Norton360 Makes Keyboard unusable -- constantly grabs focus

Issue abstract:

The long term bug often reported here where Norton360 constantly grabs keyboard focus has escalated to the point of making Windows 11 systems completely unusable with update 25.9.10453 (build 25.9.10453.0).

Detailed description:

The latest update includes a firewall rule that logs ALL windows networking in traffic specifically for mdns. Each time this event is logged the Norton background service grabs keyboard focus. That makes basically every other Windows application unusable on a private network.

  • Repairing Norton installation does NOT correct.
  • Completely removing and re-installing Norton 360 works for about a week but ultimately fails again.
  • Adding a new firewall rule to accept UDP 135-139 WITHOUT logging restores previous Norton 360 behavior of being occasionally annoying (only 3 loss of focus events while typing this message).
  • Launching the Norton360 app and minimizing it completely resolves issue.
  • Completely removing Norton360 is the most often recommended solution which is ironic for this forum. While that works for desktops I really want to keep the VPN and public network lockdown for laptops.

Product & version number:

Norton 360 version 25.9.10453 (build 25.9.10453.0).

OS details:

Windows 11 version 10.0.26100

I believe these are all the same issue but can’t post links in post:
Possibly NllToolsSvc.exe causes loosing focus on a window

@David113 Have you considered that the logging could in fact be generated from another device within your local network? Multicast usage, printers, NAS storage, etc. On UDP port 5353 is what your entries are showing? Change your firewall rule to port 5353 WITHOUT logging and test again.

Hello,

Windows 11 running Norton 360 25.9.10453

Over the last couple of months I noticed that about 30 seconds to a minute or so the app I was in would lose focus for a couple of seconds and then return to the app I was using. I found it annoying, especially if I was typing at the time.

Today the issue became so bad that literally every second Norton 360 would steal focus making the computer unusable. I disabled Norton and the computer behaved normally. Turning Norton back on led to the loss of focus issue immediately. This was repeatable.

Not knowing what else to do I rebooted and since rebooting the computer has behaved normally. Hopefully it will remain that way

I’m getting the exact same issue starting from today! It’s insane. I’ve isolated it down to “NortonUI” for me.. if I open the Norton app, the focus is ok. I can switch to my other windows.. and then randomly, after a non specific time, 1 minute, 5 minutes, it then starts taking focus again. It only started happening recently.

edit: I must say, rebooting doesn’t fix the problem. I’ve also tried “norton repair”.. with no effect. It’s driving me insane and now I’m thinking removing Norton completely.

Update to my previous post.

Unfortunately rebooting was only a temporary fix. Within an hour it was back to Norton 360 taking focus every second or so. The computer was unusable. Temporarily disabling had no affect. Interestingly, even with Norton disabled task manager still showed the 360 suite easily the most active.

I finally uninstalled 360, turned on Windows Security and magically my computer is back to normal.

I hope Norton gets to the bottom of this mess soon.

I’m having the same problem since today.. It makes the system complete useless.

On UDP port 5353

You are correct I misspoke about mdns the issue is with UDP 137 aka netbios name not UDP 5353.

Adding a rule for UDP 135-137 WITHOUT logging is definitely required as a partial fix for the focus grabbing bug.

That is interesting. What I see is that the combination of disabling logging for Windows Networking and having the Norton360 lets things work pretty normally. Perhaps you have a similar problem but a different condition being logged in the security history?

I misspoke it was netbios (135-137) NOT mdns (5353) traffic causing the problem. I thought it was the useless network probing from my router and AP’s causing the issue but it is in fact the connection to my NAS.

At any rate a new rule to allow the traffic WITHOUT logging place above the built-in rule is definitely a necessary but not sufficient change to get keyboard working again.

I have the same issue and it’s maddening as it prevented my daughter from doing her paper.

I would hope Norton would fix this as it’s been happening to me for at least a month, but gone are the days Norton seemed to care…

Den fejl du snakker om er fix I 25.10 Stability fejlen er fix i hotfixen så alt det du er sur over kommer i de næste hotfix eller major men fejl fixes ikke på 5min alt tar tid

Not sure if there is a solution to this? It took me 10 mins to write this message out as it kept stealing focus. I can’t work or function like this so I will uninstall for now, wait a week test and then cancel my subscription as I’ve experienced this for months and only was able to figure out it was Norton causing it using a Focus logger app and see hundreds of hits per day from Norton 360.

Rolling back Norton 360 to earlier version completely fixes the problem of losing focus and as a bonus uses far less CPU.

Which version you rolled to and how? I keep struggling with windows focus grabbed by Norton. Really annoying.

The trouble version was 25.x.x and I rolled back to version 22.x.x

From memory I used a saved installer which just downloaded the old version. I also turned off automatic updates so it would not just upgrade the version again. You just have to visit the BROADCOM norton virus definiitions page and install the updates for either 32 or 64 bit platforms which are posted every Mondsy. Have had no issues at all with focus issues since downgrading.
