Norton360 Makes Keyboard unusable -- constantly grabs focus

You mean that after rolling back to 22 version all virus signatures have to be installed manually?

Seems so, at least if you want to stop Norton from upgrading to newer version all over again. Since allowing automatic updates not only downloads the new virus signatures but also program updates. This is the problem. There does not seem to be a way to maintain the virus database as.a separate action.

For me its super quick and easy to just visit the Broadcomm site and quckly download the correct file and run the executable which then updates the norton version you have
in seconds.

NOTE: Even in newer versions, if you turn of automatic updates you will have to manulally download and install the virus definitions.

Disappointing to say the least that Norton has not fixed this major issue. I have a friend with a new laptop running Windows 11 with the exact same issue as myself (I am still running Windows 10) and like me the only fix was to roll back to previous version of 360

The most effective way to fix the Norton 360 focus-stealing bug is to create a new firewall rule that allows mDNS traffic without logging the events. This bug is caused by Norton logging mDNS (multicast DNS) activity and its background service grabbing keyboard focus for each log entry.

Primary Fix: Modify Firewall Rules
This solution addresses the root cause: the logging of mDNS events.

  1. Open the main Norton 360 application.
  2. Go to Settings → Network → Smart Firewall → Advanced Settings.
  3. Click Configure next to General Rules.
  4. Click Add to create a new rule.
  5. Select Allow and click Next.
  6. Select Connections to and from other computers and click Next.
  7. Select Only the communications and ports listed below. Add the following ports (primarily UDP 5353, but sometimes others like 135-139 are involved in the logging issue):
  • UDP 5353
  • UDP 135-139
  1. Click Next.
  2. Crucially, ensure the option “Create an event log entry” is unchecked. This stops the logging that causes the focus bug.
  3. Give the rule a name (e.g., “Allow mDNS without logging”) and click Finish.
  4. Move the new rule up in the priority list so it takes precedence over the default logging rule.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Alternative Workarounds
If you are unable to modify firewall rules, these workarounds may provide temporary relief:

  • Launch and Minimize Norton: Open the main Norton 360 application window and leave it open but minimized. This seems to prevent the background process from trying to bring the non-existent window to the foreground.
  • Run LiveUpdate and Restart: Ensure your software is fully up to date. Run LiveUpdate multiple times, then perform a full system Restart (not a “Shut Down” and Start Up, as Windows Fast Startup can interfere).
  • Temporarily Disable Smart Firewall: For testing purposes, you can right-click the Norton icon in the system tray and temporarily disable the Smart Firewall to confirm it is the source of the problem.
  • Complete Reinstallation: Using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool (NRnR) can fix the issue for a short period (around a week) before it often reappears.

Many users report this is a persistent bug specific to a recent update, and the firewall rule modification is the only reliable user-side fix until Norton releases an official patch.

AI Mode may make mistakes

With latest updates the firewall rule changes no longer work. It takes longer to start failing but ultimatey does the same damn thing. Norton has been unusable since version 25.

Bait and switch at it’s worse. Previously annoying but functional product has been replaced by something with a similar skin but renders computers it is installed on completely unusable.

Fejl

Tried to apply. No difference. Still stealing focus.

Ja men der er en grund til at den er elendig de tar dem alle sammen som miner og hotfix i mellem 25.12 eller 26.1 sÄ dit problem bliver lÞst hvis du siger det eller hvis de kikker pÄ siden sÄ du er ikke glemt

I’ve installed last version and no result. I give up and uninstalling this.

Thanks for sharing your progress.

Its amazing that, the latest release, once again didn’t deliver. Evidently the issue was able to be replicated by Norton in some manner, that would exclude it being “specific” to certain hardware and its drivers. Conversely, its NOT accounting for other software on systems that can affect A/V functionality. I’m a firm believer that no software can account for so many configurations across such a diverse user base globally. Unfortunately its a lose-lose situation for the end user consumer and Norton alike.

SA

UI Version: 1.0.111 has been released to fix the issue of “Norton360 Makes Keyboard unusable - constantly grabs focus”. Please run Norton LiveUpdate and Restart the system to check if the fix is working.

This issue started for me with the 25.11.10580 (build 25.11.10580.0) update that got pushed with a Nov 11 restart after a Win update. I’m ready to just uninstall so I can work. I’ve lost about an hour trying to chat with support and go through troubleshooting that did not resolve the issue.

I’ve been a Norton customer since the Symantic days going back to 2004 and can’t believe the poor support. The rep takes 3-5 minutes for a simple response. Everyone has an occasional issue with software defects but to be on a chat twice (20 minutes and then 30+ minutes) and get no where is an eye opener. There used to be great support. What happens if I have an actual exploit?

Let me ask i can help you uninstall and wait on my info
I ask to the senior team no bigger then them to ask
it is send on it way i hope they will Lissen

Hello @D-C
Please confirm UI Version: 1.0.111

UI Version: 1.0.111 has been released to fix the issue of “Norton360 Makes Keyboard unusable - constantly grabs focus”. Please run Norton LiveUpdate and Restart the system to check if the fix is working.

Yes 1.0.111 is confirmed. Attempting to attach a screenshot.

Edited by SoulAsylum: Removed the users image that was showing the users product serial number for their personal integrity under PI forum rules. @D-C please repost a screenshot that is redacted without product serials and endpoint ID information.

does it work say so thanks

UPDATE: Stopped wasting time on support and worked the issue a bit. I found some Pi-hole rules that seemed to have helped by will keep an eye on it.

Regex allow: (\.|^)avast\.com$
Exact allow: analytics.ff.avast [dot] com (redundant but added from log)

Still consider this a Norton defect since stealing focus to a hidden UI shouldn’t ever be a thing even if logging is domain blocked.
