Norton safe web not working correctly

whenever I do a google search the little icons next to each resuly are either not there or all question marks. If I click on the website the little icon in the norton toolbar dispays green. If I click on see full report I can not get to the safe web website? This is the safe web that came with the safe search update. I am running vista and have the latest version of norton.

I have the same.I think the safeweb site is down

The Safe Web service was down for a short while due to a network/hardware problem. This affected both the rating service, which provides the data for the green/red icons and the website. It was restored yesterday.

I have been having a lot of the same issues lately, either all question marks or no marks.  At this moment I have something new.  I have both IE8 and firefox on the same PC.   The marks are working properly on IE8 and no marks at all on firefox.  If it were the safe web server at fault is this possible?   Does firefox get served up from a different server than does IE8?   I wish I had a better understanding of the plumbing here.

tfishman,

Are you blocking scripting on Google pages in Firefox or using NoScript?  The Norton Safe Web icons will not appear if scripting is disabled on your search pages.

I am in fact using no script but I noticed where someone mentioned that it can interfere so I disabled it a couple of hrs ago, reloaded firefox, tried firefox using google search and still no safe web marks.

Also, until today, noscript, firefox, and safe web were working just fine together.

Here is some more info.  Apparently it is only firefox and google that has stopped working.  I just tried firefox with yahoo and MSN search and the web safe marks are there and working.

Clear the cache in Firefox and restart it.  That should clear any cobwebs.

Here is something else that is very interesting.  Web safe is working with firefox when I use the firefox default homepage  which is:

http://en-US.start2.mozilla.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

When I search using www.google.com as my homepage it doesnt work - at least not any more.  I really I think it was working prior to today.

So what is so different about the firefox default google homepage from just www.google.com with regard to web safe?

clearing the cach and restarting firefox apparently doesnt fix it in this case.  It still is working from almost all browsers except www.google.com.  It works form the firefox default searchpage which is a firefox personalized version of googlecom.

very strange.

Hey, you're right!  I just tried this myself and confirmed what you are seeing.  I don't know what is going on, but you can rest easy because it's not just you.

Thanks for confirming sendofjive - this really had me scratching my head!

Hey u right i just tried it too doesn't work with google as ur homepages...wow

i have yahoo as my homepage so i have no probs... but that is weird.  does norton not like google? lol

and i don't have any addons at all except adblocker and noscript.

Is everybody on Vista on this thread?  I’m running XP3, IE7, scripting enabled with NoScript and can’t reproduce the issue.  Web safe works in Google, Yahoo and IE.

delphinium,

Since you are on XP, if you have Firefox 3.0.8 installed, go to www.Google.com and search for something (I choose spyware software) and press enter.  Do you see the little green check marks / shopping cart next to the entries?

I have no problem with IE but with Firefox there is.  See if you can confirm this.

I’m running XP SP3 with NoScript on Firefox, with scripting allowed for Google.  Google searches using the Firefox search box result in pages that  have the Norton Safe Web icon next to the returned links, while going to www.google.com and doing a search brings up pages with no icons.  One possible variable is that today I updated to Firefox 3.0.9 from 3.0.8.  I wouldn’t think the update would affect Norton Safe Web, but who knows?  More likely, the issue has to do with how Symantec sets up Safe Web to work with Google.

My version is 3.0.8 so it’s not the version of FF.  Thanks for confirming that Vista is not the problem also.  I have the same results as others and all of my browsers are running in default settings (I find it better to test that way).  My gut says that this is Google sending the results from their home page in a different manner than from the search boxes or tool bars.  This is far from over though.

Now that is a tricky business.  I am on FF 3.08 and Google is my home page.  I have check marks everywhere if I use it normally.  If as Dbrisendine suggested, I type in www.google.com, I get no check marks.  That makes no sense.

Tfishman, SendofJive, Cooloutac and others.

Thanks for reporting this issue. This is not related to outage we had earlier today and it looks like something that happened as a result of change made by google. We are looking at it right now.

Thanks

For those of you who didnt catch it, a workaround to use google in firefox for now is to use the firefox default google page:
