Norton Internet Security 2011 18.1.0.37 XP Bug

On Windows XP Professional there is a bug similiar to the one that plagued NIS 2010. Where in NIS causes the screen saver/monitor stand by to stop.

Once the Full System Scan completes on Windows XP Professional. The screen save/monitor stand by is off. With NIS 2010 this was caused by the systray toast pop-up indicating an Idle Time Scan.

This doesn't not occur on Windows 7 64 bit.

I’ve notified the Norton staffs about this problem. Hopefully they will respond soon. By the way, I think screen savers are useless nowadays. Even with the 7 pc, I’ve set the screensaver to come on after an hour of inactivity. Plus on my computer, the screensaver rarely activates cause I’m always using the pc and I turn it off when I don’t

are all your settings at the default?

when you say that the screensaver and standby are off, are you saying that the settings are changed to turn them off? or are you saying that the screensaver simply doesn't come on while your doing a full scan? what about after the scan if done? what is the timeout on your screensaver?

All of my settings are default and the same on both XP Pro and 7.

I am saying that after the Full System Scan is done. The monitor comes out of stand by. Which isn't normal and does not occur on Windows 7 only XP Pro. It is because of NIS 2011 because it only occurs when using NIS 2011.

My screen saver is set to 5 mins. My stand by time is 15 mins.

NIS 2011 brings my monitor out of stand by.

is the nis settings at default?

if you wait 15 minutes after your scan is complete does it go back in to standby? what about the screensaver after 5?

does nis detect anything during the scan?

Yes the NIS settings are default.

I have no idea if it goes back. It probably does. But it comes out of stand by immediately after the scan.

No NIS doesn't detect anything.

This is not Malware or Viruses.

This is a bug in NIS 2011. It only started happening after I installed NIS 2011 and only on XP.

it doesn't seem like a bug. that other issue you were talking about in your first post that its similar to was that the screensaver and sleep would never work because the toaster would bring it out of sleep.

if it goes back in to screensaver afterwards i would think this is intentional. afterall when the scan is done its letting you know by alerting you and it comes out of screensaver. if youre not there, screensaver will go on again. but what about people who are doing a full scan and then going on their couch and watching tv and eating chips? they can just go and glance at the computer and wait for the results to come up.

i don't really see this to be a problem but then again i might be alone in this.

if the screensaver comes back on after it goes off - then i guess whatever ;]

just my opinion.

i also like bbq chips. i would be eating those while waiting. lol!

It is a bug. It doesn't happen on Windows 7. If it wasn't a bug it would happen on both XP and 7. This is definitely not an alert feature to tell you that the scan is finished.

Hi SGFC,

It would be great if you can gather log files for this issue.

Here is how you can collect debug logs:

1) Visit the below site:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080507162141EN

2) Make one change to the steps listed:

Step 2.6: Check all the advanced options

3) In the end, no files will be sent to Symantec automatically. You will be shown the location of the logs after you complete the form after hitting the "finish" button.

Please let me know once you collect the log files. I will help you in uploading them.

Thanks!

Vineeth

Hi vaneeth. Page not found.

Thank you pointing it out.

Hi! All,

Please pardon the interruption.  I would like to ask SGFC some questions.

SGFC, do you know what graphics type you have? (Intergrated/Discrete)

Do you know who made it? (Intel, AMD-ATI, nVidia)

Can you provide the name of your monitor's manufacturer?

I think I might have some helpful information but I will need the above information from you; so that I can be sure you get accurate help.

Hi SGFC,

It would be great if you can gather the log files and upload as requested. That will help us to identify the root cause of the problem. If you no longer face this problem, please let me know.

Thanks!

Sheen.

I still face it and only on XP Pro 32 bit.

What logs do you need and where do I send them?

I believe it is discrete (video card) not a onboard type.

Sapphire ATI HD 3850

Samsung SyncMaster 2494

The funny thing is that it doesn't happen on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Just Windows XP Pro 32 bit.

Same versions of Catalyst Control Center (ATI software).

Hi SGFC,

Please collect the logs as requested by Vineeth in this post.

I totally missed that post. I will get right on it.

Okay I did it.

Sadly it failed the first time. So I tried a second time.

What happens;

I set it to do a full system scan, I leave the PC, I come back when it's done (approx. 10 minutes), Instead of the computer monitor being in power saving mode, It's in screen saver mode.

The monitor should go to standby/sleep in 15 minutes. But instead stays on screen saver mode. Because NIS interrupts it and it never gets to standby/sleep.

Again this does not happen on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. If it was my hardware, video card software or drivers. It should logically happen on both OS's. ATI doesn't have OS specific drivers. It has OS specific installers yes.

I tried to contact you Vineeth. But apparently PM options are off on this forum.

I have log files stored in My Documents. I misunderstood and followed the links instructions. But apparently you want me upload them elsewhere.

Thanks a lot, SGFC.

I tried to send you a PM. Seems to have issues with PM. The location of the log file is: C:\Documents and Settings\<Currently logged in User>\My Documents\Symantec\ErrLogs\

Once the problem with Private Message is solved, I will send you the instructions to upload the log files. I am not in a position to post that instructions on forum.

Thanks!
