Nortonui.exe is using my GPU

Any difference noted if you change to Windows default and restart?

Merk je enig verschil als je overschakelt naar de standaardinstellingen van Windows en opnieuw opstart?

was having problems with high Norton 360 GPU & NortonUI.exe until i turn off Deepfake Protection “auto-scan on supported sites”

@ARP
I will be updating my Windows 11 Pro laptop shortly to see what I get my side. One note is the laptop only has discrete video so I may not see what you are seeing. I’ve been waiting for Microsoft to get their boot certificate fiasco settled and the issues with March/April update bugs.

Have you also tried the suggestion from @Jack99?

SA

@Jack99 AI appears to be the issue your side. AI uses GPU processing more so than CPU in most cases. Thanks for your informational post.

Edited: Has everyone posting had a look at this Norton article?

I just tried that, no luck. I appreciate that you try to help though, im out of options.

The only thing that forces it to use the IGPU is to reboot in eco-mode, but as soon as i swap to standard or optimised it detects the DGPU and forces it to stay on by running nortonui.exe. Turning off the deepfake protection didnt change anything (it barely uses any resources)

Just to add, i forced Norton both in my NVIDIA driver (the first screenshot) and in Windows (the second screenshot) to use the Intel GPU. It still runs on the NVIDIA.

NVIDIA settings

Windows settings

I tried using Copilot to fix this, and according to that the problem is that NortonUI uses WebView2 + Chromium, and that makes my Asus-notebook think that its a GPU app thus loading it on the DGPU, overruling Windows and NVIDIA settings. Due to security, its unable to close it once it starts, thats why the only fix is to fully restart the pc in eco-mode and never booting the DGPU in the first place. Even if i start in eco, as soon as i switch to standard or optimized, the dgpu boots up and Norton is loaded there.

@ARP My best suggestion is running the Norton Support Tool. Have them look at what is happening from their perspective.

Send Norton product debug logs with Norton Support Tool?

Webview 2 indeed causes issues with GPU usage, disable “hardware acceleration” in ALL your browsers and retest. Lets see if that changes things in any way for you.

Update on my issue. I had disabled the scanning of Deepfakes and the problem went away. Today, I had a Windows update after the reboot the problem returned. However, now this is not deepfakes, the only way to prevent the issue was to shut of antivirus. As before, any video I play from youtube is choppy, the responsiveness of my mouse is very bad and the GPU usage by Norton hits 100%. The only way that I seem to be able to run is to disable antivirus.

Just an update - I haven’t seen ‘LiveKernelEvent 141/fault bucket id LKD_0x141_Tdr:6_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys’ errors on my laptop since I upgraded the NVIDIA graphic drivers to latest version. That is not to say I won’t seen it in future, but am certainly not getting it every day like I was previously. So that is an big improvement. Still have NORTONUI.EXE the using the NVIDIA GPU and reading the continuing posts, is not something that can be removed thus far. I did submit logs to NORTON support. With the new GPU drivers and DeepFake protection disabled, I can notice improvement, but am cautious not to overtax/heat my laptop. Can only hope they fix this soon rather than later. I was on cusp of installing NORTON 360 to my less than 1 year old new WIN11 desktop - but now, I am going to put that off. Will continue to monitor this thread and post as warranted.

Best,
Ted

I did run that Norton support tool as well, lets hope the Norton dev’s can find a fix. I didnt get any reaction from them so far though. My laptop is certainly running way louder/hotter then it used to before the gpu was used all the time.

A sort-of fix for now is to just reboot it in eco-mode, and only switch to standard/balanced when you need performance. As long as the dgpu isnt started NortonUI.exe wont run on it. The only downside is that you have to restart all the time when you want the laptop to run cool/have decent battery life.

@ARP @TJWIN7User @PIRABAKARAPANDIYAN_P Maybe, at a personal level I am a bit too old school with all the add-on’s that are out there which do nothing BUT cause issues. I DON’T use nor recommend them in the first place, why? Security software SHOULD be doing those tasks in a total package. Coding a singular product to do what Norton has always done in the past is now a cracked rear view issue. Remove some of the add-on’s and see which one stops the issue. Just a simple approach I have always suggested.

SA

@SoulAsylum Do you mean Norton add-ons? I just left everything at default, and this was on a new laptop with just the bare essentials installed (MS office etc). Offcourse it has the (in my case) standard ASUS bloatware that came pre-installed but i removed most of them.

Just to add, i have the normal Norton 360, i dont use utilities, driver updater, anti-tracking and whatever else Norton is offering these days with all the pop-ups.

@ARP Thanks for the feedback. I was indeed referring to other software companies offer that perform tune-ups, updating this and that. Many cause issues not present before their usage.

SA

No problem, thank you for trying to help me (and some other users) out. Lets hope that either Norton or NVIDIA releases an update to fix this. Right now this situation makes it a pain to use the laptop unplugged.

I concur 100% with user ‘ARP’. I have a standard NORTON 360 install, am not using/running/clicking on anything extra they offer - not using VPN either. The only extension I have is NORTON SAFE SEARCH. I’ve turned off settings not desired based on recommendations from this forum since the new version came into being (after version 22). My laptop came from FALCON-NORTHWEST and doesn’t come installed with any extra 3rd-party software other than Windows 11 - it is clean an installation as they come. Of course I’ve installed other software since then (no tune-up types) that I’m familiar with, but it has been pretty rare to have newer software installed now…everything I have has been running for some time now with no issues. I too hope this gets straightened out.

Wow!! They make some expensive and very hossing computers at Falcon. I had the opportunity to have a look at their site earlier this morning.

If I may suggest again, each one of you to run the Norton Support Tool I linked to in an earlier post. Norton developers will have a better idea about what their coding is doing, where the issues may lie with those logs in hand. When you submit the logs please add your user name here on the forums AND link to this thread to have a reference for them to reflect on.

@SoulAsylum Already did that, no reaction from Norton so far (not even a mail that they received the logs), but as soon as i hear from them i’ll update you all here.

@SoulAsylum and @ARP

I too did collect & send logs to NORTON support. These are the instructions they asked me to carry out using the actual NORTON 360 UI itself (as opposed to using the ‘Norton Support Tool’) :

"Steps to collect logs:

-Open Norton Main UI
-Click on Settings
-Go to Troubleshooting tab
-Toggle ON settings - Enable Debug Logs
-Reproduce the actual issue
-Click on Send Logs and proceed to collect and send logs along with the issue screenshot
-Share the File ID generated at the end"

I collected logs for a couple hours on laptop before sending. I also pointed them to this specific community thread. I haven’t received a reply as of yet from NORTON either.

Does the separate support tool perform the same function as the specific individual steps I were given?

Ted

@TJWIN7User IF, a Norton representative instructed you to perform certain steps to assist, I’m not exactly sure that it would be the same as using the Support Tool I mentioned. Using the support tool will give Norton a documented reference ID in the event Norton has NOT contacted you either here or privately. My goal was/is to preserve that documentation for your benefit.

Norton doesn’t generally reply back when the Support Tool is used except in cases where they request it and are expecting it. Thus the need for your user name on the forums and link to the thread where the issues are being discussed.
