NIS v21 high hd I/O

I have windows 7 x64 and did a fresh install..installed norton internet security from trial from symantec website trial download and installed...did 3 live updates and 2 patches it installed...

Getting high IO disk thrashing with these two:

c:\programdata\norton\0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF91126E7\NIS_21.0.2.1\symnetdrv\TrustDB.dat
c:\programdata\norton\0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF91126E7\NIS_21.0.2.1\symnetdrv\TrustDB.dat.log

Norton Internet Security 21.0.2.1

3+ million bytes read/write per second

Resource monitor this freezes the computer activities for 10 or more minutes while the hard drive thrashes with these two above files...will little cpu... but high read/writes per second continuously.

Didn't do this with version 20 of NIS with same machine. Thought it was my hard drives, replaced those and installed NIS and same thing...high disk thrashing... I did turn off automatic programs and manually approve or block each program that tries to access the Internet.

After a fresh install, there can be a lot of disc fragmentation. It is possible that your system is being defragged.

See if this goes away after a day or so.

No.. this is a continous problem .... defragmention is not an issue... I use 2x1gb drives in RAID 0... and they are brand new... last 2 drives I had had hardware ecc error and unrecoverable sector error...so I swapped them out for new ones... It happend after I updated the 2 patches from liveupdate......

If you have the Firewall Advanced Event monitoring on, try disabling it.  you can do so from:

Settings, Network, Smart Firewall, Advanced Settings (configure), Automatic Program Control (configure), then set 'Advanced Event Monitoring to OFF.

Please let us know if that eliminates the excessive disk activity.

Hi,

I turned AUTOMATIC PROGRAM CONTROLL off.... then clicked on CONFIGURE in the Advanced Settings under Smart Firewall options. I then clicked on ADVANCED EVENTS MONITORING is ON...

I want to be able to know what program is accessing the Internet and choice to say yes or no....

I reverted to version 20.4.0.40 .. but know that I will have to update when I do liveupdate....Seems like there is a bug in the patches.

Hi,

Automatic Program Control and Advanced Events Monitoring are two independent features.

The automatic program control determines whether firewall decisions are made automatically (when enabled) or the user is prompted for the answer (disabled).

Advanced Events Monitoring is a collection of features that monitor and report additional events such as module loads and program launches. these features can be enabled only when Automatic Program control is disabled because they require manual decisions by the user.

If you wish to control which apps can access the network, you just need to disable Automatic Program Control and leave Advanced Events Monitoring Off (which is the default setting).

Hope this helps, let me know if this fixes the excessive I/O issue.

Upgraded from NIS 20.4.0.40 to 21.1.0.18 and now NIS doing high HDD I/O
Its frezzing up the whole PC.

The offending process is the same other users

The older version did not have this issue. I was forced to upgrade as the old version had compatabilty issues with Windows 8.1

Please pass this issue to NIS developers

Hi Wijesiri,

Do you have advanced events monitoring enabled?

if it is enabled, please see my previous post for information on the feature and how to disable it.  Please let us know if this helps.

I can confirm this issue if advanced monitoring is enabled. It occurs on all my systems (Windows Vista, Windows 7 x64 and Windows 8.1 x64). The previous Norton Internet Security Version works fine.

I use Norton for many year but this is really disappointing.

Is it planned to fix this issue?

Folks, my Lenovo IdeaCenter w/ Intel core i3-2100; 3.1 GHz CPU; 8GB memory and lots of HDD space. This machine has experienced the same reported disk thrashing since October 2013. I have read most all post on this forum relative to the subject of “NIS v21 high HD I/O”.

My machine runs Win7 64bit w/ SP1 and latest patches; Internet Explorer version 11.0.9600.16428 w/ update KB2841134. My current Norton Internet Security (NIS) version is 21.1.0.18. I have already run the Microsoft deep virus malware check, MalwareBytes, and Norton Power Eraser along with multiple NIS full scans of all connected disks. The HDD does not need defragmentation since it does auto check weekly. Just to be sure, I ran the check manually on 11/13/2013 and defrag wasn’t needed.  NIS 'Advanced Event Monitoring' is set to OFF.

This machine ran without freezing up prior to October. It would be good if Norton Support and their Development Team would create a case/ticket #, do a low-level code deep dive into NIS, and work with us to monitor this issue. Hopefully, it would be resolved and/or Symantec and Norton Internet Security app would be cleared.

The same problem here. I've had high HD I/O since couple of weeks for no apparent reason.

Interesting thing is that it looks like high HD I/O starts when my PC is idle although Idle Time Optimizer is set to OFF and no scanning schedule is set.

Hi jcrisler / Viscon:

The high I/O problems being observed by post originator slee2 and others in this thread are caused by an apparent bug in NIS 21.x when users turn ON the Advanced Events Monitoring setting of their Smart Firewall (Settings | Network | Smart Firewall | Advanced Settings | Configure | Automatic Program Control | Configure | Advanced Events Monitoring) .

Advanced Event Monitoring.jpg

If your firewall's Advanced Events Monitoring is turned OFF you might want to start a new message so this thread doesn't go off-topic.  I've posted commments here about how you can monitor system idles with the Norton Performance graph and Sysinternal's Process Explorer that might help you identify the process responsible for the high I/O.  The Norton Tasks window (Performance | Norton Tasks) will show you the Last Run time of each of your automated background Norton Tasks (e.g., the Insight Optimizer disk defragmenter) that could be responsible for this high I/O.

UPDATE

This hdd high activity started even while I was working.

However, when I turned a silent mode on it stopped but after about 20 minutes started again.

Eventually I decided to let it be this way to see what happens.

After about 2 hours of doing nothing on my PC there was no hdd activity and everything has become normal since.

Now no more problems.

Looks like there was some background task NIS decided to run for some reason although I didn't schedule anything in the options.

Anyway the issue is gone for now.

Hi Viscon,

Just a hunch, could you please flip your Performance and then select Norton Tasks - do any of the taks show time completed close to the time your hdd quit thrashing? I’m really interested in Fully System Scan.

Thanks for checking.

Hi,

None of the tasks have been reported as ran or completed during abnormal hdd activity.

I set everything to manual and I have no idea what NIS was running on background.

Apparently it "completed" something however....

I'm wondering, as far as I remember hdd trashing occured when I switched from one OS to another in my dual-boot configuration. So something like "external volume modification" could have happened, and NIS got somehow confused about drives volumes. This however is just an assumption...

Thanks - I know nothing about dual booting - but I was thnking perhaps it was the auto full system scan, as it has been known to start and stop a few times when the system is coming in and out of idle and then decides it needs to complete and takes over the system (so to speak) running until it finishes, Normally if this occurs we recommend to just let the system sit idle until it does it’s thing - whichis what you did to let it work again.

Hi Viscon,

I'm curious as to which operating systems your are dual-booting and whether you have the same version of NIS installed on both. thanks.

Hi Basil,

I have two copies of Win 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit on two separate hdd's.

The second one is just for trying updates, hotfixes, new drivers etc. or experimenting with various configurations.

Both have the same NIS2014.

Lately I was trying IE11 + new MS hotfixes on the second hdd (checking if they might cause some issues).

That's when hdd trashing started on both drives when I was switching operating systems.

Thanks Viscon,

Your answers rule out my suspected interaction due to dual-booting, especially since you have a separate HD for each OS.

Well, it was worth a shot :)
