Norton Antivirus 2013 Icon in a system tray

I upgraded from Norton antivirus 2012 to 2013 yesterday and now when i start my computer the icon in system tray takes 3-4 min to load. With 2012 it was loading immediatly. I tried to change Boot Time protection to "normal", "aggressive",  "off" and still the same thing.

Any help?

Hi there,

I'm new to this so any advice would be really appreciated.

I also upgraded to NIS 2013 on 5th Sept.  On start up this morning I found the NIS 2013 icon took a minute or so to load and had a red cross. Once the internet icon in the system tray appeared the red cross turned to a green tick.

Is this normal?  Is my PC still protected during the time the red cross is showing or do I need to alter any settings?

Thanks

Hi Shep1,

NIS 2013 is just fresh out of beta and in it's first week of release. That being said, there are some things to check.

Concerning the red x at startup, that shouldn't be happening. Do you have any other anti-virus software on your system? Are there any stand alone products that run, scan or monitor in real time? Usually paid products. These will not be compatible with NIS. If there are, they would need to be uninstalled, because they would be conflicting with NIS at startup and NIS in general.

Also, run Norton Autofix. Support > Get Support and let it check your installation. It can fix things it may find.

Run liveupdate manually until there are no updates left, rebooting as many times as prompted ... see images below. After checking for updates and even if no reboot is required, restart the computer anyway and watch the tray icons. If still starting out with a red x or fixed by starting with the green check, report back and let us know.

You mentioned your settings. If you have never changed or adjusted your settings, they at the least should be at the default level for all categories, which provides adequate protection.

Hi Ed

Thanks for the advice.  I think things may be OK now - that said I want to wait and recheck tomorrow.

I don't have any other anti virus software and NIS is the only anti virus software I've ever had. I have manually run live update until there are none required, and also run the Norton Autofix which says everything is OK. When I restart I get the green ticked NIS icon straight away. So all seems good.

Just to be sure though - I want to check what happens overnight as my PC is usually off for around 12 hours or more at times, so I guess the live update may be 'out of date' when I restart tomorrow.

I'll let you know what happens in the morning - and thanks again for your support.

Just to add my two cents - this is what I am encountering with my NIS 2013 installations:

Settings > Computer > Real Time Protection

Enable boot time - Set to Normal on install of NIS 2013

The Default setting is OFF per help and is changed to OFF when Use Default Settings is selected.

Remove Risks if I Am Away - Set to Always on install of NIS 2013 and changed to High Certainty Only when Use Default Settings is selected

Upon boot up on Vista SP 2 (32 bit), Norton Icon appears in tray first thing with setting on Normal - change to OFF and Restart, Norton Icon appears in tray (a bit later), but prior to internet connection icon.

In Win 7 (64 bit), same settings are used for initial installation, same results with Use Defaults for that Section - however there is still the extra long delay with the Norton Icon in the system tray as others are experienciing.

FWIW, I am still running NSS (clone of N 360) version 6 on another Win 7 (64 bit) system and the Norton Tray Icon is 'johnny on the spot".   Boot Time Protection is set to Off (Default).

Anyone else notice anything else that was changed betwwen the Help information, the default settings and the actual settings in NIS 2013 when it is installed?

i am using Win7 (x64) and it takes too long for icon to load. Even changing Boot Time protection settings didn't help

I too see the red X briefly in the system tray icon.

I just got off with Technical Support and was told that this was a known issue after they remote into my computer and checked everything else.

The situation I have on two Windows 7 sp1 64 bit computers is that the Norton icon displays 50-60 seconds after the screen is shown.  Boot time is set to normal. Should the boot time be set to aggressive or is this delay OK because NIS is working in the background on the 2013 version.

Hi again

After yesterdays red cross on system tray icon I promised to post what happened today.

On start up this morning (PC off 8 hours) the NIS 2013 icon appeared green ticked straight away in the system tray.  As I've read the above posts I checked my settings - which I haven't altered - and Enable Boot time Protetion is off.

I'm on Windows XP SP3.

I guess this shows it's working now - or at least for today....

Incidently, after start up this morning and because the live update hadn't been run for 8 hours I manually ran it. It failed to apply all of the updates and took 3 goes to sucessfully complete.

Any one know if this is normal? Or should I ask in another thread?  Sorry I'm very new to posting.

Thanks for all your help.

Shep1

I received a new hard drive today and reinstalled NIS. Didn't know that it would be NIS2013.

Upon boot-up, the icon in the bottom right system tray shows a red X for a few minutes-then changes to green.

I just got off with Technical Support and they remote in. Checked everything and was fine.

Was told that this is a known issue and it would be escalated.

Is anyone else experiencing this or can anyone from Norton confirm that this is a known documented issue?

Hi Shep1,

This happens from time to time. It is generally server related. There is nothing to worry about. The general rule is, when you see you have some failed updates, try again later. Just make sure your pulse updates are getting through during a period of failed updates. Then you're protected.

To see an example of liveupdate failing on certain updates, Click Here to see a thread from last month. There was around an eight hour period when some of the updates weren't downloading. One thing that remained consistent throughout, was that pulse updates continued to download, keeping users protected.

Click Here to see what a group of updates look like when failing to download. They look more frightening than what they really are, because everything is in red, when in these cases it's usually server related.

I had a couple of failed Activity Map updates earlier today, but that straightened out right away.

I am experiencing the same here. NIS 2013 was installed as an upgrade on two systems with SSDs. The icon in the systray takes a couple of minutes to appear on both systems.

Hi again Ed

Thanks so much for explaining that -  I really appreciate your help.

Hi Shep1,

More than glad to be of some help.

Ed

Hello,

I have recently upgraded to NIS 2013 and I also have the Tray Icon taking its sweet time to load issue. NIS 2012 never did this. I installed NIS 2013 over NIS 2012. I have Win 7 Home Premium 64-Bit SP1 + all avaliable Windows Updates applied. I also have 2 SSD drives. They are in a RAID-0 Array. I don't know if that matters at all, but someone else mentioned the SSD thing above my post. I have no other security software installed.

Can someone from Norton look into this problem or provide insight why the behavior change in NIS 2013. I am more then willing to help with troubleshooting or providing logs or any other info needed to track down this issue, if it truely is an issue. :smileyhappy:

Thanks!

Keep up the great work Norton!

I'm having the same problem as others on this message thread.  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  When I was using Internet Security 2012, the system tray icon loaded right away upon boot up.  Now, with Internet Security 2013, the system tray icon requires 2-3 minutes to load upon boot up.  Also, the first time that I try to open Norton following boot-up, IS 2013 takes 3-4 minutes to open.  After that, it opens normally, until I shut down the computer.  Then, the cycle begins all over once again.

Hi Pvmikey,

There have been three or four other posts on this matter. One of the best explanations I found was by Bombastus in a post labled  NIS 2013 Icon.  Search for that post from a few days ago and it should answer your question.  My Windows 7 64 bit computer takes 60 seconds to load the second service you'll read about. I don't look at it as much of a problem anymore if that helps.  Take Care.

I report exactly the same issue/bug

Icon appear after 2-3 minutes. Before I have 2012, removed with NRT and did clean install. Everything was okay untill Norton apply some kind of patch via LU

Dear Symantec,

Is there any official word from you regarding this? I see volunteers replying but it's happening on 3 of my PC's.
