I've done a lot of searches and so far I've seen nothing to indicate that it is possible to have Windows without this service.  Or if it is, then I can't find a way to get it.

So before we spend time going down the wrong road, we need some information.

1.  Does your son's account have administrative rights?

2.  Is your son running with his computer with UAC active?  UAC is that annoying screen that pops up every time you launch a program and asks you if you really want to run the program.

3.  Have you run Microsoft Update and optioned for the "recommended updates"?  These updates include a number of items you might not consider important, but which really are.  It is possible that Terminal Services are include among them.  My recommendation is to accept all recommended updates and that might solve your problem right there.

Excellent for 1.

We need to do something about 2:

We have found that UAC interferes with the correct installation of NIS and NAV; and is also a pita in general.  You need to turn this off.  The instructions that follow are straight from Microsoft:

To turn off UAC

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, click User Accounts.

  3. In the User Accounts window, click User Accounts.

  4. In the User Accounts tasks window, click Turn User Account Control on or off.

  5. If UAC is currently configured in Admin Approval Mode, the User Account Control message appears. Click Continue.

  6. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box, and then click OK.

  7. Click Restart Now to apply the change right away, or click Restart Later and close the User Accounts tasks window.

After doing this,

1.  run the Norton Removal Tool to clear debris from previous attempts to install Norton; then

2.  retry the NIS installation and let us know if that has helped.

Turn off UAC.

ok UAC is off  completely and it seems that NIS needs the Terminal service because of the firewall, the NAV 2009 installs with no problems but I only have a key for NIS.Thks

Darn!

Okay, just for the heck of it, let me rephrase my question about Microsoft Update.  For some strange reason, Vista is harder to update than XP.  Vista tells you that you are up-to-date when it only means that the Required Updates are installed; it is not referring to Recommended Updates.  So are you CERTAIN that the Recommended Updates have been installed?  I apologize if you feel you have already answered this but I need to make sure we are on exactly the same page here.

Hi yes I checked again and did an update the only updates left are all languages.

Can you confirm that you have looked in Services and that Terminal Services is not there?

I have checked my Vista Home Premium SP1 and Terminal Services is clearly listed.

Thanks.

Yes I have checked it and the 3 terminal services are not there ,on this machine i have there are 3 , my son has no entries in the services tab for Terminal.

Thank you.  I appreciate your patience.

I am going to have to do some research on this.  I might not find anything before the Symantec Techies get back from their weekend -- if so, they'll have a quick answer, I am sure.

Another question or two to help me in my checking:

When you get to the screen that tells you the problem, what are the options at that point?  I mean does it say something like "Cancel, Re-try, Ignore"; or is there just an okay button to click and that's it; or is there some other kind of message?

You mentioned that NAV installs with no problem.  I am assuming that NAV is not on the computer while you're trying to install NIS -- am I right in this?

Terminal Services is the process that (among other things) allows another computer to take over your computer.  It is used in Chat sessions when a technician wants to repair something on your computer himself instead of talking you through it.  This has become a standard in the computer industry and almost every computer that is sold includes a reporting and repairing process from the manufacturer -- which would require Terminal Services.  So I am trying to find out why it's not findable on your computer.

Okay.  Like Phil, I checked my son's Vista system but in a different way.  I used the Help option under Start and typed in Terminal Services.  Under the extensive listing were two important items:

1.  Terminal Services does not need to be installed - it is installed by default.

2.  A link to enable Terminal Services.

Would you follow my lead and do the same thing, then see what happens when you click on the link to enable Terminal Services?

Hi sorry but I am not following your steps mijcar pls tell me the steps.

Thks

Ok I tried the NAV 2009 install on my sons machine and it gives the same error as with the NIS 2009.

Sorry for confusion.I had tried it on a machine with Terminal services just diasabled but with no problems my sons machine like I said has no Terminal entries found.

The error is a popup box comes up with "a problem has occurred pls go to support site .

I then click on the link with the info on Terminal services.

Thks

Hi

Maybe have a look in the add and remove components.

To Add/Remove components in Vista, do the following:

- Open Control Panel
- In the left hand pane choose “Classic View”
- Double click “Programs and Features”
- Look in the left hand pane and click on “Turn Windows Features on or off”

- Once the box is “updated” you will be able to Add/Remove Windows Components

Similar to "Adding and Removing Windows Components" in XP

Also Microsoft has released RSAT (formally add-on pack)  that may help it gives features for Terminal Services

Role Administration Tools managing Windows Server 2008 servers:

Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) Tools

Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Tools

          Failover Clustering Tools

          Group Policy Management Tools

          Network Load Balancing Tools

          SMTP Server Tools

          Storage Manager for SANs Tools

The tools in the following list are fully supported managing Windows Server 2003 servers:

Thks for reply What Programs and Features should be installed?

The download for the Microsoft stuff u gave me should be where?

Thks

Hi

The link for the RSAT is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9FF6E897-23CE-4A36-B7FC-D52065DE9960&displaylang=en

It may be able to see the problem and give you the option to install "terminal services" again.

As to what features should be ticks or untick, I'm unsure, have a look to see what to do with networking is unticked.

Maybe someone else can check and be nice enough to see what should or is ticked when Terminal Services is installed.

Ok Thks Right now my son has AVG installed free version , we also tried avast and antivir  they all install with no problems but I really like the new 2009 Norton products so I would rather go with that.

Hi

Just seen where there RDP 6.1 (includes Terminal services) is included as part of Service Pack 1 for Vista, can not be downloaded seperatly.  Gulp.
