Resource monitor this freezes the computer activities for 10 or more minutes while the hard drive thrashes with these two above files...will little cpu... but high read/writes per second continuously.
Didn't do this with version 20 of NIS with same machine. Thought it was my hard drives, replaced those and installed NIS and same thing...high disk thrashing... I did turn off automatic programs and manually approve or block each program that tries to access the Internet.
Hi Basil:
Regarding the original problem posted by slee2 that occurs when Advanced Events Monitoring is turned ON in the NIS 21.x (NIS 2014) Smart Firewall settings, do you know if Symantec is working on a bug fix? Forum administrator Mohan_G requested diagnostic logs in October 2013 from the following three users who reported a similar problem but there haven't been any updates in those threads since then.
The only workaround I've seen is for users to downgrade to NIS 20.x (NIS 2013) and then set Automatic Download of New Version to OFF (Settings | Computer Updates) to prevent NIS from automatically upgrading back to NIS 21.x .
I'm not sure about the status of this issue, but as an alternative to downgrading the product, you could leave Automatic Program Control disabled so you can continue to manually control network access for applications, but disable Advanced Events Monitoring, as it appears to be the cause of the excessive hd i/o.
We managed to reproduce the issue and have a fix in the works.
The fix will be available in the next product update (not sure about the schedule yet).
In the meantime, you can disable Advanced Events Monitoring to avoid the problem. As mentioned previously, you can continue to manually control the network access for each application even with this feature off.
Thank you all for your help and patience with this problem.

Hi Basil:
Thank you for following up with this issue. I always use the default settings with the Smart Firewall but I know that there are several users in the forum who were eventually able to trace their high I/O problem in NIS 21.x back to the Advanced Events Monitoring setting and will be happy to hear that a fix is in the works.

Please see the comment from me (abhawasinka) on the second page which contains a image.
I think the issue is not yet resolved completely. The application should use a buffer and write it periodically (longer than 1 seconds) to avoid continous disk I/O.
I was able to successfully reproduce the issue unintentionally with NIS 21.1.0.18. After investigating the disk thrashing using Process Monitor from SysInternals, (and stumbling across this thread) I observed that it was continuously trying to write to C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-OF1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NS_21.1.0.18\symnetdrv\TrustDB.dat
This issue is occurring on a fully patched version of Win 7 x64. After multiple minutes of fighting the machine, I was able to turn off Advanced Events Monitoring in the settings and excessive disk I/O appears to have subsided.
Please see Basil's reply for the latest information. Unfortunately, we can't communicate timeframes or schedules for patches, as things are always in flux. I'm very sorry for not being able to provide you with more information.
However, to be updated via email on the latest patches for Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus, please visit the Product Update Announcements section of the community, specifically the Norton Internet Security labelin the right column. At the top of this page, you will seen an option to "SUBSCRIBE to this label", which will sign you up for email notifications every time we post an update labeled with "Norton Internet Security".
Mohan_G announced an update for Norton Utilities (NU) v. 16.0.2 here in the Product Update Announcements blog today. The process for subscribing to announcements about NU is similar to what Tony described for NIS - click the Norton Utilities label under the Labels heading in the right column, then click "SUBSCRIBE to this label" at the top of the page, which will sign you up for email notifications every time Norton posts an update labeled with "Norton Utilities".
Alternately, you can choose to be notified about every post in the blog (i.e., any Norton product update) by selecting Subscribe under the Blog Options dropdown list.

The high I/O problem observed by post originator slee2 and others in this thread is caused by a bug in NIS 21.x when users turn ON the Advanced Events Monitoring setting of their Smart Firewall (Settings | Network | Smart Firewall | Advanced Settings | Configure | Automatic Program Control | Configure | Advanced Events Monitoring) and still persists.
Please see Tony Weiss' suggestion here to subscribe to NIS product update announcements so that you'll be notified when the patch is eventually released.

FWIW I just upgraded NIS from V19 to the current version 21.1.0.18 this morning after reading the suggestion that that might affect failures in internet connections (that I was experiencing).
It went smoothly (although a 249MB download plus 17 updates) and I've just checked the Firewall setting Imacri lists and it was already set to OFF. I think I've seen that this is the default.
I really don't understand whats the problem with NIS team and forum members(Norton/symantec employees). It looks like they don't want to know or fix the problems in their products.
I have told here and in another post that the problem exists even when the advance event monitoring is turned off, but no one is accepting the problem. I really don't understand how your company can release such software. Don't you test it?
Most forum members are just users that volunteer our time to to help users from our experience with the Norton products. Norton/Symantec employees have their names in bold red letters.
The products are tested thoroughly. Unfortunately, with Windows computers, there are millions of combinations of hardware and software that all have to work together. You could have a unique combination that could be causing your problems.
You say you are still seeing the issue with advanced event monitoring. This could be an issue with some software or hardware driver you have installed that the others here do not. That is why we ask many questions about your system and installed software.
Quite awhile ago I was sure that NIS was causing my PC to BSOD (blue screen of death). After quite a bit of help from Tony_W and online chat support. It was determined my RAM was bad. No problem, I just returned the RAM and got a new set and problem solved. Just had to temporarily use substitute RAM. Everything in my PC was new too. So that made me more adamant that it was NIS. But like I said above it wasn't.
