manually every time I turn on the computer and wait for an update from Norton that resolves this issue.

Wow! the same thing happened to me last week. I'm still struggling to fix it! If you figure out how to fix or what the exact prob is, please let me know.

Thanks!

I too get this error message, it usually is there when I close down a program but happens randomly.

Alas, I can not see your posted image. Maybe its me or maybe it was too large for the forum. In any event, I have seen this on A Vista Home basic m/c. The trouble with Vista (imo) is that it remains unstable and I had too many programs suddenly starting and stopping, and ended up with far too many reports off to Microsoft with no response. I presume when it stops working you get

"A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available." or some such wording.

If it crashes with report, you should be able to get further details; something like

This will be helpful I am sure. However, can we go back a bit, I need to know

how it crashes and what the report is.

In my example I gave

"A problem caused the application to stop...". You did not confirm whether this is your error message.

Also in my example it begins

"Product

Liveupdate engine COM Module

Problem

Stopped working...."

Your response only begins after the above, date and status.

PLease follow this LINK

and advise if problem returns. When exactly are you getting this error , on shutdown only?

Also please list any IE third party add-ins you have installed.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

As to what you are asking, the problem I am getting is a box appearing saying "Liveupdate engine COM Module stopped working" and it usually happens when I close down Civilization 4 or IL2 1946.  I followed your instructions and had to  change COM HOST and Symantec Core to automatic, I will report back if there is any further problems.  I also only have the google toolbar and norton toolbar installed on IE4.

Ps. The message appears exactly like yours in Vista Problem reports.

Your welcome. It seems to me that this is something quite different. You are having a problem after closing games. I wonder if the games are linking to the internet and there is some comms issue. Can you report back please even if there are no further problems, so that we know if the issue is fixed.

Also I am not explaining myself on what report I am after.

Please look at message 15, it is your posting. I need to know if there is anything else before "Problem signature" please.

The only thing it says before that is,

Problem                       Date             Status

stopped working           Various         Report sent

That is on top of the box where I copied and pasted (it is unable to copy).  I have this problem reported 11 times in this install of vista which I installed on the 11/7/08 and many more on my previous install.  Do not know if you need to know this but I am running Norton 360.

I cannot apologize enough but I need each time to check that I understand.

When you say you got the LiveUpdate Engine COM Module stopped Working problem, 11 times in the install of Vista. What exactly do you mean. Did you install Vista or did you mean restart Vista. If you got it during install of Vista then did you already have Norton installed. In that case what version did you upgrade from. If this was not an upgrade, did you get the problem before you installed Norton?

Are you running Norton 360 v1 or v2? HAs the problem now gone away?
