NIS 2013 Firewall cannot be monitored by windows 8

Hello everyone,

I have upgraded my NIS 2012 to NIS 2013, and yesterday, I have upgraded windows 7 to windows 8 pro.

The windows 8 action center reports that NIS firewall and antispyware are not activated. I have checked NIS 2013, everything was already activated. It seems that the NIS Firewall and antispyware could not be monitored by windows 8.

Does anyone have solution about that? Thanks in advance.

Colin

Hi ,

Can you re-install NIS 2013 and check firewal status?

Thanks.

I have the same problem, have re-installed NIS 2013 and the problem still exists.  Windows 8 action center reporting Spyware/virus protection and firewall as being switched off.

I see a similar problem with norton 360 where it is said this is a bug in win 8, is this the case here?

No problems here.. I'm using NIS2013 with Windows 8 Pro RTM x64...

Works great! :smileyhappy:

Also, make sure you reboot the system after the install, this fixes alot of issues and is easy to forget to do! :smileywink:

I am also experiencing this problem, have tried to uninstall then re-install; after reboot initially showed everything ok but after next restart the problem was back, NIS 2013 appears to be working ok only Action Centre monitoring of NIS 2013 appears to not work.

Windows 8 Professional (64 bit) with Media Centre  Download Version (Purchased on 26/10/2012)

NIS 2013  v20.1.1.2

Same thing here. Everything has been updated, re- booted, uninstalled- reinstalled. According to the Norton notifiaction area, all is up to date and running properly, but Windows is telling me I have no anti-virus or firewall turned on. I have a Lenovo N585 upgraded from Windows 7 running Norton antivirus to Windows 8 Pro. Nothing I do seems to make a difference.

Same here.

My system was upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 HP.

Issue:

  • The Action Center security messages show that all spyware and firewall applications are turned off. I receive the same messages in the notification area of windows 8.
  • I have Norton Internet Security 2013 (latest version) installed. Of course the Norton firewall and virus protection options are both on and working.

I re-installed Norton IS 2013 and the issues seemed resolved, but then it appears again randomly.

Hello everyone

I have the same problem

My system was upgraded to Windows 8 PRO from Windows 7 home edition.

The difference is that I use Norton 360  version 20.2.0.19

I have the same annoying issues ... I upgraded from Win7 Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro.

Unter Win7 I upgraded from NIS 2012 to 2013 - it worked.

- Firewall is switched off

- AntiSpyware is not working

It is not possible to activate NIS and I´m not able to open the NIS GUI.

I used the NIS Uninstall tool without any success.

So - I uninstalled NIS 2013 and reinstalled NIS 2012. I was still not able to open the NIS GUI, *but* the AntiSpyware and Firewall are active. I updated to NIS 2013 and ... no Firewall- and Spyware-Protection.

btw - the Norton-Win8-App telling me, that it has not find any Norton product (but I can buy it ... haha?)

The only solution - uninstall Norton, using the Win8 Firewall and Windows Defender.

Great. I´m sure it must be a BIG problem of two BIG companies to solve this BIG problem.

btw - a german NIS-user was so pissed off about that, that he has removed NIS 2013 and using right now Kaspersky - I mean > thats the solution? If yes, please give me a note. Thx! :)

....

Oh, I see a new version - I will try this and give a response.

I M P O R T A N T  N E W  F O R  Y O U !

I solved this problem on Windows Vista and Windows 7 on a similar way.

I solved the problem on Windows 8.

These are instructions only for Windows 8.

Sometimes, after you have uninstalled a firewall, antivirus or malware detection program the entry remains because the uninstaller failed to remove the entry from the Action Center either by design or just sloppy coding.  Either way, you are not stuck and this is easily fixed.

You will need to force the operating system to repair Windows Management Instrumentation, and Security Center before proceeding, create a restore point because if you mess up here, worse things can happen.

Go to the start search box and type “services” (without quotes) and press enter.

1) Double click on Security Center and Click on "Stop" button.

2) Double click on “Windows Management Instrumentation” (WMI - highlighted in red) and make note that the service status is started.

In order to proceed you will need to pause the WMI service so double click the entry and click the “Pause” button.

It will take a few seconds for Windows to pause the service so wait until it completes before proceeding.  Leave the services dialog box open.  Now you need to proceed to your Windows directory and delete a specific folder.  DO NOT delete ANY OTHER folder except the one that is specified.

Head to your “C:” drive or whichever drive Windows has been installed to and boots from.  Go to the Windows directory…

Once inside the Windows directory locate the System32 folder and proceed into it…  (make sure that you have entered the System32 folder and NOT the system folder) Inside the System32 folder you will find the wbem directory so, yes, you need to go into another one, we’re almost done. In wbem you will find a folder named Repository which contains information that is reported to the Action Center such as which programs are installed, firewall status, etc.

As I said at the beginning after installing and uninstalling different security programs, these entries can become corrupted and report false information to the Action Center.

With your Services dialog box still open, check and make sure that the Security Center is still stopped and the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is still paused, if Security Center is stopped and Windows Management Instrumentation is paused, proceed, go ahead and delete the repository folder and make sure ONLY to delete the repository folder, DO NOT delete any other entries.

Yes, I did say to delete the repository folder, see it, sitting right there, delete it, I mean it, do it now, did you do so, okay.  Now, go back to your services dialog box and remember how the Security Center is stopped , start it up again and WMI service is paused, start it up again so double click the Windows Management Instrumentation entry once more and click Resume.

These steps forces Windows to redo the inventory of your installed security applications (firewall, antivirus and the like) and rebuild the Security Center index.  It will take a few moments for the service to Resume.  Remember that repository folder you deleted, well, you will now note that it has magically been created again with a new inventory of what’s installed.

The Action Center may still be reporting the wrong information but that’s okay, sometimes you have to restart in order for all the changes to take effect.  After you have performed all these steps (and optionally restarted if the changes did not take immediate effect), you will note that the Action Center is almost barren at first, this means it is retrieving the new information and will take a few moments before the new data is displayed.  Once fully initiated, the Action Center should now be displaying the correct information as to what programs are installed and functioning.

If you have followed these instructions to the exacting letter, there should be no problems.  If you did somehow manage to mess anything up, there’s that restore point you created earlier.

This should help you to solve the problem.

Hello sandro_cm

I am also now using Win 8 Pro with NIS2013, and was having the same problem with Action Centre reporting Norton switched off.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I followed your instructions.

Am now happy to say everything is now ok

Action Centre reporting that Norton is in full control.

Being cautious, I renamed the Repository Folder to be on safe side, but as you said, it just remade another one.

A lot easier and much quicker than reiinstalling, especially when that doesn't cure the problem.

Thanks from Boneidle.

Hi Boineidle,

I am very happy to have helped you to solve the problem which rightly puts anxiety and frustration to users.

Yes, that's right, if you rename the folder the procedure is faster, but the important thing is that in both ways, the problem is resolved.

Those who have a problem like yours, should try to do this. In this way I was able to help several friends.

Have a nice day.

        Sandro

I followed the instruction - thanks for that - and had no luck.

The first time - I was happy, because it looked like that NIS 2013 was working as expected.

But opening a application (ACDSee Pro 5, PSE11, Firefox...) giving me errors.

Restart > Desktop > I got error messages one after another from different applikations.

Open Security Center and again - AntiSpy and Firewall offline.

Uninstallation NIS, removing (hopefully) all registry and services > Restart > Using Windows Defender and Windows Firewall > no error, Applications could be opened (unfortunaly not PSE11?)

So - thanks again, but I lost my confidence in Symnatec/Norton and will give up their Security Suites.. Could be that my system is special in anyway, but still - under Win7 it worked.

But again, thanks for the help! Very nice from you. :)

JMOGER,

I'm sorry it did not work on your Windows 8 PC.

I think that's probably something you missed or you made a mistake while editing, or your system is really in bad shape.

I used this procedure on at least 10-15 other computers of other people, including on one of my PC, and all computers are working properly after this change.

I have not your computer in my hands, maybe you know better than me why it did not work.

I'm really sorry.

    Sandro

This worked for me also but I had to STOP both services!

Thanks!

Thanks Sandro_cm

I have had this issue since installing Win8 pro - your solution fully resolved the matter

thanks again

Tried Sandro's method.

Unofrtunately, it didn'y resolve the problem, the Windows 8 Security Center is still confused.

Hi davepmiddleton,

Could you tell me which Norton product are you using and which version?
Do you have any antivirus or other software that run on Startup in addition to Norton?

   Sandro

Hi Sandro,

Thanks for your response.

I am using the latest Norton Internet Security 2013, version 20.20.19.

My machine was upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7. Before the upgrade I ran the same NIS 2013 version.

There is no other security product running, except for maybe the default Windows firewall and Defender. After your instructions Defender could not be found so I guess it is not working.

Cheers,

Dave
