NIS 2009 seems to crash IE 7

Firefox normally loads slow off the start but additonal start ups will not take long. It is not NIS 2009 causing your problem Zana. I also highlu doubt Firefox takes 15-20 minutes to open. Do you mean seconds? I run NIS 2009 with Firefox 3.03 on both my desktop and laptop with no troubles what so ever. Are you using any other security products Zana? Have you emptied your cookies and cache lately? Have you tried resetting your modem?

I don't know what the obsession with firefox is, but yes, it does take a long time to open, prehaps up to 5 mins every time.  I could have IE7 opened, and shut again in that time.  This is not an IE problem, it has happened to me in Firefox too, so please lets not hear anymore of the "use firefox and all your problems will be sorted." They won't.

Hi Dieselman :smileyhappy:

I Did Mean - Minutes .. Not - Seconds

And I'm Sure its NIS 09 Doing It :smileysad:

It happened again...

I've been using Firefox all afternoon - No Problem!

In & Out .. In & Out!

Firefox ...Taking No  Longer Than 2 Seconds To Open :smileyvery-happy:

Then knowing NIS 09 was due a Norton Insight Scan ... I left the Laptop for 10 minutes.

NIS 09 .. Did it's Insight Scan

I tried to open Firefox... NO - Firefox :smileysurprised:

This Time...

It was approx 8 minutes later .. Firefox appeared :smileysad:

It's every time my laptop has been left idle - & - NIS 09 has been at work...

IE7 or Firefox ... Have Problems Opening :smileymad:

Hi Dieselman :smileyhappy:

Almost  Forgot!

On My Laptop...

NIS 09

SAS

Nothing Else!

Windows Defender and Windows Firewall ... OFF

Note!

SAS Is Not Set To Start Up With Windows

And I only start up SAS about half an hour before I Shutdown my laptop ... So I can update it! :smileywink:

Don't Forget!

It was SAS that saved NIS 09's bacon... When it refused to - Update! :smileymad:

Do you have Firefox and IE set to “allow” instead of “auto” under the firewall settings? IE and Firefox both take about 3 secs for me to open. This is on both my pc’s. If you set your programs to “allow” this will give it greater privileges.

Cody,

Has the 16.1.0.33 update rectified the problem with ie7.

Not about to jump in the water until that has been resolved.  Forget about Firefox, I'm using ie7 and nis2009 should be able to work alongside it.

If the freezing has not been fixed, I will wait.....

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks

Nothing seems to have changed for me. Had an IE crash 10 minutes ago. As I am sure Symantec wants to have the best product with the best customer experience, I am enclosing the details.

Cody,

I know you said it crashed after their patch, did it crash again after or it's a stable product with ie7 now.

Would appreciate your answer.

The solution flag has now been cleared on this thread.   The Original Poster in the thread, in this case Codydog, has the ability to click 'Solution?'.  Moderators can as well, but usually we leave this to the OP.   Sometimes threads get marked 'Solved' too soon, other times it happens by accident.   The OP can also clear the solution using the options menu for the post that has the solution marked, but admittedly that is not very obvious or intuitive.

Also note that anytime a thread is marked 'solved' in error, any user can use the 'report abuse to moderator' link to let us know.  Please note that we will only correct clear errors, we will not try to second guess the OP in cases that are not clearly mistakes.

Now that we strayed from topic momentarily, I now return you to this thread's issue...

Just had this IE7 crash on Vista SP1 Business with NIS 2009 V16.1.0.33.  Was logging into a website when it occurred.

well, I didnt click 'solved' as I am still crashing here with regularity.

I see siliconman has also encountered the same issue.

Perhaps our beloved Norton experts can address this now.

Thanks.

I have Vista, ie7, nis 2008 (15.0.0.60) and have been having trouble with ie7 locking up with certain websites (best example = costco.com).  Started a few weeks ago.  Everything just freezes and SOMETIMES the page will load after many minutes.  Found from another source yesterday that it is Norton Confidential.  I disabled that add-on in ie7 and not does costco.com load right, all other pages load much quicker.

I started a chat with a Norton tech, but all he wanted to do was to take control of my PC to help me find the problem.  I tried to explain that I had already found the problem and wanted to know if there was a fix available or on the way.  No luck getting tech to understand and I gave up.

Not sure if my problem is same as this one, but close enough that I thought I'd contribute.

Any suggestions?  OK to leave the Norton Confidential add-on disabled?  Should I change something else?

Thanks!

Hi naplesam,

I can assure you that your problem is not Norton Confidential.  I have been running NIS08 on IE7, on Vista, for a whole year and IE7 was stable.

Do you have Macromedia- Adobe Flash Player installed?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

TrDo.

P.S. please chck this as well: Re: Norton Internet Security 2009 - One Click Support not responding - (12-05-2008 01:53 AM)

All I can tell you is that once I disabled the Norton Confidential add-on in ie7 that my problem went away!  Please note that it happened only on certain websites and not all.  Additionally, all sites are now loading faster with the add-on disabled.

Naplesam,

I already made the same comment on my other thread.  Happens on 3 computer of mine, you were right in disabling the module.  I found an did that a few months ago and have had no problems since then.  The problem occurs when you try to log in on a https site and navigating within pages on the site could take up to 1 minute for the page to display.

The only difference between us (although important) is that mine is XP pro and Nis 2007, which kind of proves that about a month ago, Norton made a change somewhere somewhat which cause the problem to occur.  Been running for almost 2 years prior to that and never had the issue.

Of course, diehards will point to ie7 so who knows, the only thing I know is even if it's cause by a Microsoft update to ie7, Symantec should have followed and ajusted itself, if not, what is the point here to struggle with these issues.

Greetings all:

Problem: IE7 crashes with NIS2009 on Vista Ultimate.

Identified problem component: Symantec NCO BHO.

Work around: Disabled Symantec NCO BHO (Internet Explorer add-ons); Enabled Microsoft Phishing Filter.

Repeatability: Go to https://www.delta.com/ and click on the "multi-city" option; with the Symantec NCO BHO enabled, IE7 will crash EVERY time after rendering the multi-city page. With it disabled, the site will WORK every time.

I have followed the Symantec tech support recommendations as well as all the standard procedures for troubleshooting (clearing caches, checking updates, etc.). Looking forward to additional suggestions.

Thank you.

I just tried the Delta page with IE7, XP Media Center with SP3, and NIS 2009 with the mentioned addon enabled. No problem at all when I clicked on multi city. The page rendered and IE kept on trucking.

So it must be another one of those pesky Vista issues.

There is more than meets the eyes.

XP pro sp3

nis 2007

I can assure you that the 3 computers would have tremendous problems rendering pages from an https site, could take up to more than 1 minute to change pages with Norton Confidential activated in ie7.  I did not have that problem before, just started a while back.  Nis 2007 was installed about 2 years ago.

When the problem started, I deactivated all addons and I could easily navigate.

Activated 1 by 1 addons and found Norton Confidential the culprit.  Now that's was a while back can't remember if 1 or 2 months.  For the record, I have java and others loaded.  When I fooled around with them, any other mix would not give me problems with the exception of Norton Confidential and I mean I did do mix.  Matter of fact, I deactivated all and only activated Norton Confidential and I had the problem.

So reading the thread now, I see somebody complaining going to delta which is an https site having problems and another person saying no problem.

So, being perplex, I reenabled Norton Confidential and found that AT THIS POINT IN TIME, I have no problem going to any https sites.

So, the only thing that has changed on my computer since I had to deactivate it are:

Norton updates

Microsoft mid november patches, maybe mid october patches but I can't recall how long ago it was therefore the mid oct I can't confirm.

Java, went from update 7 to update 10.

Apart from the above, no other changes were made on this computer.  Oh, just in case it could have made a difference, during that time period, I uninstalled nis 2007 and installed nis 2009, installed ie7pro, uninstalled ie7pro when I found it was not the cause of my problem with nis 2009, uninstalled nis 2009 to go back to nis 2007 and the first thing I did in 2007 was deactivate Norton Confidential without testing it first.

Therefore, one of the above mentioned update/software changed something.

I will leave Norton Confidential activated for now and if I see the problem coming back, I will right the bell.
