Those are some interesting ideas. But I’m affraid v3 will take a while

Agreed, but it’s more than likely they’ll have begun development on it already, so now would probably be a better time than any to give some feedback.

maybe. I just don’t want to make expectations that this will be released next month if it can take a year from now

It’s a fair point, I didn’t mean to imply that we’d see this anytime soon, more for the developers to take into consideration.

It’s ok. Don’t worry.

The Beta will probably be around in December I should think. I totally agree about the Virus Scan details being more thorough.

louis,

I'm an engineer on the backup team and i can definitely confirm that the file selection will be much improved when Norton 360 v3.0 comes out.

Second, with regards to running the scan for files only when the Backup UI is launched, I can understand why this might be frustrating if you have a lot of files.  However, the reason for doing this is that users don't tend to open the backup configuration dialog very often.  As a result, we thought it would be wrong to run a scheduled task or something in the background that tracked files on the system and imposed a performance hit on the users machine at times when they aren't worrying about backup.  It was a decision based on making sure the user's overall system performance is as fast as it can be.

Finally, the spirit of the N360 backup engine is really based around the idea of backing up your important content and files as opposed to Disk and Volume based backups that Ghost does.  In my experience, file-based backup tends to be more understandable for novice users and therefore allows more of our customers to be successful with backup.  That's not to say that this won't change or be extended in the future but for the near-term I (personally) don't see it changing.

I hope this helps, and thanks for the input (we really do listen to it)

Regards,

Adam

Thanks for the reply,

Good to hear about the file selector.

In regards to the UI scanning, I see your point, and it's probably the most justifiable one, potentially a middle ground would be to implement some sort of throttling on how many resources it does use to perform these searches? I have 3 machines with norton 360 installed, two of them are multi-core and see little performance impact when using the UI, however the 3rd is a single core (Penitum M 1.7ghz) and the cpu usage shoots right up to 100% causing serious performance impact.

However, aside form cpu use, disk usage comes in second as affecting it, I don't know whether it'd be possible to keep your reads under a certain limit to allow other programs to have their fair share of disk and cpu usage, but would be nice.

As for volume backups, I don't see why implementing a *simple* volume backup (something that won't confuse novice users) can't be understandable under monkier's like "backup windows" or "backup my computer" or some sort of similarly clear notion.

I think even novice users have an understanding that backingup files /= the entire computer is backedup. I understand that a balance has to be made with 360 due to it's target audience, but I think a volume backup is definately attainable (in terms of making it understood) with a bit of work.

Maybe that's something for the research team!

Regardless, thanks for taking the time out to respond.

louiswu,

Great feedback!  It's good to hear directly what you and other useres are looking for.  While I can't confirm our upcoming feature set, let's just say great minds think alike... and we've heard your feedback loud and clear.  :-)

For anyone else on the forums, if you have feature requests, suggestions about how things work or are described, usability nits, etc., call them out and we'll consider them internally.  Many of our favorite features so far in N360 1.0 and 2.0 were directly due to your input, so I'd like to encourage more of that.  No promises on getting everything in, but I think it's been a great source of feature validation.

Thanks for the reply mark, looking forward to seeing what makes it in eventually.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

>>...Include which virus have been discovered in some sort of history, other than just the number of virus' would be nice to be able to see when a file has been deleted, and which file, incase something you thought you wanted to keep has just dissappered without your knowledge.>>

Hope they keep this in mind.  :smileyindifferent:

Yeah, it doesn’t seem as if it’d be difficult to implement, as it’s already in the IS product line, just have a “history” button somewhere amongst the task page, or off the PC Security section that will bring it up.

Bump,

no one else has any suggestions?

Don't wish to harp on about it, but some sort of history is I believe essential. I understand about 360 being for the less technically minded etc, but history of major events such as items that have been detected and removed, apart what is stated in Quarantine, is IMO necessary.

Just a couple of examples, in this forum we have seen many threads where Intrusion Protection has blocked frustrated users out of Facebook, but no one knows where to check for this, or any Intrusion Protection events, as there are none listed. Also, many threads speak of where users think N360 picked up and removed a virus but are not sure, and they think there may be bits left over, but have nowhere to look apart from Quarantine for the name and location of the virus, and then there is nothing there, as not all deletions are kept in Quarantine.

A lot of people like myself I have heard say are in a quandary and tossing up between NIS and 360, this issue being one of the most heard. I like 360, but think I am going to have to go over to NIS because of this, and then I will miss all of the other features on 360.

I think a middle ground should be reached, but it's only my opinion. :smileyhappy:

I hope that you guys don’t mind me make a suggestion but I would like to see a change in the automatic scanning process. I’m always on my computer doing work but it just seems inefficient to have it sit idle for scanning. I know that you can change this by setting up a scheduled automatic scan but for the average user, they will just install it and that’s that.

chi-chi,

we never mind suggestions, thanks for giving us yours.  With regards to the automatic scanner we are always looking for better ways to get our job done and keep your computer safe without interfering with your day to day work.  The idle scanner is just one way to accomplish this.  The hope of the idle scanner is that when you get up to walk the dogs or get a cup of coffee that we can get something done in the meantime while you are gone so that you don't have to worry about running scans manually and you never have the product eating up your computer resources for scanning while you are trying to get your work done.

However, as you point out, this model doesn't work for everyone.  When NIS 2009 and N360 v3.0 come out you will see some improvements in the automatic scanning process that makes it more customizable to your habits.

keep the suggestions coming!

Adam

Here go some of the suggestions desired for the upcoming Norton 360:

1.  From the performance perspective, the scans can skip authentic core OS and Symantec files by checking their Digital Signatures or some other algorithm/means to determine that the intended files have not been tampered.

2. Transparency in the status of background scans. The Norton360Status widget compensates for that, and we wish it should be integrated with Norton 360 main program. It would be nice if the Norton sidebar gadget for Vista displays all the status.

3.  If possible, allow users to modify / fine-tune the automatic scan parameters, like the idle time to wait for user input, CPU usage, etc. I know, it would confuse the intended audience, but we can always hide the settings under some super advanced settings with a restore to default button to undo changes. This might end the confusion regarding the automatic scans.

4. Prevention of Symantec services from being stopped or being disabled. It is pretty easy to stop the service from the services window(with SymProtect enabled) and crash N360. I have seen some third-party tools that efficiently protect their services from being stopped.

5. Allow cleanup for the history of items that Norton 360 removes / cleans up. For example, it lists the names of all the websites it has cleared from Internet Explorer history and anyone sharing a single account  on the computer would be able to see the list of websites that had been visited. We know it can be prevented by using different login accounts for windows, but some people do share a single account.

6. Most of the newer threats target IE add-ons and display un-intended messages. An add-on monitor that asks the user to authenticate the add-on being installed might help prevent such attacks.

7. If a user's computer got infected with new threat and receives popup messages and Norton did not detect it, allow the user to point to the popup using some tool in Norton 360 to capture windows handles, etc. and determine the acting file to report it for faster analysis.

8. Use of Flash in the Norton 360 2.0 OCS chat window is a nice addition, but it does not bring the chat window to focus or sometimes does not scroll the view to the latest received message from the support. We sometimes wait for a response only to notice the scrollbar change its size and manually scroll-down for the latest response.

As much of which I have had symantec products from internet security 2003/04 on upwards I am not that fond of this product. One I can do without the backup feature as it’s a pain to run. I would like to see something like nortons antibot incorporated so that if you happen to download malware ie vundo trojans the suite can detect and delete it. My other suites could actively detect a host of spyware/malware or viruses. Norton 360 v2 lacks.  I had to run two other applications for malware just to see why I was getting popups and ie windows opening telling me that I was infected.  Used those applications (which was free) to clean my drives. I expect that if you pay good money for a product that claims to do all it says then deliver the goods or get back to the basic.

I want to see IM protection in v3
