Norton 360 Scan Error 3038, 104

Hello,

I was about to run a Full System Scan on my desktop before leaving but as soon as I initiated the scan it tries to start but then shows not complete in the scans box. The AutoFix apparently could not find a fix for this issue so I'm not too sure what this is.

I am running the latest version of Norton 360 version 21.0.1.3 on a Windows Vista system.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi ACS4500,

Here is the Knowledge Based Article for Error 3038, 104.

Please verify your system date, time and time zone prior to following the fix.

Please also notice the What if this didn't work?  at the bottom of the page.

Please let us know how things go.

Ok,

So this is some kind of Live Update error? My desktop is almost always on so I would guess that Norton 360 automatically runs the Live Update every few hours or so. Was there some kind of change with the new Norton 360 update?

My system time, date, and time zones are all current and running properly. I just returned to turn the computer back on for the evening and ran the Live Update. So far the Full System Scan appears to be running and scanning all the files as normal. I will let the scan finish it's cycle before confirming that anything is fixed.

Thanks for the input!

It appears the scan froze and the file number has stopped counting.

Scan issues can often indicate a problem with the hard drive.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

How long did you let it sit there with it stopped counting? I have seen it sit there for 5+ minutes in the past and it did eventually continue - especially if it were a compressed file that was taking do long.

It won’t hurt to check your disk as peterweb suggests.

I believe it was sitting for about 15 to 20 minutes.

I think I will go ahead and test the hard drive and disk just to check things out. This desktop is 6 going on 7 years old.

I have this problem too..

Just tried to run a Quick Scan, but came up with error

Norton 360
21.0.2.1
Error: 3038, 104
Windows 8

Also, I ran a live update, and there was a 122MB update.. bit unusual?!

A large update like that ususlly indicates there may have been a corruption in some Norton files on your system. The large download was replacing the bad files. That could also explain your error message.

If everything is working without errors you should be OK.

I'm still getting error messages when I try to start a Full System Scan.

Any other suggestions or input?

Hi ACS4500

Try a Norton full scan in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu).  Disconnect the internet before booting into safe mode as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan.

Safe Mode has no internet access, unless you select Safe Mode with Networking - no need to do anything to disconnect from the internet.

Did you have any errors reported with the disc scan?

There where no errors on the disk scan.

I was able to run a Full System Scan in Safe Mode. The scan found and removed 11 Tracking Cookies and that was it for that scan. I ran the Full System Scan again in Safe Mode and everything returned clean.

Should I try Norton Power Eraser in Safe Mode with networking next?

Try clearing all Windows temp files. Then find the Windows/Prefetch folder and delete all the files in that folder. These files help Windows load programs quickly. They will be recreated when Windows is restarted.

Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Restart the computer once more. The first restarts may take a little longer as the Prefetch files are recreated.

Hi ACS4500

The error message is not related to an infection so running the Norton Power Eraser is not really necessary but at the end of this post is a safe way to use it.

Try a full scan in normal mode?

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?  If so what is it?

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

What trial security software came with the computer?

It is recommended that there is 10% free space on the hard drive, can you check this?

yanK has previously mentioned the links below which point to updates, can you confirm that you have performed these two tasks?

The link below is from the link above and is at the end of the page where is says, what if this didn’t work.

The Norton power eraser can detect files needing deletion, that may then cause the operating system to fail so if you run the Norton power eraser, and are not sure about the files, copy and paste the log files that it produces then create a new thread asking what should be deleted.  Choose not to delete any files unless you know what you are doing.

Norton power eraser download link below.

You might like to backup the personal data and you’ll need to backup or export in both formats your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the above.

Hey intesec

Sorry for the late response.

The only security product that I have is Norton 360 and Norton Power Eraser as a secondary scanner. There is also the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool built in but I rarely use it. Other than that I do not have any other security software installed on this desktop. There are no other security programs or software bundled in any of the download files.

I do know that my main disk drive is infact nearly full but I believe there is at least 15% left on the disk.  I also did complete the LiveUpdate until Norton stated it was up to date. I did not do the intelligent updater though. Should I run the intelligent updater anyway?

Hi ACS4500

Have you tried a full scan in normal mode yet?

Do you have norton through Comcast?

Conflict in security software can be the cause of various issues even if the security software has been uninstalled the debris left on the system may not have caused problems until an update has been installed.

Yes I did try the scan in normal mode and no I do not have Norton through Comcast.

There are absolutely no other security products other than Norton 360

Hi ACS4500

Did the full scan in normal mode complete successfully?

Computers have a trial security software preinstalled what did your computer come with?
