Ok, it’s just ubermax up there made out like it was a phishing situation. I really don’t know much about that sort of thing so I’m concerned we may’ve been scammed or something.
Phishing requires some action on the user's part, such as clicking a link and entering information on a website. Without more clarity about what actually happened, it is hard to know if what your father saw was even connected with anything shown in the Norton logs. It probably was just some kind of update.

Hello. This morning I noticed an entry in security history that mentions that Norton Autofix was activated while my father was logged on. I asked him about it and he said it looked like an update or something was available through Norton. He activated it and it must've been connected to Autofix somehow. I know this sounds weird. I didn't see any of it myself, so I don't know exactly what happened. I checked the results and ran it myself and there appeared to be no issues with the program. Does anyone know what this is or if there's a problem? Thanks!
Norton Autofix should run automatically if Norton Internet Security (NIS) encounters an 'internal program error' (compare the date/time stamps for the Norton Autofix entry and the internal program error entry listed in the Security History shown below):
The example shown above is NIS 2012 product behaviour captured during the NIS 2012 product beta testing cycle. Product behaviour like this typically doesn't change between the beta and released versions of the product.
Given that, I'd suggest checking your Security History for a similar scenario to the one listed above:
- Open NIS > Advanced > History.
- Select 'Norton Error Reporting' in the 'Show' dropdown box.
- Locate the Norton Autofix entry that you mentioned above. Look for a 'Medium' severity entry like the one above that occurred immediately prior to the Norton Autofix entry.
Please review your Security History as per the instructions above and let us know the outcome.
Thanks
That information is no longer available. I had uninstalled and reinstalled NIS shortly after that incident had occured and it took all the history prior to that moment with it. But I check the security history pretty regularly. If something weird like that were to have come up, I would've noticed it. Sorry about that. Does this help at all?
Hi,
You have recently posted a thread in "Tech Outpost" section, where you have clearly described a BSOD.
BSOD, doesn't occur because the OS is not at good mood or because the weather is rainy.
There is clearly a problem with some Windows files and troubleshooting can be a tedious task.
I asked you to try to reinstall the OS as this could fix most of the problems.
You can reinstall NIS about 20 times a day, this WILL NOT HELP.
That's probably the reason why you have problems also with NIS, (Autofix running by itself etc), but in my opinion you do not want to listen.
So, be my guest and ask to the community a new question every 2 days.
Hope this helps your understanding.
Kind regards,
I have been having the same issue. I went to "get support" because of an error condition reported in my NIS history. Auto fix reported fixing an installation error. I re booted and ran "get support" again, and auto fix again reported fixing an installation error again. As long as I do not re boot the computer, get support/auto fix doesn't find anything wrong after fixing the installation error, however the installation error will come up again after every re boot. I have Uninstalled and reinstalled NIS using both the Norton R+R tool and then using the control panel and NRT method and the issue still exists. I am running NIS 20.4.0.40, Windows 7 64 bit SP1.
At present the only 20.4.0.40 version product I have installed is Norton Securtiy Suite (a clone of N 360) and I am experiencing the exact same behavior.
I have seen this before, it was changing the NVP version for FF 24. I checked that again and this is still happening.
So in answer to what it is changing - it is the NVP version - which gets changed back after a reboot and thus running Get Support - changes it again.
As stated in the above link - Norton has been notified and is aware of it, but I havenot heard anything more fromt hem - I will add this thread to their list of threads that this is occurring on.
<edit> I have just tested this on version 21.1.0.18 and do not see this behavior, so the upgrade should correct the problem. I say this knowing that there are some users who do not desire to upgrade at present time - but it is a fix.
Dave20 wrote:When I run "get support," Norton autofix is "repairing" something everytime I reboot the PC. The support says "no problem" for the duration of the session but rebooting it forces it to "repair" something if I run "get support." It says "installation repair."
I am seeing the exact same thing with latest version of NIS 2014. This bug has existed in the past not to long ago. It has returned.
Sorry FattiesGoneWild - I do not see this issue with NIS v 21.1.0.18 on Win 7 as I stated above.
I am on Windows 8.1 64 bit. That might be why you are not seeing it?
Hi,
I have a theory about this as it happens on 2 of my 3 pc's which have something in common.
Some network adapters are intentionnally disabled by me.
On my XP system I have the ethernet adapter disabled and on my W7 X64 where also the wi-fi adapter is in use I have disabled the Microsoft wi-fi miniport adapter as it gave me DHCP errors in Event Viewer.
When I open the NIS GUI, NIS detects those adapters, even if disabled, that's maybe why it attempts to fix the disabled items upon reboot or cold start when I'm running Autofix.
I haven't had the time yet to do additional troubleshooting to support further my theory but I'm just sharing my thoughts.
Otherwise I think that these Autofix results can be safely ignored as the product works properly.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Well I have no adapters disabled. But something is definitely amiss.
I was getting the same thing as installtion fix, but since downloading the 21.1.0,18 patch it stopped. Now I get the no issues found.
Hi to all,
As long as the product works correctly, it's more an annoyance than an issue.
However, it would be nice if it could be fixed....
Regards,
I done a clean install of 8.1 and now not seeing the issue.
Thanks for the feedback!
I have this same issue - every time I reboot or log out and then back in, Autofix says it repairs the installation. I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit, Xfinity NIS 20.4.0.40. Norton seems to be running okay even without the repair. Hope that is the case.
I am running Windows XP Home SP3 and NIS 19.9.1.14 and am also getting exactly the same issue.
After ever reboot, if I run 'Get Support' then Norton Autofix reports that it has repaired the installation and has fixed 1 issue.
Copy to clipboard from the Autofix result window gives:-
Norton Internet Security
19.9.1.14
Error: 0, 0
Microsoft Windows XP
2600.xpsp_sp3_qfe.130704-0421
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success
If I run 'Get Support' a second time right after the first, then Norton Autofix finds nothing and it completes with no problems.
Surely, this is something that Norton should sort out as it appears to be an issue no matter which version of NIS and Windows is running.
Well now I have no Norton on my computer. Have restarting my computer yesterday, Norton wouldn't allow the Smart Firewall to be turned on. The Fix It option didn't work and neither did going in manually and turning it on. Also had issues with incoming and outgoing email but got those to work eventually. Was online with support for over an hour last night and had to completely remove Norton and was told that since my version is from Comcast and I have Windows 8.1, that I'll need to wait until version 21.1 is available through Cocmast. I'm sick of all these Norton and Windows issues and for now I'm just using Windows Defender and Firewall.
Hi GRBU2,
The other alternative for Comcast users is to remove NSS, run the NRT and install thtikof trial of N 360 until NSS is updated to version 21.
