Norton Insight constantly running

Every day Insight is running and while this happens there's very high disk uses on C.  When I move the mouse it takes half an hour to stop.  Even if I manually run Insight and let it complete (which can take an hour or more) it still runs again a couple of days later.  I can't use my desktop when it's running (to slooow) .  I even have trouble getting onto this forum to complain because Insight won't leave C drive along.  Does this really need to run every single day??!!  Can I just turn it off.  I would like to use this computer once and while.

I windows 10 - latest updates and driver updates.  C drive is 1TB WD.  Intel I7, 32gig RAM

I have asked again for some help. Let's hope it works this time.

Yes and no.

Yes - still having the same prob with Insight and

no - noone from Norton has contacted me.

OK. Still on the old 360. Wait for the escalation.

Hi antmck2011:

Just checking in.  Are you still having problems with Norton Insight continuing to run when your system comes out of idle mode, and did anyone from Norton ever contact you?

Thanks for the help.  Insight's been driving me nuts.  It runs so often using my desktop is next to impossible.  I'm thinking of formatting the HD and reinstalling Windows, but that's take forever setting everything up again.  For now I'll wait and see.

Hi antmck2011:

Thanks for the additional information, and sorry I can't provide any further assistance.  I've reported similar issues with nortonsecurity.exe occasionally thrashing my hard drive when I take my system out of idle / sleep mode in multiple threads - see my posts in Christine_208's December 2018 thread Automatic LiveUpdate Thrashing HDD for one example - and I haven't found a solution yet.

I've even tried a clean re-install of Norton Security, which provides a deeper wipe of your current Norton installation than running the Norton Remove and Reinstall (NRnR) tool in "regular" mode, but that hasn't helped.  It just seems like Norton is having problems recognizing when my system goes in or out of idle mode and isn't correctly pausing Norton background tasks (Status = Canceled) when my system comes out of idle / sleep mode.  If you're desperate and would like to try a clean re-install see the instructions I posted <here> for Norton Security Premium.  The links for the full offline installers for both N360 and N360 Premium are below (see STEP # 2 of the instructions), or you can just re-install using the Download button in your online Norton Account (see STEP # 5) to ensure you're reinstalling the correct product.  Just be aware that a clean reinstall will wipe all your current configuration settings and remove other Norton products installed on your computer like Norton Utilities, Norton Family, Norton Ghost, etc.

N360 (standard) : https://www.norton.com/latestn360   (comes with 2 GB offline storage)
N360 Premium :   https://www.norton.com/latestn360p (comes with 25 GB offline storage)

Hopefully one of the Norton employees will respond to Guru peterweb's request for escalated support before you need to try a clean reinstall.

antmck2011:
Version 22.16.4.15

Hi antmck2011:

A few other questions while you're waiting for assistance form a Norton employee.  What is your Win 10 version and build (see the How-to Geek article How to Find Out Which Build and Version of Windows 10 You Have)? When you view your main N360 interface does it looks like the image posted <here> of the "new" N360  (i.e., with Norton Secure VPN listed as a component).  The current beta version of the "new" N360 is also v22.16.4.15 so it's still possible you were one of the users randomly selected to beta test this product.

Also, do you have any other security software that loads at Windows startup and runs in real-time protection mode at the same time as Norton?  I've had issues in the past where the Web Protection module of Malwarebytes Premium v3.x (the paid version with real-time protection) interfered with my Norton tasks, but in my case it was usually Automatic LiveUpdates and Download Insight that frequently failed when Norton was unable to connect to the backend Norton servers in the "cloud" and download the latest definition updates.  The image below shows one of my Automatic LiveUpdates eventually failing after about 80 min. when my MB Premium v3.2.2 Web Protection module was enabled.

I know how to temporarily turn off the Download Insight feature (Settings | Firewall | Intrusion and Browser Protection | Download Intelligence) that checks the safety of individual executable files as they are being downloaded from the internet, but as far as I know there is no way to disable the automated background Norton Insight task that runs during system idles and automatically updates (upgrades or downgrades) the reputation / trust rating of newer executables that might be installed on your computer.  See the support article Norton Insight for more information, which states "Norton Insight allows the smart scanning of files on your computer. It improves the performance of Norton scans by letting you scan fewer files without compromising the security of your computer.". On my old Vista SP2 machine this background Norton Insight task usually runs once a day and takes under 5 min to run to completion as long as my system remains in idle mode.

Version 22.16.4.15

Yes and no. See this thread.   https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/have-you-seen-new-offerings-nortoncom-it%E2%80%99s-beta-test

If you have not seen a recent change to your product you are probably still on the old 360. It is just that recently, problems with 360 seem to be related to the new, beta version.

What is the version of your Norton product?  Click on Help - About.

I have still escalated the thread anyway, as you are seeing some strange behaviour.

New?  N360 has been around for years.  In fact I don't think it's sold any more.  Just waiting until my current subscription runs out then I'll change to the new version.

From your image, I see you are using the new 360 product. We have no experience with this yet, so I'll escalate your thread.

I tried this and it didn't fix the problem.

Insight is running again!.  I dared to leave it alone for 5 mins.  Now that I dared to move the move to wake up PC Insight says "stopping"...  half an hour later...  Do I really need Insight at all??!!

You could, but you would be reducing the protection you installed Norton to provide.

I would suggest that you need a fresh install of your Norton product. Something may have gotten out of whack.  Using a Windows admin account, download and run the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from    www.norton.com/nrnr   Be sure you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Tried a restart.  Tried turning off fast startup - neither worked.  Can I just turn Insight off?

Have you restarted your computer? Not Shutdown and Start again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here.
