Hi

What was the Previous Security software installed??  Before NIS

Quads

Sometimes security software takes awhile on first boot. How long did you let it sit there and wait?

I had NIS 2008 before I installed 2009.

I left it alone for at least 30 min but it was still just a black screen and no disk activity what so ever.

Did you completely remove NIS 2008 before installing NIS 2009?  Did you use the Norton Removal tool?

I have used both the add/remove programs and the NRT but I keep getting the same hang on boot.

I have the same exact problem. Windows XP SP3. Used Norton Removal tool to remove NIS2008 and I have no other security/antivirus installed. It just hangs at the welcome screen every time. So what gives?

Are you using the latest NIS2009 build 125 ? Make sure it is not the pre-release version of NIS2009 .

You can download it from here : http://www.norton.com/nis09

Use NRT to remove Norton 2008 is not a clean uninstall. Try to restore your computer to the preinstall factory setting or Reformat the hard disk to perform a clean installion of NIS 2009.

Make sure you dont change any system files or Norton files . Turn off the smart firewall , anti virus ,anti spyware and advanced protection after you install the NIS2009 and try to restart the computer.

If the problem still persists, try to contact technical support via Live Chat.

I am using build 125.

I tried another install, turned off everything I could and still hung on boot up.

I have re installed NIS 2008 and it works fine. Maybe a newer build will come along that will work soon.

I really, really don't want to wipe my drive out and re install XP and all my apps just to upgrade my security program.

Do you possibly have SpySweeper installed? If so, this is a known issue that is tracked in this thread.

No on SpySweeper. I did have Spyware Doctor (verion 5.5 and 6) prior to NIS 2008 but I have uninstalled it.

Same here. I manually removed as many Norton/symantec entries as I could from the registry editor, reinstalled with the most recent build, shut off everything like you suggested but it still hangs at the same place. I’d like to avoid anything as drastic as formatting my hard drive. I’m planning on building a new rig when the Bloomfield processors come out, maybe  I’ll just wait and start with a new system.

ResEdit, if I understand your most recent message correctly, you're still having problems booting after you've uninstalled the product?

Regardless, I'm have no idea what the problem may be but it has been suggested that you perform a Safe Mode boot and then try to boot normally. Windows can repair itself sometimes by doing this.

No, I only have the boot issue when NIS 2009 is installed.

Thanks for elaborating ResEdit. Have you tried the Safe Mode “fix” that I suggested?

I tried the safe boot/boot normal option you suggested and all it did was hang.

Downgraded to NIS 2008 again.

ResEdit, at this point I suggest that you try to enable boot logging and see where the boot is failing. I found a good article about this on Watching The Net -- How To Enable Boot Logging For Fixing Startup Problems in Windows.

Please let me know how it goes.

I have 2 XP PCs running NIS 2009 and one of them has a similar issue to ResEdit. About 1 time in 8 or 10, the PC boots as far as the desktop image but no icons appear. A difference in my situation is that the PC is not frozen, it just never finishes the boot process. I can bring up Taskmanager, initiate explorer.exe and then have my icons. But I am approx. 10 processes short (compared to normal) when viewing Taskmanager. If I do a shutdown/reboot via Taskmanager, then things usually come back. (The PC that's having the boot troubles is my newest one (Dell Vostro 1400, XP Pro SP3, separate NVidia video card.))

I will look into running a boot log and see if I can run across anything. Other than this issue, I have been pleased with NIS 2009. It runs lighter than any security setup I have ever used...

HAN, your issue sounds quite a bit different and I doubt that logged booting will help. I haven’t heard of a case like yours before. As an unlikely shot in the dark, do you happen to have SpySweeper installed?

No, no Spy Sweeper. The other security related apps are Superantispyware Pro (real-time scanner on but 1st chance scanning turned off), WinPatrol Plus and MJ Registry Watcher (a file/registry change poller.) The same security programs (with the same settings) are on my older laptop and as I noted, it runs fine. (HP Pavilion 17" laptop with ATI graphics.)

Have there been any issues with NVidia? Sometimes it seems that NVidia has more issues than ATI...
