I use an old version of Firefox (v94) to connect to a pair of old Netgear NAS boxes. These require TLS v1.0 which is not supported on later browsers but by accepting the risks I can still connect to their webservers.
Since the upgrade to the latest version of Norton 360 yesterday I can no longer connect to these - I now get error messages “The connection has timed out”. I have tried this on three separate PCs - one Windows 11 the others Windows 10. In all cases the ability to communicate with the NAS boxes was removed once the update to Norton 360 was installed (automatically).
Is there a Firewall or some other setting that I can change to allow me to connect to these webservers?
Same here. The last version of Norton 360 blocked the network connection with my Synology NAS. If I turn off the smart firewall on Norton 360, the connection is re-established.
Same here as well. Norton, please fix this annoying issue.
Another user KyoMibu posted a solution that seems to have disappeared from this thread. The suggestion was:
Turn off browser protection or if you are not comfortable with that, try adding the website which you use to access the NAS in the Exclusions list.
If this doesn’t work, try turning off the Firewall to see if you can access it.
Also try disabling the Norton extensions if you have them enabled in Firefox.
Both options from the first suggestion worked for me but I stuck with adding the IP addresses for the NAS boxes to the exclusions list and I had never enabled the Norton extensions in Firefox. I am now back to where I was before this “upgrade” from Norton was imposed on me.
I don’t know why the comment from KyoMibu is no longer visible as it solved my problem and it may be helpful to others too.
All: Here is a bit of side information regarding TLS 1.0, and could be the reasoning behind Norton blocking it. Although I AM NOT a Norton employee this makes sense to me from a professional stance. TLS 1.0 is vulnerable, Microsoft is depreciating it in coming releases of Windows 11 for those reasons. Developers / software companies are in the know about how its vulnerabilities can cause wide spread chaos in not only a managed environment but home environments as well.
TLS 1.2 on client devices ( yours ) can be done with a little work following this guide. Of course if your NAS devices don’t support it contact them for guidance.
