Norton Security Scan Popup

I would like to know how to remove this malware that Norton snuck onto my computer.

It pops up continuously asking me to scan and install Norton products and does not offer a way to remove it. I have gone into my control panel and removed all symatec files and it reinstalls itself.

I don't appreciate a company that is supposed to protect my computer from annoying popups and malware is instead using them to push its products on me.

In the past i thought very highly of Norton and recommended them to everyone i knew. Never again.

Hi RoninStorm,

You can remove this via Windows Add/Remove Programs.

If it reinstalls itself, follow the instructions posted in this KB article:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090106142440EN&ln=en_US

What happened is that you just click next.next, next when you recently installed something such as Adobe Shockwave or Google Eartth. Norton Security scan is packaged with these programs and if you do not uncheck the option to install them then they will automaticlly be installed. Symantec is not to blame cause there are several products that install add ons such as the "Asktoolbar".

never seen a legitimate or worthwhile product that needed to piggyback on the install of other programs.

that just lowers Norton to the level of the yahoo toolbar in my opinion.

Google toolbar, Yahoo toolbar??

There is nothing wrong with Yahoo Toolbar, Google Toolbar, Ask Toolbar or any of those programs. Its up to the user that is installing the program to carefully read everything before installing. Its like signing a contract with actually reading it. No one signs a mortgage with out reading the fine print.

no one signs a mortgage without reading it,true, but that mortgage isn't piggybacked onto a video game purchase either.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with those toolbars, i'm just saying i expected better from a company that makes a living protecting your computer from such things.

Well tons of companies do it. As in matter of fact McAfee installs McAfee Security Scan along with Adobe Flash Player.

This program has angered me time and time again.

I installed nothing in the last two weeks.  Earlier today it installs ITSELF.

It did not piggyback from anything else.  It downloaded itself, and installed itself, without my premission.

This needs to stop.

Norton needs to stop this.

I never thought bad of Norton before.

Because of this program I will never, ever use Norton software again.

And trust me, I'm not the only one.

Stop such cheap and unjustified tactics.

Tactics which should not be legal.

You should not be allowed to download a program and install it onto somebody's computer without their permission.

Just stop it.

ArckAngel,

Have you followed the procedure from the post above?

Norton Security Scan does not install itself without permission. Would you care to describe what symptoms you are seeing?

Thanks

Allen

Yes, yes it does.

It down loaded itself, and installed itself without my permission.

That's enraging.

Hi ArckAngel,

Does the following look familiar?

I don't think Symantec picked your computer out of the whole world to download and install Norton Security Scan without anything to prompt it.

If you are having a problem you would like assistance with, please start a new thread and we can help out.

Thanks very much

Allen

Hi ArckAngel,

You did not respond to AllenM's earlier question as to whether you followed the instructions in the link I posted to prevent Norton Security Scan from reinstalling itself automatically.

Please, don't insult my intelligence. Of course I didn't go to a Norton site, and click on a big Download button.  Spyware and malware install themselves on computers all the time.  And that's what Norton Security Scan is.

SendOfJive:

I followed your preventative measures, however none of them were necessary.

I am having the same exact issue.  I have Windows 7 64-bit.  This 'Norton Security Scan' must have come with my computer when I purchased it a few months ago.

I cannot get this uninstalled.  I have tried uninstalling it with safe mode, without safe mode.  I have tried uninstalling it with Windows uninstaller.  I have tried using the Norton removal tool.  I am at my wit's end!  The other computer in this household was also purchased recently with Windows 7 64-bit, and has the same problem.  Now, I try to uninstall it with the Windows uninstaller, and it just hangs.  Doesn't do anything.  Nice.

I have never had a piece of software SO infuriating!  I don't care if it is 'free'.  I don't want it on my laptop.  I didn't ask for it, and I have been able to uninstall the rest of the bloatware very easily.

I will never, ever use Norton for anything, ever again.  Thanks, Norton!  You made it easier to choose by eliminating yourself.  I don't need software pushed on me.

And, for the record, even if some of these users in this forum *did* install it unknowingly (through other installs) and they *didn't* read the instructions - that doesn't mean they have to suffer with this crappy software the rest of the laptop's / computer's life!  There should be a clear and easy uninstall route.  This is rediculous.

Hmm... I think this basic search (and the typical search strings it pulls up) are indicative of the general public's thoughts on Norton Security Scan.

Hi Lizard,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

If Norton Security Scan came with your computer I am not sure why this is Symantec's fault, they did not install it. The laptop vendor did....

Anyway, did you follow the instructions in an earlier post using the following link to uninstall Norton Security Scan?

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090106142440EN&ln=en_US

And as it has been mentioned before Symantec is not even close to the only ones where other software is piggy-backed with some program. That is very common practice.

I'm not exactly crazy about this practice either but it is quite common and I simply uncheck any software I don't want on my computer.

Best wishes.

Allen

Thank you for the welcome, Allen.

My point is not that it is hard to uncheck a box, nor that it is anyone's fault if software is installed by default by a laptop vendor.

My point is - the software should easily uninstall!  It does not.  It fails each time, the uninstall tool from Symantec fails.  Everything fails.  It is irritating.

I was able to remove all other software that I deemed unnecessary.  Why is Symantec being so stubborn with this Norton Security Scan?

Hello lizard

Have you tried this link to remove the scan?

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100322171108EN

Please let us know if this one works ok. And yes, it should uninstall easily, I agree. Thanks.

No, that still did not work, even after a reboot.  I have 2.9.  It says it only works from 2.0 - 2.2.

This is so frustrating.
