Hi Guys
This is the second time since using Norton I’ve had some sort of threat pop up so here’s what happened. I was on the website ultimateguitar.com trying to find some chords or sheet music for a song I was wanting to learn I think I typed it in and clicked enter but I must of clicked something on the page because it took me to a blank page where it said this site has been blocked by Norton and had the long web address which I didn’t note down so I don’t know If it was ultimate guitar or of it was some dodgy add but when I saw it, it didn’t look much like ultimate guitar.
When his happened I clicked exit and it made the tab white from there I closed every down and started a Norton 360 full system scan just to have some reassurance I ran this scan which scanned 416,135 files (I don’t have much on my computer) and the only thing was found was tracking cookies.
Can I safely say that Norton had my back for this one and I’m safe to use my computer as normal?
I think I may give ultimateguitar.com a break for a few weeks and stick to learning songs by ear!
Windows 8.0 Norton 360 21.2.0.38
Any clarification on this would be great!
Thanks a lot
Regards!
Hi AA1,
Most likely it was a part of the http page you visited, probably an add-in, which N360 found potentially malicious and blocked it, thus the white page.
If you want to minimize, as possible, that kind of issue, set the pop-up blocker setting for all your browsers to High.
If a scan with N360 found nothing, then I guess you were lucky this time.
Also, delete all your browser's cache, Temporary internet files, cookies etc.
As a precaution, run also a scan with MBAM, if nothing found you can safely relax!
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Hi Apostolos
How do I delete all of this within FireFox?
And I do not currently have MBAM installed but would you say I really need to install it and run a scan?
Thanks a lot
Hi AA1,
I'm not using FF but this should help:
How to clear the Firefox cache | Firefox Help - Mozilla Support
Hi Apostolos
Thanks for the information on that I’ve just realised my FF clears cache when it closes down and also removes history when it closes down. My computer at the moment seems to be working just as normal as it was when Norton blocked it so I’m feeling quite confident about it. I also checked task manager and there isn’t any weird processes in there and everything seems at good levels when it comes to CPU RAM etc so would you say I’m okay to skip MBAM?
Thanks a lot for your help and quick response

Yep...
Kind regards,
Hi Apostolos
Thanks for your help I’ll download MBAM as soon as I see anything out of the ordinary going on.
Take care and have a good day!

You're very welcome, take care too!!

Hi Apostolos
Just to add it was kind of bugging me knowing I hadn’t run a scan with MBAM Free so when I woke up I booted up my computer and went on over to the official MBAM website and then downloaded the free version off there and ran a scan.
It only scanned around 200,000 files where as Norton 360 would scan around 400,000 files either way MBAM came back as clean does this mean I am safe now?
And I have a few questions regarding MBAM does it start up when I boot up my computer for example will it be in the task bar bottom right?
And will it do idle scans like Norton does because if so I would like to turn these off.
One more thing next to the icon of MBAM on my desktop it has a shield next to it so when I open it up I need to click whatever it says to then open MBAM I don’t really mind if it does this just as long as I can use te program I don’t mind.
Thanks a lot

Hi AA1,
You do not want MBAM to run at startup but as a passive on-demand scanner.
Either disable the startup module from the main MBAM GUI or in Windows Search box type: msconfig and if it's listed under startup items uncheck it.

Hi Apostolos
I only got the free version of MBAM so does this mean I haven’t got the on demand scanner which you mentioned or if so is there a way to disable it? I remember looking In the advanced settings that turning something off was only avalible in the pro version but I will have to check. In addition I restarted my computer after running the scans and installing and it did it didn’t seem to start up with it.
Also is the scanning okay with how many files it scanned?
Thanks a lot
Also does MBAM check for updates every 15 mins like Norton does? Because I don’t want anything to clash?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions
Hi AA1,
Please see here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Tech-Outpost/What-happened-to-malwarebytes/td-p/1109782 message 7, as per LMacri's post, this setup should disable Real-Time protection and allow you to run MBAM whenever you wish as an on-demand passive scanner. Reboot your pc after the changes.
As for the files scanned MBAM & N360 use different approaches for the files being scanned, therefore the difference in the number, don't worry about this.
Hope this helps,

Hi AA1,
I tried MBAM long time ago, and I used to manually check for updates.
Play a bit with the settings but IMHO it's best to search for updates manually, every few hours or daily if you wish.

Hi Apostolos
I checked that link but the layout looks a lot different on that compared to mine I think it’s because I have the newer version on MBAM but I’ve looked in the Detection and Protection tab in settings and it says Malware protection disabled and Malicious Website Protection disabled too they are greyed out so you can’t change it.
Then in the advance options it says start MBAM with windows it has a tick on it but when I hover my mouse over it, it says ‘This feature is only available in Trial and Premium versions’
Can I safely say thy Norton is the only scanner now?
And why when I open MBAM it needs admin rules but I’m already the admin?
Thanks a lot sorry once again

Type msconfig in Search box and see if it's listed under startup items, if not then it doesn't start.
Normally with the free version and RT disabled, Norton is your only scanner.
Also, the warning you get for admin rights is a Windows Firewall feature it's by design.
You could bypass it if you right click to the MBAM installer, before running it, and under Properties if the option Unblock this file was available, you could unblock this file and no longer get this notification from Windows.
Hope this hepls,

Hi AA1,
I forgot to ask, when you ran the MBAM installer, did you right-click and select Run as Admin or not??
It's best to do this.
Regards,
Hi Apostolos
I don’t know what you mean about the msconfig but I opened task manager and went to start up and it’s not there so I’m guessing it doesn’t start up with windows.
In regards to the updates will they clash with Norton updates if they are both done automatically? If so how do I put these too manual.
And I don’t mind if the administrator thing pops up because I will not be using MBAM often I will only ever use it if I feel unsettled like I was today. So can I just ignore that and click yes when it pops up everytime?
I’m very sorry for all the questions
Thanks a lot
Hi Apostolos
When I installed it I did it through FF and just clicked run there wasn’t a decision for me as I could see of. Is this going to affect me in anyway?
Thanks a lot
Hi AudiA1,
Updates in the FREE version of MBAM are possible only manually, thus remember to check for updates before any scans you want to run.
