Detailed description:
I’ve been having issues suddenly being unable to RDP between laptops in my home on my private network. Just discovered network is listed as Public. I change it to Private and find that after a reboot, it reverts back to Public. Windows Firewall says it’s controlled by Norton so I’m guessing it’s being caused by Norton 360.
Product & version number:
Norton 360 (unable to locate a version)
OS details:
Windows 11 Pro
What is the error message you are seeing?
No error - just finding network changing to Public which prevents seeing other devices on network as well as prohibiting RDP

Thanks for the reply Peter.
I’ve searched the entire page and these is no Apply or Save anywhere. Win11 is quite a learning curve from earlier versions.
I’m now having the same problem in Norton 360 version 25.4.10068.1594. I searched for Network Trust and wound up at Security/Advanced/Smart Firewall. All my networks are listed with a slider to set them to public or private, but no dropdown to set a trust level. Where do I find that option in this version of N360? Thank you.
In norton 360 main window you will see the message “We set your network to public” and a button to change the network to private. Click the button and wait, the notification will go away. The issue is Windows “remembers” the prior networks settings as public and you must go into Windows Wifi settings, saved networks and click “forget” on the Wi Fi network you are trying to connect to and then reconnect. This should resolve the issue.
This is still happening even in 2025 June to be exact so i am guessing there must be some sor tof bug in Norton 360 as it doesn’t do it with any other security suites. So it is not a windows issue.
As otheres have said here Norton is getting to the point that it is causing more problems than solving.
Just look at the safesearch extension that thing is like malware itself.
Hopefully they can finally fix this but if they can’t it’s time to move on.
July 3rd 2025- the problem still exist. A message popped up that I am on a public network. I am not. I am at home-working. I don’t know what damage if any may be caused by the fact that Norton’s reads my network as public??
@Yolanda_Flores@Gerard_Stadalius Are you both using the latest updated version 25.6.10221of Norton? If so are you still seeing the issue? My W11 Pro laptop didn’t show any signs of Wifi network getting changed to public while using it this morning. It also doesn’t have ethernet so I cannot validate that.
I’m having the same problems on and off for the last few months. Just assumed it was a Windows 10 thing, but know I know it’s Norton. A reboot sorts it out, but why does it think my home wifi is a public network and I can’t access the internet? It’s annoying to say the least, especially since Norton know there is a serious problem here
that’s just nonsense Jusin. My laptop doesn’t leave the house, so why do I get the message saying I’m on a public network, when 2 hours earlier I was on the same private network, that it now claims is public? Norton knows there is a problem and are too slow to do anything about it
Det er let gå under firewall og ret dem manuel fra public til privet det er det eneste du kan gøre lige nu men jeg håber de snart fixer det så det skal ikke gøres den måde
