Norton internet security inactive

I've got a current Norton subscription but I have had a red cross on my icon, antivirus, antispyware, sonar protection and email protection switched off each time I reboot and when I try to fix a message that my antivirus is inactive.

Norton want me to pay to remove what they term 'a windows virus'. They say they've had many calls about this.

A windows scan tells me its Win32/Alureon.H.

How can I fix it?

Will Norton extend my contract for the period that my NAV is inactive?

Win32/Alureon.H.,   is something similar to TDL3, 3+  2010 -2011  has appeared or come back with modifications

Please go to Malware Removal boards for removal.

12.01.03  I had the Norton internet security inactive problem yesterday. I did the following to overcome the problem and it worked my Norton is now up and running.

1 Get Norton Internet Security up on your desk top screen.

2 Select support on the top right hand corner

3 Select get support

4 Open support website

5 Select My product isn't starting or working on my computer

6 Download Norton Remove and Install file, this will appear on your desk top screen

7 Click on this file to activate and open up file. I found this file in My Documents, I right clicked on the file to create a short cut.

8 After creating a shortcut in the bottom right of the task bar the installation started to remove my existing Norton and Reinstall a working version which is the latest. The whole process of Remove and Install took about an hour.

I hope this helps you with your problem and gets you up and running again.

my reply date is incorrect it should be 12.01.13

This thread also shows my point. hahaha

What has safe Mode got to do with dealing with what should be TDL patched files??

What has trying to fix Norton on a possible rooted system, got to do with what should be TDL patched files??  The infection can be the cause of Nortons problems like back in TDL2, 2+ days.

Your reply date for this forum is correct, it is the fact you are not realising the forum settings for where ever, yes the UK, AU and NZ have the day and month the other way around, but that is not the settings.

I think my machine is affected by this problem.  The Norton emblem in the tray has a red X on it, and Windows says the Antivirus is turned off.  I popped the hood on the Norton and tried to switch it back on and it keeps showing it turned off.  I tried restarting the computer, but the problem persists.

I tried the above solution and the Remove and Install utility tells me I need to remove NIS manually.  I'm wondering after I remove NIS manually, will it allow  me to download the updated version?  Why can't Norton just put this fix in Live Update?

Users have to get rid of the rootkit

Thanks everybody for your help, I seem to have resolved the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling NIS.

My everlasting question is why doesn't Norton work or come up with a quick fix?

Why should users have (to quote Quads) 'get rid of the rootkit'?

I don't know or really want to know what that means.(I might read it if someone tells me)

Lets get a life and something that works, Apple?

How did you find that you had Win32/Alureon.H?

if you do have that on your system, reinstalling NIS is not going to be a long time solution. Things may be OK for now, but the infection will raise it's head again.

Hi Whyme,  I'm also wondering how you determined that Alureon was the culprit.  I'm wondering if that's the same bug that is on my system.  It appears they bad guys got one past NIS.

Win32/Alureon.H = MSE / MRT / Windows Defender detection name

Tidserv is back? Hm.. interesting

Hi Guys,

I got the Alueron.H info. from a scan which windows took me into.

Never been there before (and don't want to again!)

I hope that my problem is fixed permanently, a Norton full system scan didn't find anything, it starts off checking win32 files.

Why is this associated with tidserv?

I paid Norton to have this removed at the start of my subscription period.

Because different AV vendors give this trojan different name-alliases.

Symantec: Backdoor.Tidserv,

Microsoft: Alureon,

Kaspersky: TDSS,

ESET: Olmarik,

 etc.

Tidserv is not back, it is always around.  Like Zeroaccess is not back it is always around.  Not interesting when yiu keep up with it all.

Hmm, I'm having similar problems as well (started a thread about it in fact) but Microsoft's Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool was clean and doing a scan via Norton in Safe Mode didn't come up with anything either.
