NIS 2009 seems to crash IE 7

Thanks for the feedback – let’s hope it lasts.

nis 2007

I can assure you that the 3 computers would have tremendous problems rendering pages from an https site, could take up to more than 1 minute to change pages with Norton Confidential activated in ie7.  I did not have that problem before, just started a while back.  Nis 2007 was installed about 2 years ago.

When the problem started, I deactivated all addons and I could easily navigate.

Activated 1 by 1 addons and found Norton Confidential the culprit.  Now that's was a while back can't remember if 1 or 2 months.  For the record, I have java and others loaded.  When I fooled around with them, any other mix would not give me problems with the exception of Norton Confidential and I mean I did do mix.  Matter of fact, I deactivated all and only activated Norton Confidential and I had the problem.

So reading the thread now, I see somebody complaining going to delta which is an https site having problems and another person saying no problem.

So, being perplex, I reenabled Norton Confidential and found that AT THIS POINT IN TIME, I have no problem going to any https sites.

So, the only thing that has changed on my computer since I had to deactivate it are:

Norton updates

Microsoft mid november patches, maybe mid october patches but I can't recall how long ago it was therefore the mid oct I can't confirm.

Java, went from update 7 to update 10.

Apart from the above, no other changes were made on this computer.  Oh, just in case it could have made a difference, during that time period, I uninstalled nis 2007 and installed nis 2009, installed ie7pro, uninstalled ie7pro when I found it was not the cause of my problem with nis 2009, uninstalled nis 2009 to go back to nis 2007 and the first thing I did in 2007 was deactivate Norton Confidential without testing it first.

Therefore, one of the above mentioned update/software changed something.

I will leave Norton Confidential activated for now and if I see the problem coming back, I will right the bell.

Romi, I just read the post above and haven't read subsequent ones.  But I can think of one explanation.

Sometimes, the only important thing is the order in which things take place.  It could be that one add-on conflicted with an earlier add-on because it made a change that the earlier one ended up in conflict with.  by deactivating all add-ons and then reactivating them you may have forced some reinstallations behind the scene -- and this might have resulted in a correction to the problem.  Because this all happened invisibly, you may never know what the original problem was.

This is getting weird.  After I read the two latest posts, I thought I would experiment with my situation.  As I started the experiment, the Norton Confidential add-on was disabled.  Both the Costco site (the one I was having a problem with) AND the Delta multi-city page formed perfectly.

1) I enabled the NC add-on

2) I turned off MS phishing

3) The Delta site shut down ie7

...but get this

4) the Costco site worked perfectly!!

I reversed steps 1 & 2 and tried again.  Costco still worked fine, but now Delta multi-city did too.

However, while I don't have the lockup problem with Costco, other pages load MUCH slower with the NC add-on enabled.  I think I will just use ms phishing and leave NC disabled.

I checked "History" in NAV to see if any updates were made.  I found that "qttask.exe made 52 modifications to your Windows Startup Settings" at 2:31:07 EST today.   Right before I did my experiment.  Could this have been "it"?

This thead is getting kind of weird with a number of posters with similar-but-different problems.  I am losing track of who has what versions of which product.

Naplesam, is your NC up-to-date?  I just checked on the site and there is a free upgrade for users of version 1:  upgrades.

Also, is NC duplicating any of the functions of NIS?  Can there be a conflict there?

Weird........

Maybe we got carried away and lost you when we mention Norton Confidential.

For the record, we are talking about the IE ADD-ONS, in my case nis 2007 which activates a module in ie7 namely NORTON CONFIDENTIAL BROWSER HELPER OBJECT = NPPBHO.DLL

So, we were saying is that with the module activated, we have a problem navigating httpS sites.

You are correct thought to mention that within this thread, Codydog started by saying he is crashing, under another thread, I am saying that I am crashing also when I have NIS 2009 installed but for different reasons, and here we are mixing in the ADDINS, so, we are all expressing various problems we are having with ie7 and with different versions of NIS on top of that, so, it's really getting confusing I agree.

Hope you now understand where we are.

I agree with you Naplesam in regards to the difference in speed loading pages.  The MS phishing is faster, but again, I have the 2007 version.

Hi Joshua1600-

Thanks for the report - we are looking into it.

For the record, we are talking about the IE ADD-ONS, in my case nis 2007 which activates a module in ie7 namely NORTON CONFIDENTIAL BROWSER HELPER OBJECT = NPPBHO.DLL

As mentioned my previous post in this thread, I reactiviated the add-on to see if anything changed.

I reported a few days ago that the problem it had created had been fixed by some magic wand.

I also had said the problem usually in my case happened on httpS sites.  I had forgotten that it also happened on a particular site namely STOCKHOUSE.COM

Today, with the add-on activated, I had problems on this site.  I disabled the add-on NPPBHO.DLL and problem disapear.

Hi Joshua1600-

We have analyzed and confirmed the issue you reported with IE7 and NIS on Vista browsing the delta.com multi-city website.

We are developing a fix for a future release.

In the meantime, I can suggest a workaround of turning off the Identity Safe feature from the main NIS UI, restarting IE, then browsing the delta.com website.  I know this workaround is annoying, but it's the only thing I can suggest at present.

Thanks,

That would explain why I did not see this "feature" when I checked out the Delta Multi-Leg area -- I don't use the Identity Safe.

The workaround is valid. Turning off "Identity Safe" was a better option than disabling the "Symantec NCO BHO" in "Internet Options--> Programs--> Manage add-ons" Thank you.

For other users, the "Identity Safe" switch is under "Identity" on the fist UI invoked when you click the taskbar icon for NIS 2009.

I just wanted to say that for me, the most recent windows update to ie7 fixed the crashing while running nis 09 identity protect and p/word storage.  I am suddenly able to run both...no crashes.

This update came to me two days ago. (my full nis 09 now runs fine).

I run xp, sp2 .

The number of the windows update was: kb958215

The day of the success I posted it on front page in my own post but it got moved to another post it didnt fit in exactly and wasnt marked moved at all :smileyindifferent:. Anyhew...hope it helps someone else.

Thanks for the feedback.

Even after the latest MS update KB958215 (mentioned above) and turning off the Identity Safe in the main NIS 2009 window, I still experience random freezes of IE7 on my completely updated Vista Home Premium SP1 system. I’ve used all the suggestions offered in this thread and although IE7 isn’t freezing as often as before doing these things, I still suspect Norton Confidential’s “NCO BHO” IE add-on is the real problem. I have not disabled it because I feel I need whatever protection it offers…but, it’s a terribly annoying thing to freeze up without notice a couple of times a day. I’m getting very tired of software companies using their good paying customers as guinea pigs by releasing products that are not ready for primetime. I did NOT intend to buy into a seemingly still-BETA product. Symantec has disappointed me.

Sky…  Turn off Norton Phishing.  Turn on Microsoft phishing.  I did and every website I go to loads much quicker and need less to say, I no longer get the “lock-ups”.  When I bought my last laptop the salesman tried to get me to NOT buy Norton!!!  But as I have been a happy Norton customer for over 10 years, I didn’t listen.  I think I should have!

Have you noticed how long it takes Microsoft to push out fixes for security holes or other problems with products that they themselves wrote? And we complain to high heavens if Norton doesn’t have fixes for the attacks before they happen … <s>

Thanks naplesam!

I took your suggestion -- turned off NIS 2009's anti-phishing and then enabled IE7's phishing filter. You were certainly right about every website loading a whole lot faster! I have been surfing as fast as I can from website to website to see if the hanging problem recurs.... thus far no sign of IE7 hanging yet. It's too bad you have to disable so many of the NIS 2009 "features" to have an enjoyable browsing session though.

I also noticed the posting by admins about some new update coming soon. Don't know if that's aimed at fixing the IE hanging problems or not. In the meantime, I will leave the Identity Safe and Anti-Phishing in NIS 2009 OFF until someone can assure me that they work 100%.

Cody,

Never asked, but,

Are you using a single computer or you are on a peer to peer network?????

single vista 32 bit pc, behind a cisco router

ok,

I'll ask the questions they don't ask.

After this, we might see if we have a common problem or it's isolated.

1 or several profile on vista?

Which vista version and if ultimate, do you have sp1 installed?

The cisco router, is it a linksys router version 1.46.02, the company was bought by cisco or is it a real cisco router?

After this, we will see what we have in common apart from ie7 crashing hard.

If not, we will take our seperate roads.

Have a nice weekend
